That was a Valerian steel sword John used "Long Claw" to kill the White Walker. You just met the leader of the WW'S. THE NIGHT KING.

Jon's sword is made of Valyrian steel, which can apparently kill the proper White Walkers. I squealed when I first saw this scene, because it was the first time the White Walker's weakness to Valyrian steel was confirmed.

This episode was directed by Miguel Sapochnik, he's a very talented director and behind episodes 5-7, 5-8, 6-9, 6-10, 8-3,8-5. He will also be one of the showrunners for the House of the Dragon prequel series!

That sword was given to John by Lord commander Mormont in 1st season. They can't make more swords because they don't know how to make Valerian steel. Most of these swords have been in families for hundreds and hundreds of years and passed down from father to son.
@S.Parrow
@S.Parrow 2 года назад
Valerian steel is forged in dragon fire, so once the dragons disappeared no more Valerian steel could be created. Except for highly skilled smiths who can rework it into new blades, which is what Tywin had done with Ned's sword when he had it turned into the swords he gave Jaime and Joffrey

@@S.Parrow Not really true, the knowlegde behind creating Valerian steel was lost in the doom of Valerya many hundreds of years before the dragons would die out. It is speculated that the prosess involves enchantment aswell as dragonfire but both methods need to be present to create one.
@moviebad109
@moviebad109 Год назад
@@S.Parrow idk if that’s fully true. They mention in the books how a few smiths can rework Valyrian steel. I think dragon fire and sorcery are hinted at as being part of the initial smelting process. GRRM doesn’t go into a ton of detail just that it’s impossible to forge new ones from scratch for a variety of reasons.

This is my favorite episode! The build up to the White Walkers and we finally get see them! 18:38 I have seen many many reactions and y'all are the first to recognize that Jon gets the wind knocked out of him! Reactors usually get annoyed that he isn't moving fast and falling over and I always think, "you've clearly never had the wind knocked out of you cause it is ROUGH."

I love the moment when the Night King slowly raises his arms while staring down Jon Snow. I know this is how he raises the dead, but it kinda looks like he's saying to Jon "that's right, whatcha gonna do about it, bitch?"

"Oh my sweet summer child what do you know about fear? Fear is for the winter when the snows fall a hundred feet deep and the ice wind comes howling out of the north. Fear is for the long night, when the sun hides its face for years at a time, and little children are born and live and die all in darkness...." 🥶 What the second half of five does best is portraying that feeling of airtight hopelesness. It's demoralizing but addictive at the same time. Hardhome is nuts.

I love how y’all pay attention to the nuance of the direction. Notice how the same wide angle shot they show of John sailing into the harbor at the beginning of that scene is the same angle they show of him sailing out of the harbor. Except in the last shot everyone on the harbor is dead. Brilliant direction.

When Jon holds Longclaw in the air and yells "Night's Watch With Me!" as the handful of Brothers in Black run to the other direction of the retreating gray masses; that freeze frame moment leading up to the Valyrian Steel revelation; and the ending with the Night King slowly walking through that creeking plank. Those are the three shots I live for. The cinematography is impeccable. It's emotive and ominous. This one's up there with the top episodes.

Hardhome is one of my favorite episodes of the series. For the ambience alone if nothing else, and the slow anxiety it induces. That dark and desolate snowy panorama throughout the evacuation always gets me jittery. The environment feels very "Othery", pun intended. This seems like a continuation of the darkness of the recent episodes. As I said last time, Winterfell and beyond the wall just feels like a dystopian fairy tale inverted on its head right now, mesmerizing in its eerie silence.

This episode was critically acclaimed and I absolutely love it because I love the gloom & doom undertone of the battle, Sapochnick's direction is very different from the previous battles. Episodes like Hardhome is why this season won an unprecedented number of Emmys and was resching peak viewership, it's why I love 5 despite the next two episodes that many seem to have a huge problem with. "Wicked Games" is the perfect theme for this season. Nothing with something as brilliant as hardhome in it should be considered a net negative in any logical way!

The Nights King in the books was the 13th Lord Commander of the Nights Watch. In the book, " A Storm of Swords ", Old Nan told the story of the Nights King and that he was an Ancient Stark. He was possibly the younger brother of Brandon the Breaker Stark, King of the North.

Only the blue demonic looking creatures are White Walkers. Their touch brings dead humans back to life. Which is what most of those things attacking were, undead humans called "wights". Depending on how long the human has been dead when he was brought back, their bodies are at different stages of decomposition. Those who've died recently are still flesh, those who've been dead for a long time are skeletons. Jon's sword is made of Valyrian Steel, one of the last few left in the seven kingdoms, as Jeor Mormont said way back in S1 when he gave it to Jon. One of the other Valyrian swords was Ned's sword Ice, which Tywin broke into two and gave to Joffrey and Jaime and which Jaime gave to Brienne. So Brienne has one now.

My favorite episode of the show. This was when Jon knew he was well and truly screwed. So in the books, the White Walkers are the generals - the guys on horseback. The random dead are Wights. Their leader is known as the Night King. They simplified it for the show, lumping all but the Night King into the "White Walker" name. The sword was given to Jon by the former leader of the Night's Watch. It's valyrian steel.

