In Game of Thrones, the story of Melisandre (Carice van Houten) answers a key question of the series: what's the point of prophecy? Furthermore, is it also a subtle comment on our own appetite for predictions and theories for the show? If you like this video, subscribe to our channel or support us on Patreon: / thetake

Melisandre doesn't get all the credit she deserves for all her acomplishments: * Convinced Stanis to help Jon to defeat the wildings * Brought Jon back to life * Brought Daenarys and Jon together * Gave Aria the pep talk she needed to defeat the Night King * Lit swords and trenches so we could see what was happening on the battle of winterfell
@mrmeyerhofer
@mrmeyerhofer 5 лет назад
I agree on the Stannis part but there ended up being no purpose in bringing Jon back to life since he did basically nothing in the battle. Yes, he united people against the Night King, but the Night King couldn't have gotten past the Wall without a dragon in the first place, which he wouldn't have gotten without Jon/Dany, so it's a wash. Lighting the swords on fire looked great but served no purpose (much like sacrificing the Dothraki cavalry in the first place). I don't really buy that Arya benefited that much from Melisandre retconning what she said before; that doesn't trump the fact that Arya had the least personal investment in killing the Night King, so having her fly in like Li Mu Bai was pretty Mary Sue. Just my opinion as a frustrated fan who loves the show and REALLY loves the books.

@@mrmeyerhofer If Jon weren't brought back then the north wouldn't have been prepared for the night king, sansa would have died or worse at the hand of Ramsey. Arya would have gone to the south to kill Cersei and Daenarys would have gone to take the iron throne all which would have led the night king to become unstoppable at the point it reached kings landing. I agreed the show runners dropped the ball this season but that doesn't take away Mel's acomplishments following the messy logic of the show
@kevinw712

speaking of the swords, I didn't fully realize in that moment that the Dothraki hadn't really been given any dragon glass. And since obviously none of their blades had any Valerian steel, prior to her doing that they were almost pointless to bother having at all, considering it's only the VS or dragonglass that would kill wights. I didn't mind Melisandre making a call back to Arya about the list of eye colors (even then the blue didn't telegraph to me she'd kill the Night King, I figured it referred to all the WW and wights in general) but I could've done without her literally spelling out what Beric had just done. It seemed pretty clear from just the action that the "answer" about Beric was for him to save Arya's life, Melisandre practically breaks the 4th wall in then verbalizing all that.

As much as I definitely can't say that I found Arya's whole story thread in relation to the Faceless Men faultless, but I did find I very much related to like her emotional journey. Because especially the way Jaqen and the FM were introduced in season 2, I'd more gotten the impression they were sort of this noble band of super assassins helping to uphold genuine justice throughout the realm. We get there in Bravvos into the story in season 5, and yeah the super assassins label still fits, and it turns out they'll simply kill literally anyone as long as your check clears. That was kind of disappointing.

Melisandre is like the Fortune Teller from The Last Airbender. She says the volcano won't destroy the village. The team doesn't believe her. They save the town moments after the volcano erupts. At the very end, a side character goes, "See...she said the village wouldn't burn down and it didn't." So it's like, yeah she was correct, but the recipients of the fortune kind of made it become true, almost out of spite, because they were so sure that the fortune would NOT come true.

I think both stories have a similar message but there is a slight difference. In ATLA it’s pretty obvious that the fortune teller doesn’t have any power, she uses the same tricks that a lot of fortune tellers in the real world use. Melisandre clearly does have power and can see parts of the future, prophecy is also clearly a thing in GOT. Melisandre’s main problem is her arrogance, she misinterprets her visions to seem more powerful. By the end of the show she seems to understand her place a lot more and uses prophecy to help people make decisions, instead of trying to force them to come true herself.

@a5cent
@a5cent 5 лет назад
Melissandra's final premonition, Ariya being the one who will deliver the final blow to the NK (while having no knowledge of Ariya's training in Bravos), is a lot more than just a lucky guess. There is something to her visions. Yet, despite Melissanda finally correctly divining the future, all of the scenes about the "prince that was promised" prophecy turned out to be meaningless filler. None of it served any narrative purpose. All of those scenes and all the dialogue could have been cut and the show would not be missing anything. In fact, it would be better, because it wouldn't feel like the show had wasted our time with meaningless blathering. The point: Melissandra was not a broken clock. The show just had terrible writers.

It doesn't matter if prophecies are true or not. Prophecies are important because they drive the plot and character development. The Prophecy of Azor Ahai is important because you have characters who believe in it and use it as motivation for their actions. Melisandre believes in this prophecy and she does horrible things and manipulates events in ways in hopes of fulfilling this prophecy. Regardless if it's right or wrong, it has a huge effect on characters and plot. You can't have the character or plot without the prophecy. Same thing with Cersei's prophecy. She's doing all these things to try to avoid that prophecy from coming true. It motivates her and it's very important to her character arc. That "closing eyes" comment is inconsequential to Arya. It didn't want to make her go to Braavos and become a faceless person. It didn't make her want to kill people she hated. If Arya had never heard that comment, it would have made no difference to her motivation or development.

