I used to visit a small game store, that specialized on retro stuff, near my apartment almost daily. It was always a great experience to see what was available and talk about gaming in general with the only employee who worked there. Unfortunately with the pandemic I moved back to my parent's, so I haven't visited the store in months. Those small game stores are such a great place to go

GameStop... All the trade in credit in the world could never make me shop there again.

GameStop should make their employees act like NPCs when asking customers about memberships for April fool's

The local gamestop in my area was my childhood, the manager there was really chill, and my mom actually got to know him a bit, and my mother would always mention him fondly to the employees, sadly the manager who was really nice really quit gamestop to for a job he has more passion for, pet smart, he loves animals, but the new manager is also pretty nice and was an empolyee there for years.

As a Gamestop employee, this is my favorite Scott the Woz episode.

I still remember the moment when I was 11 or 12 years old and I went into Gamestop to buy a game. The employee told me that Pokemon Black 2 & White 2 were coming out soon and I had no idea. I remember being completely mind-blown by the fact that there was a Pokémon game with a real sequel

Went to this really cool 2-storey game store once. They had regular modern game stuff on the ground floor, like Minecraft plushies, Switch consoles, and 3 different versions of Exploding Kittens. But the fun part was the basement. They sell N64 games. They sell C64s and Ataris. They have Tetris and Pac-Man arcade machines (not for sale afaik). Their (3)DS game collection was bigger than my local game shop's was at its peak. I went to heaven and it's the basement of a random game shop in the Netherlands.

I've met some wonderful employees at gamestop. One time I went to a gamestop recently casually looking for pokemon plushes. One of the employees noticed that I was buying a totodile plush that was heavily discounted, and he was like "hey, do you want another one? We really want to get rid of it, so it'll literally cost you only 2 cents," and it was a chikorita, and I was trying to complete my Johto starters so I was like hell yeah dude, and he brought it out from the back of the store for me. There was another gamestop employee that literally got me into Persona and SMT. I went to a gamestop a while back to stock up on some nostalgic RPGs for me (FFIII on the DS, Rogue Galaxy, Radiata Stories, etc.). I asked the employee if they had any of the games I listed and he said no. As I was about to walk away though, the guy said "c'mere. I got some games I know you'll like," and he brought me over to the ps2 games where he had SMT Nocturne and Persona 4, two of my now all-time favorite games ever. I never saw that employee again after that...which was a shame cause that man was a goddamn salesman. I bet he got fired cause he didn't shove preorders down your throat, but who the fuck cares about that when he knows how to sell franchises to people that they may not know about. THAT'S a true game store salesperson.

I remember having a pretty good conversation about the DS Pokemon games with a GameStop employee one time. He wasn't trying to sell me anything, we just had a good chat. Wish I could have more experiences like that at GameStop.

Man, I'm on a rewatching binge of Scott the Woz videos and this is my 5th time watching this one and i still enjoy it just as much as the first time. I feel like this rewatching binge may trigger me going on a shopping spree for games that I will not play for no other reason than "I'll get around to it eventually"

I started working at Gamestop back in August of last year and just got back to rewatching this episode, but holy shit he hits the nail on the head. Gamestop has it where your store's performance and employee performance is reliant on preorders, pro memberships, and warranties on hardware or games. It's literally shoved down the employees' throats so they can puke it back down yours. I hate it with a passion. I firmly believe the stuff can be beneficial, but c'mon, it's not like everyone wants the prostate exam of retail.

I remember going to GameStop and whilst trading in games he made jokes about how GameStop pays jack for trade ins, he was a really nice dude, only said something about a membership once instead of 6 times per 30 seconds

Yeah I’ve had some great experiences at GameStop, like when I was just trying to buy Tropical Freeze and the guy who worked there went on a rant about how Nintendo only makes childrens games and that I should try playing a «real game» with «artistic merit» like Call of Duty I wish I was joking

There was a place called Software Etc. at the local mall when I was growing up and there was this Asian guy who worked there who would always tell me which games were bad and which games were good, sometimes at the cost of making a profit. I was looking to buy an RPG called The Summoner but thanks to that glorious man I walked out with Xenosaga and Suikoden IV, the latter of which became one of my favorite games of all time. I wonder what happened to that guy. I hope he’s doing well.

In my area, we have this retro/gaming/mobile/PC store type empire called "CEX" and oh man, they have a ton of stuff and will always be able to help fix the stuff your having problems with. But I do get where your saying with many of the pop and stop stores are shutting down but this empire is still going strong to this day. I would prefer that over normal gaming shops.

Former Games On A Shelf employee here (2007-2019 on and off) and boy was it soul crushing. I stuck around because it was generally easy work, flexible, was something I was interested in, and whenever I moved to a new area, I had the experience necessary to get right in. The store I worked at was actually the home base for the guy that’s actually the VP of stores now. Anyway, all the gripes and all the counter points to the gripes are all spot on. My store try to minimize the bullshit by encouraging donations of games that weren’t pulling that much in credit, we’d NEVER sticker box art, instead we’d tear the sticker off with the back still on, and close it in the plastic covering. That way, whenever you bought it, you just opened the game up, lifted the plastic, boom, no stickers. We also FIERCELY stuck to our guns with the 48 hour reserve window on new games. If you pre-ordered a game at our store, we had your copy for 48 hours regardless of corporate telling us to sell through our stock.

Video games stores being a place to just chill, that’s actually a dope idea. I’d maybe do something like that in the future

When I was a kid I loved my local GameStop so much. It was my favorite place in the world. And then half the employees got fired. And then a few months later it closed for good. Now when I go to other GameStop’s it just never feels the same.

