+Lizrad Sceptile Funny thing, that. The GBC CPU was based off the Zilog Z80. Which the Sega Genesis had inside it, along with the 68000 which as you know was an absolute beast of a CPU. The Z80 was used inside the Master System, and its inclusion in the Sega Genesis both acted as backwards compatibility with the Master System and as a co-processor to drive the sound hardware in Genesis games.

+Claude Frollo The thing is, our brain can't compare the time between the steps of the tetris blocks very well, because they're moving relatively slow and we can only see one speed at a time, so on lvl 1, you wouldn't really notice a difference between 1x and 2x speed, because in our perception 2x speed is still slow. It changes on higher powers of 2, for example the difference between 2x and 4x is much easier to see, even though it's just doubled again

+Blowtorch the Robot As for the topic at hand, the Game Boy's processor was massively underclocked for the time in which it was produced. This was to maximize battery life. Fun fact, Intel originally saw the Pentium 4 scaling to 10GHz in its lifetime. The ALU (basic arithmetic unit, from what I understand) was already double pumped, so that would be running at 20GHz. Unfortunately, heat restrictions put a practical ceiling of~ 4GHz on the chip. Extreme overclockers got it to run stable at 7.7GHz on liquid nitrogen cooling. Anyway, Intel's strategy with the P4 was to push clock speeds higher than AMD would touch and sell on a big, impressive sounding number for a chip that really didn't do half of what the clock speed said it would. In reality though, the Pentium 4 made a lot of sacrifices to achieve the blistering clock rates it had. It's pipeline was almost twice as long as the Pentium 3 before it, indeed the final revision Prescott core had more than twice as many at 30. This made ludicrous clock rates possible, but made branch misprediction penalties more severe than ever. For programs with many branches, guessing wrong on what it had to do and having to flush the pipeline and start fresh (a branch misprediction) was very punishing. To help compensate for this, the branch prediction unit was probably the smartest thing in the chip, but it could only help so much. In essence, it's clock ticks incredibly fast, but doesn't do very much work per clock tick. This is why a 1.8GHz Core 2 Duo can handily run rings around a 3.2GHz Pentium D, which was two Pentium 4 dies on one chip. It's much more efficient of a design. One thing the Pentium 4 did have, though, was SSE2 performance. Holy bejeezus, the SSE2 unit in this thing was seriously quick, especially for its day. However, it's only relevant today because most new software requires it for compatibility reasons, not because anything ever actually makes real use of it. For pure SSE2 code, however, I'd wager that a P4 could probably stand up to a Core 2 chip and possibly even early Core i silicon. This put an end to the megahertz wars, the period where people generally associated clock speeds with general performance. This is not a good marker of performance except in cases where all other attributes are equal, say, when comparing a fifth gen i5 with a higher clocked fifth gen i5. The higher clocked i5 is, all other attributes equal, generally faster, though maybe not in such a dramatic way as to be immediately noticeable to humans. In a cruel twist of irony, the Pentium 4 happens to benefit from some improved engineering in comparison to its (for most things much faster) competition from AMD of the time. Features like SSE2 support and Hyperthreading make a Pentium 4 more usable on the web than the Athlon XP, especially since the Athlon XP isn't supported by most browsers anymore.

It's not just the CPU - the entire system is overclocked, including the video controller and the sound engine (hence the change in pitch). Everything is still running synchronously with everything else, and the LCD refresh rate increases accordingly, so as long as the components tolerate it there is no difference from the software's perspective, as the timing (in CPU cycles) of hblank and vblank is identical. At very high clock rates (70MHz or so, which is actually still OK with the CPU while running the BIOS, as it seems that the bottleneck during normal operation is the cartridge interface) the screen gets noticeably dimmer, since the LCD is being driven at a refresh rate that is wildly beyond spec.

It uses clock speed as a clock since it didn't have one. We now use actual clocks to time game events; you can also use framerate but that's only for things you want to unfold over a certain amount of frames.

+Jendrej low power devices usually are able to be overclocked a lot without overheating. They usually crash way before that point. PC overheat because you overclock the cpu hence it produces more heat, but you cant overclock the heatsink so it reaches a point were it cant keep up and it overheats. Low power devices generate really little heat that's why they dont use a heatsink, Doubling or tripling that still isnt much, i bet it will get warm at 4x though. Warm to us is about 40ºC so still way below 100ºC which is were silicon chips start to fail

Computers and other devices use an Operating system, which runs on the processor and manages CPU time and all the other stuff. This is why Windows runs the same (I/O wise this means) on a 3GHZ Singlecore and a 4GHZ Octacore. Systems like the GB don't have such a OS, They have a fixed speed, given by a quartz crystal. Sso if you mess with the crystal clock speed you mess with the clock of the whole CPU, and thus with all the things tied to it, like RAM, DSP etc.

All of the system functions, and therefore, the "time" of the system, is based on the clock speed, since this is something that can be very well counted on. When you change the speed, actions are then processed at exactly the same speed as you increased the clock speed. On modern computers, most games run according to time, so an action takes as many say, seconds, as it is programmed for.

ever heard of the "turbo button"? hell, those were the times. To keep it short and simple: Back then the ingame events were based and coded on the CPU cycles. for example a tetris block that would fall after x amount of cycles. Nowadays all hardware has an internal clock aswell, which pretty much does all that kind of work for your cpu.

The games probably run on the spartan 3 FPGA board. FPGAs are ICs that can "emulate" real hardware. The old architecture of a Z80 in a gameboy can't run at a high clock speed, but a modern FPGAs can run at very high clock speed. The screen and the buttons are probably linked to the board with a serial connection.
