Do you think I should have tried anything else to fix this?
@itslfas_

you can try board swap, take the importan stuff and put it on other board
@ScottFix
@ScottFix Год назад
I think I will give that a try. Thanks for the feedback.

There's a retro shop selling the boards, come in colors red, green, blue

I never saw you test the F1 fuse. That's most likely why you weren't getting power from terminal to the switch. It sits in between and is a VERY common point of failure when there is corrosion. I'm just referring to your no power after replacing the terminal and switch. Never saw you test continuity or voltage. Cheers.

Fun watching others troubleshoot their way through trying to salvage a GBA, as that's been my main hobby time activity this year. Coincidentally just shelved a water-damaged unit, as I didn't feel like hunting down a hidden short at the moment. Always a learning experience though!

I was watching this really closely, and I was REALLY hoping that you got it working in the end. I really enjoyed watching the video. I love that you didn't give up on it in the start until the end of the video. 👍

I am glad you enjoyed the video. It was such a shame that I never managed to fix it, but you can't win them all.

I gave up on one with less overall corrosion and I didn’t get a third of the way as far as you did. I’m both encouraged to take another look at it and glad I stopped when I did.

It was a very long and frustrating time but I did learn a lot from doing it, so I will still take that as a win 😀

You’ve done a decent job here. If you was wondering why the annoying cart slot wouldn’t come off it’s becuase it’s got 2 plastic welds either side of it. To replace it or take it off requires you to melt the black welds either side of it in the board. Hope this helps. I’ve got a gba same model on the way for me to save, hopefully can become a working one that I can mod and be my main gameboy ❤😊

Thanks for the tip. I will remember that if I even get the courage to try it again 😂 Hope you have better luck fixing yours.

I was hyped when the continuity beeped! Not too shabby for your first trace fix😅

great fight against that GBA !! XD i d say dont hesitate put loads more flux , there s never "too much flux" you ll have super cute soldering! also i agree on another comment , maybe check that ribbon cable. anyway, had fun watching both parts as a novice myself !

Thanks for the feedback. I will test it again one day when I get another GBA screen. I would laugh if it turned out to be the ribbon cable. Glad you enjoyed the videos 😁

I would have gotten a new screen, that ribbon cable looked totally destroyed by the corrsion. Also I would recommend a desoldering tool with a silicon tip to help with desoldering also. Love the content, I'm new to the channel can't wait to see more content :)

Thanks for the feedback Jason. I will test it with a different screen the next time I work on another GBA. I plan on getting a desoldering gun in the future. Glad you enjoyed the video and welcome to the journey 👍

A good tip for removing the cart slot - lay a piece of copper wire between the pins and solder them all to the wire, use plenty of flux and plenty of leaded solder. I personally use 1.5mm cable from screwfix...Once all the pins all connected, and with a big tip on your iron, crank the heat and start heating up the wire. The heat will transfer from the wire to all of the pins (you can also use hot air at the same time to speed things up), and once the solder melts you can wiggle the connector free. An elevated PCB holder helps as you can access both sides of the board, unlike if you were to lay the board flat on the table.

Thanks for the great tip. I will give that a try next time. I still get PTSD when I think about my last attempt 😅

I feel your pain, had my own battle with a GBA today. Its suffered water damage but turn on. Get a flicker when wiggling the switch.

It is very frustrating when dealing with corrosion as the fault can be anywhere, trying to find it is like a looking for a needle in a haystack 😖

On the outer shell there is another contact point for the battery, can that metal contact point come out to clean off corrosion more easily? I haven't seen it being touched in the 2 video's. Is it not likely to cause problems as long as the point of contact with the battery is clean? I'm trying to fix mine right now.
@ScottFix

I will take a look at that. Thanks. Hope you got yours fixed.
