Sweat Elite has done it. A Galen Rupp interview where he isn’t defensive. Makes me like Galan a lot more when he seems like a normal guy.

Takeaways: -Short easy running after a marathon can aid in recovery. -Hard long runs make a marathoner. -Training at or worse than race conditions is beneficial for the body come race day. -Hydro-treadmill work and other forms of cross training are good supplemental training -Aerobic fitness is aerobic fitness, no matter how it's gained. -Work on maintaining speed and power when getting older, not just endurance & long intervals -Get every benefit out of each workout and analyze + reflect on each one. -Visualize each scenario that could play out weeks before the race. -Social media has its positives but can be a major distraction when trying to stay focused on training. -1000s are hard. I'm excited to see how well Galen does! It's good to know he's in good shape. Wishing him the best of luck and go 🇺🇲!

Never say best of luck, there is no luck when racing a marathon . Either you put the mileage in or you don’t. Either you did your speed play or you did not. It’s better to say Best wishes. It’s like adoption of a child, there is no real mom or real dad, it biological mom or dad. These are more politically correct in my opinion.

Just like Galen says, slow short running each day the week after a marathon really is helpful. It sounds and feels terrible but my soreness and fatigue are gone so much quicker when I run each day for a few days after the race.

What a treat! A west coast guy who sounds so east coast, no? My favorite part is the end (26:15) when asked about workouts he dreads, and then we hear this belly laugh, like it's the most wonderful topic imaginable. He loves the pain that makes me cry.

Hey I'm just like Galen Rupp! I take it easy after a marathon! 🤣🤣🤣👍 Something else that helps me recover the week after a marathon is CYCLING. If I were a swimmer, I'd even get to the pool a couple times during recovery. Last marathon, I did this each day: - Marathon - Off (a bit of stretching and rolling) - Easy bike ride, 10 miles (~35 minutes) - Easy bike ride, 15 miles (~50 minutes) - Easy run, 3 miles - Off (stretching and rolling) - Bike ride, moderate pace, high cadence (~90+ RPM) 25 miles - Easy run, 6 miles - Second week was more like a base week. - Third week, I started to get back towards a normal training block for the next race (10k or marathon) Of course, this is what I did, a 46 year old guy who barely breaks 3 hours in a marathon. 🤔😁 Galen probably ran each day, if I understand what he said. He said something about running slow like with "your Grandma". It's hard for me to run, even slowly, the week after a marathon. But it's due to age and recovery speed. 🤗 This interview has changed my opinion of him. It is nice to hear so much from him, when he is usually quiet with the media. Regardless of what I think, he's earned his place in running history! 👌👍✌️

"An Artist does their best work when they don't know what they are doing"...."Art is largely instinctive.... Instinct based on training and practices." Love what he had to say on visualization and tying it back to racing off reaction. That's what I thought of when he was elaborating on it.

So the athletic equivalent of Howard Hughes deigns to open the curtains and let room service in. Now that you have broken the ice with the Hermit of Oregon think there is any chance that the next date could you on a bike and the crunch crunch sound track of a traditional sweat elite joint?

Curious if Alberto Salazaar’s name will come up in this, or if that was a precondition for the interview…
@ilikeducksable
@ilikeducksable 2 года назад
Update: he didnt come up, they skirted around him near the beginning talking about his past training. Can’t really blame the interviewer, the questions were likely all prescreened by Nike, and if he did ask about it he’d never get a big interview again. Just the sad state of access journalism. We can’t expect everyone to ask the tough questions, or else they wouldn’t be tough.
