The Dawn Age, also known as the Dawn of Days or the dawn centuries, was an undetermined period when the First Men, arriving from Essos, colonized Westeros. The mysterious and diminutive children of the forest, possessing supernatural powers, were the earliest known inhabitants of Westeros. For an unknown duration, they lived in isolation across the continent, worshipping nameless gods of forest, stream, and stone, and relying on the land.
The origin and longevity of the children's solitary existence in Westeros remain unclear, with the oldest records only documenting the arrival of the First Men from Essos approximately 12,000 years ago. Runic records of the First Men and accounts from maesters claiming to have lived among the children of the forest suggest human settlements at the mouth of the Honeywine, where Oldtown stands, date back to the Dawn Age. Maester Jellicoe proposed that Whispering Sound originated as a trading post, facilitating commerce between ships from Valyria, Old Ghis, the Summer Isles.