The thing I'll say about the show ending is that watching it in real time was hard due to spoiled season leaks and then the build up. But I will say after seeing the whole season and then rewatching the whole series through rewatches it is more enjoyable and I def think they way it was ended was correct. I think you guys watching it faster than having to wait years for it will def be helpfull.

Same. After re-watching the whole series, I feel better about what happened in the final two seasons. But, I also realized my biggest issue wasn't what the show runners did. It was HOW they did it. The pacing of those seasons was terrible.

Fyi: the Army of the Dead consists of White Walkers and wights (pronounced like the color white). The wights are the majority of the Army, the corpses with the pale blue eyes. The White Walkers are the ones that Jon killed. Oh yeah, Valyrian steel is key in the Great War. This was the episode that made many of us realize that the Night King, that dude’s name, is the real enemy.

This episode is one of my favorites because it so elegantly lays out how hopeless the battle against the white walkers is. Jon's army of the living need to be convinced to follow against their prejudices and their resentments. Even with a good pitch to fight for the future he could still only convince a small portion to join him. All the Night King needs to do is raise his hands. Chilling ending.

Glad you're still watching game of thrones. It's still taking me a while to enjoy the story I might have to start from the beginning to understand it's storyline. You're videos really make my day you and the rest of the gang. I recommend Final Space an underrated masterpiece that I think would be a great addition to your creative channel. You all enjoyed Rick and Morty but I think you'll enjoy Final Space even more then RnM it has so much to give and very few people that even know of the existence of the title and it's characters than the story. You saw the Night King for the first time in S4E4. And you saw wights (aka "army of the dead") that look like the skeleton zombies in S4E10 with Bran at the tree (in S1 & S2 they looked more fleshy). Maybe you should re-watch season 4? I feel like maybe waiting super long between episodes makes people forget more easily.

The knight king is the only original white walker and he is literally thousands of years old but all of the men you see with him including the one John killed were all made from his power and you’ll see how that happens later if I remember correctly. So in a way they’re almost all his sons And Jon killed one so you can imagine he’s not too happy about that.

I'm not the biggest fan of GoT, especially the later seasons, including season 5. I think there are a lot of missteps, a lot of producer self indulgence, and they start to diverge more and more from the books. All that being said, you have to give the devil his due; "Hardhome" is just about a perfect episode. In a single hour the cover 4 major plot points: Tyrion/Jorah/Denerys, Arya and the Faceless Men, Cersei vs the cast of Ted Lasso, and Jon at Hardhome plus two lesser scene in the Bolton war council and Sansa/Theon. Each of the first three are handled quickly, but don't feel rushed. Theirs plenty of time for dialogue and for innuendo and teasing foreshadows, then quickly on to the next. Hardhome itself introduces new characters, efficiently gets the audience at least basically to feel for them, covers the necessary diplomatic ground between the Nights Watch and the Wildlings, THEN launches into the action set-piece of the Battle of Hardhome which starts out as a massive action sequence before devolving into essentially a horror sequence, and ending with the real introduction of the Night King when he raises all his wights. All of that ground covered in 1 hour 1 minute without feeling rushed and without any major drops or flaws. Unless I misremember, this is the highest rated episode. For some Trivia, they exhausted the shows budget with this episode and had to go to HBO and ask for more money.

Keep an open mind & you won't be disappointed. Some of the best episodes ( & the best season in my book) of the whole series is coming in the next few seasons. Keep reading sour grape comments from those who represent a small minority of GOT viewers & they will attempt to manipulate your view, close them out. The Books (Next chapter not completed in 10+ years) & the show are 2 different things. The show is considered the 2nd best TV show ever on IMDB. I have watched you guys for a long time now, big GOT fan. I'm here for the dimples now.

This right here is better than the series finale of most shows. These people had to have their faces so far up GRRM's ass you can taste what he had for breakfast. To purists it's almost as if GRRM's greatness cannot be established unless you go out of your way to shit on everything else. I've seen toxic fandoms, but the pettiness and sycophancy of the r/freefolks type Asoiaf purists hellbent on discrediting even all the good stuff is next level psychotic.

the poor and absolutely lost quality of season 5 has seemed to lose you guys completely. starting here and thru the end of 6 there are several of the greatest moments and episodes of the show's entire run. as far as the white walkers, they are the humanoid ice monster guys. the zombies are 'wights', they're just dead bodies resurrected and controlled by the white walkers. Jon's sword is an extremely rare and magically forged kind of metal called Valyrian steel (Valyria was a magical place where the dragons and Targaryens came from) - other swords made of this were Ned's big execution sword (which Ned used in the pilot to execute the deserter, and which was used against Ned to execute him - which Tywin in season 4's opener melted down into two smaller swords, one given to Joffrey, the other to Jaime who gave it to Brienne) and the dagger used in season 1 to try to assassinate Bran while he slept. Wights/zombies can be killed by fire. The white walkers can be killed by dragonglass like Sam used (the black rock, obsidian), or Valyrian steel, both of which are magically made.