The show made it very strange to begin with by taking two different prophecies from two separate cultures and combining them into one (Azor/prince that was promised). The hardest part about prophecies is they are like the Bible. Everyone interprets it differently and everyone thinks that their interpretation is the right one. Take something like the Azor prophecy. Which, isn't even a prophecy, it's just a story about the hero of the first long night, I digress. So, let's say by the end of this Jon kills Dany. Someone telling this story from a thousand years ago, even if it's just a vision that they saw, this prophecy still fits in with it. It doesn't happen in the correct order and it doesn't happen to stop the long night, but how is someone getting a vision thousands of years ago going to know the exact timeline? Or, take the prince that was promised prophecy. An actual prophecy. People decided that it is for one person and one person only. However, if you look back at the series as a whole, almost every single main character has done something to bring the dawn. Including Stannis. Melisandre getting the prophecy wrong had to happen in order for the long night to be ended. This is where I take issue with prophecy.
@iloveyourunclebob
@iloveyourunclebob 5 лет назад
Let's also talk a second about lightbringer. I'm not saying at all that this is the case. The fun part about prophecies is that you can debate the outcome a lot of different ways. Lightbringer is a sword that gets shoved into a woman's chest and comes out flaming. Valyrian steel are swords who's lore revolves around human sacrifice and dragon fire. I actually really like debating prophecies because there are so many different outcomes. It can be literal, it can be completely metaphorical, it can be a mix, and it's always hard to pinpoint. Especially the way that George goes about his. He has said himself to never take the prophecies in his books at face value and to never trust a character's stories of history.

@iloveyourunclebob
@iloveyourunclebob 5 лет назад
@@johnathonhaney8291 that could be it. I like debating things like prophecy, but I try to put absolutely no weight on them. I think it ruins the experience for a lot of people when they expect the way they've interpreted it to be correct and it turns out to not be. Prophecies are like the cotton candy of the fantasy genre. It's a fun little sugary treat, but it's not a meal and you should never make it into a meal.
@johnathonhaney8291
@johnathonhaney8291 5 лет назад
@@iloveyourunclebob And far too many of the GOT fandom have made that meal you mentioned of it. Even now, they're trying to use them as a guide for the ending or deceiving themselves on how GRRM would be any more faithful to one or the other. Some people refuse to learn.

You summed up my feelings tbh. But prophesies are one thing and depth another. This season lacks depth and detail. With all the buildup around 'The Others' since the prologue, seeing all of them die by a sneaky knife wound was underwhelming. I liked that Arya killed NK, but not the way she did. Ramin Djawadi saved that episode tbh

Great video. Game of Thrones reminds me a lot of Roman literature and values- in Greek/Roman culture hubris was the ultimate sin, always punished by the gods. GoT characters’ fates greatly reflect this. I loved that you used the term humble. Only humility saves/redeems the hubristic characters. The Lord of Light only comes to Melisandre, or is able to fulfill his purpose through her when she fully humbles herself and submits. Just like Thoros.

Love the fact that you drew comparasons with the fandom 'prophecies', and their combing of the books and scenes on the show for 'clues' and 'foreshadowing' that GRRM has put through the text... One of the youtube sages, bridge4 (210k subs), has made a video following the Long Night episode, now claiming: 'the writing was all there; he was just too dense to figure it out' (his belief, based on book combing, and show analysing, was that the Night King would be cured, and yes, writing was all there for that too).

The whole prophecy thing didn’t make sense. None of the characters even knew about it (expect for Stannis) for it to effect their storyline or decisions. The writers were trying to sell the idea of a prophecy to the audience. Which just seemed weird when they ditched it.

@@tsu6341 This only sound like they flip a coin and wrote a script out of it. They even slightly change one prophecy so it could fit the death of the night King. I love how the show dealt with the prophecy in the beginning. How people believe them to the point they think they can not escape them. But in the 2-3 last seasons everything prophecy become either what was moving forward the story or completly forgotten. Bran's vision are supposed to explain why and how he get the thrones. While Cersei's prophecy end up being accurate at 98% but the 2% left were forgotten (The king would have 20 kids, while you have 3. Yours kids while dying. But what about "your little brother will kill you?" It would have been good if Arya killed her with the face of Tyrion or Jaime. The prophecy would be half truth.The prophecy in the last episode only serve heroism.

There are ppl out in the world who believes whole hardly in Nostradamus, the 2nd coming of Christ...ect. This is how our world turn. From the beginning of human. We always wanted to know how the story end. I used to always read the ending of the book before I start reading the whole book, but that didn't help me enjoy the story much either. The best historic story about prediction is the story of Oedipus. Some prediction is better to not know than know. Anyway, we all know what is in our future... Valar Morghulis.

It's also about self-fulfilling prophecy, the fact one knows a certain prophecy makes him/her alter his/her/ decisions to fullfil or to deter the prophecy and it is because of these certain steps that it turns out true, like in the story of Oedipus. Meaning that if the person had not heard the prophecy or did not act upon it, it wouldn't have come true.This is more about Cersey tho.