Here in Germany, when I buy NEW games from a store (not specifically Gamestop, any store), it often happens that more expensive games are sold as "empty boxes", which means: the case packaging has been opened, the actual game has been taken out and left at some kind of information desk to avoid stealing the game. You can only pick up the actual game at the information desk by showing your purchase receipt once you have bought the game case in the store!...And you still have to pay the full price.

Scott I love you. This is easily my favorite out of all your videos. I used to work at Rhino Video Games, which was a great place for retro games. When all our stores were sold to GameStop it was this awful cultural shift. Being the assistant manager at GameStop is the worst job I have ever had, and my first job involved digging ditches.

This is one of my favorite Scott the woz videos! I remember when it came out and I was really not having a great Sunday, and then this video came out and made me so happy :) Classic video!

Here in the UK we used to have a store called GameStation, during the 7th gen of consoles they often sold gen 6 games in bundles 3 for £20, which made me, a kid who only had a ps2 in 2009 and was on a budget, able to walk out with 3 games almost every month. The store shut down, probably because when we're way too generous, but it will always be one of my happiest childhood memories

I was so pissed when they stopped selling Gamecube games at Gamestop

The worst part of glass cases on game shelves is having to get an employee for sure. Especially the walk over to the case where neither of you say anything until you arrive and say "yeah, that one"

Always had great experiences at my local GameStops regardless of where I lived. The employees there are actually interested in video games, are nice to talk to, and gave me honest opinions. It also allowed me to buy used games very cheap, often using the buy-2-get-1 offer, and get into the Xbox 360 late in the console’s lifecycle with great games at low prices. I also loved Game Informer. It’s because of that magazine that I read about Darksiders II, then bought Darksiders for $17 (preowned) in preparation for Darksiders II, and fell in love with the series. At this point in my life, however, I love the convenience of digital games so my relationship with GameStop is all but dead. Oh, and I also hated those ******* stickers on NEW games!

I’m sobbing as someone who just quit my job at GameStop. Your video is 100% authentic. I could not stop laughing. Anyone in upper management is psycho on selling numbers. I got a write up for “my team” that I was in charge of not having good enough numbers.

In the UK, we have GAME, CeX, Smyths and Asda (Walmart) sells games. Tesco has stopped selling physical media sadly, which Best Buy in America recently started to do. GAME has started to stop trade-ins, we can only resell games on Ebay or CeX.

The opening seven seconds have a whole different meaning now.

Thankfully, the times I went to my local GameStop, there were pretty chill people who didn't really bother me a lot about memberships and stuff. They closed down last year. OHHH

There's a small business store in a town nearby that opened 5 years ago. Granted, they sell movies and old school video games, but if you're an enthusiast of either, it's an awesome place. The inventory is pretty low, but you can always find something you love. Like I bought Mario Party 6 in a complete set for $80 there, they had Melee complete there at one point, same for FF7

ebay always got my back when it comes to used stuff, be it games, devices, or even console parts. the ability to see real pictures taken by the seller of what you're buying, as well as the ebay moneyback guarantee, is a really good safety net

We had a game store that sold burned copies of games and would mod your PS1 to play those modded games. They would also sell the disc you needed to allow the Dreamcast to play burned games. I came across a store that sold all types of videogame merch and it was my favorite store for a while until they shut it down. They had every console at the time, limited editions of games and vinyl statues. They even had a replica of Squalls gunblade.

I’m from Australia and when I was on a holiday to America, I had some money to spend on a switch game. We went to the counter and the lady said “are you a powerup rewards member?” And my Dad said “No, we’re from Australia.” There was a five second pause before she said “for when you come back?”

Disc replay is amazing

Personally most of my gamestop experiences have been great and the employees were chill. Never have I or my parents been shoved membership down our throats, they only ask during checkout. Don't know about the pre-order deal either since I never experience it, so Gamestop is the best place the shop for me since I feel at home there.

Here in the UK, we essentially have different stores for new games (GAME) and used games (CeX, it does DVDs too).

I wish there was a gaming cafe. A tiny section to get some games, sells gaming gift cards for steam, xbox, you get the idea. A section for demos. One for PC's to play with. It's nice being around people that share the same interests or rather interest.

I do know of a local place that does the whole range of games from systems as far back as the NES. I built an entire spontaneous 100+ collection of amiibo from there, they had a few arcade machines in the back, they also sold movies equally as old, and systems cheaper than new but equal to new in quality because they went out of their way to clean both systems and games they bought from customers. Absolute gem, don't regret supporting them with my stimulus money at all.

The only thing I like about game stop having a bunch of merchandise is that with the merchandise, came Pokémon cards, and I collects so finding Pokémon cards next to games is always fun

One time my mom pre-ordered Modern Warfare 3, which had a program where you could recieve pre-order bonuses depending on when you bought it. An earlier order resulted in higher value bonuses. We went to get it on release day and they didn't have ANY of those promised items there. My mom was not happy. She tried to argue with the poor guy behind the counter before she gave up and we walked away with just the game itself and no pre-order bonuses, probably $80 or more down the drain for her troubles.

Walks into GameStop, fog everywhere, one overhead light in the center slowly flickers on and off. Continue walking its quiet too quiet, hear rustling behind me. I feel like someone is... trying to sell me something.

The magical feeling of entering a gamestore and seeing all the colorful and interesting games there are. Of not even always intending to get something, just browsing the games there. That was me as a kid. Thanks for reminding me of this, Scott.

I have so many issues with Gamestop as a company, but I was thinking about my most recent trip to their store and one of the things that stood out to me was how few games they actually had.
