@derrickfinzer_retroI don’t think they were worth as much then as they are now. Point in case he still could have sold it even if it wasn’t worth a ton
Ahh, the Saturn. Such a great, underrated console. I completely dismissed it back in the day, and only got one just about 4 years ago. Picked up an Action Replay Plus to enjoy some import goodness. Awesome system :)
digipimp75 excuse my language, but I FUCKING LOVE this system!!!!!! I just bought one, a mk1, not had one since literally 1998ish, I got it with 5 games too, am sooo pumped to get this, probably my favourite system ever. Big love to SEGA
Nice save! I love saving and restoring these old consoles. Nintendos were also built like tanks! I'm about to take my Saturn apart to do all this now. Thanks for the video!
Great video and killer find!! Growing up a Nintendo maximalist kid, Saturn eventually became my fav console. Saving this vid incase mine needs some love. Thanks for the vid!!
Dumpster Saturns. Wish I could be that lucky. Then again my local gaming store has them for $40 in working condition and the only one I found out in the wild went for the same price in unknown condition.
Thanks for the tutorial. Any console made by Sega or Nintendo were made like tanks and were designed to last. That took very little maintenance to get it back up and running again. It's a shame someone would just dump a operational Saturn like that. I still remember renting a Sega Saturn for $15 dollars just to play my favorite game Guardian Heroes, among other great games. I finally got a chance to purchase a Saturn from a GameXChange in the early 2000s and it was the Best $30 dollars I've ever spent!
This video really helped me swap the bprong black shell off my Saturn for a sweet grey and blue Japanese shell. I had all my consoles in a glass stereo case and I could never see my Sega stuff since they were all pitch black. Now Saturn stands out!
You did a great job cleaning that Saturn out. I thought it was professional with the instructions you have given. Very good tutorial and well informed. The Sega Saturn is an amazing console.
+CAX 117 Not much, aesthetically they're slightly different. The model one has the load light, which was stripped out to make production a tad cheaper.
Thanks Adam, The Sega Saturn is one of my favorite consoles (my first too) so getting info on it at this time really makes me happy. Thanks adam I'm so glad I subscribed a long time ago.
great video, I love all these videos, I have a soft spot for them because they were the first series I found on your channel, and you are one of my favorite RU-vidrs, thank you for the great content.
VERY helpful the cartridge slot cleaning bit! My ST-Key works again. I shall also bare in mind the half a mm thing you mentioned about the laser. Never had a problem with my 1994 Jap Saturn, they ARE built like tanks. Ciao Adam ;-)
The cart slot on my model 1 Saturn is one of those which only seems to like the ST-Key I have in it. Nothing else reads. At least I can play imports - in 50HZ though. I've tried cleaning, but it looks as though the pins have bent. Glad to see another console saved from the scrap heap, Adam
The cd drive cable is very easy to deal with. It just plugs straight in, so don't be afraid to remove it to get the cd drive/shielding/motherboard separated. The connector on the motherboard has tabs that need to be lifted to remove the cable although I usually only unplug the cd drive side of the cable, unless the cable is taped to the shielding. You can pinch the sides of the black plastic cover that's over the laser mech to remove it. I usually find hair or dried up grease around that area. With the cover off you can also remove the laser mech if it needs to be replaced. You can also grab the entire disc hub and pull it straight up it it's sunken. I don't recommend prying it up with a screwdriver as the plastic parts may crack or the shaft may bend. For the reset button, I find it easier to remove it before putting the top cover on. That way you can guide the pole back into the hole and just snap the button back on. You can just pinch the tabs under the button and push it out with a screwdriver. The earliest revision Saturns (VA0) will have a completely different layout that this one. They have the power supply, power switch, reset switch and leds all mounted on the top cover. You can tell from the outside if it's a VA0 by looking at the power supply connector (it will be larger and doesn't have a notch in the middle), and also the manufacture date will be April 1995 on the bottom sticker.
I hard one of model 1 bAk in Januáry 1996 , I got one for my 12 birthday .... Loved it . But know I have a model 2 that I got 2 years ago... Those consoles are tanks ! Really reliable consoles ...
Wow that was amazing. Never thought you'd get it to work Adam. You should autograph it and put it on eBay for some charity or something. Love your channel and never miss a video.
This video made me remember the time I tried to get a model 1 Saturn at goodwill for 99 cents before the manager stopped the transaction because they wanted more money out of me :(
caloricfoil98 yup 99 cents, the manager looked at it and said no its getting re priced, this was a like 6 years ago when I was 12 so i didnt fight it :( the system was really beat up too so maybe that was why i didnt make the effort to clean it
Awesome Score! I don't have a Saturn, but have wanted one since they were new. Haven't had any luck finding any in my area. Maybe one day I'll find one in the dumpster like you did
If you were ever curious as to what that metal ribbon thing is that holds the optical drive in place, it's a ground strap. Connecting the ground of the drive with the Saturn's main ground. This is done because the ground of the Saturn may be .1 volts and the ground of the laser may be 0 volts, this can cause a lot of problems, so they are connected to ensure both grounds are the same voltage.
Saturn's are truly well built. How many variations of the PS1 did we go through until it worked without any issues between 1995 to 2000. In fact the best PS1 is the slim PSONE.
I have a saturn i got from a good will store. with no cables.. lucky my buddy has a saturn . so we hook it up. and nothing. so we go and open it up and one of the power fuses is fried. how do i go about fixing that.
Awesome! Saving a Saturn is really something plus you can always use it as a spare part, or sell it making someone else really happy. Great advice, fixing CD based consoles is not that easy most of the time. Hope you do more of these cleaning and restoring projects. Is there anyone on youtube you could recommend if you need advice on soldering or capacitor work on the consoles? I know lukemorse does a great job teaching people to do stuff on their own, but is there someone else who you might recommend watching? I am decently knowledgable on other electronics but I don't go into the console stuff yet.
Hey Adam! I have a question about my Dreamcast, which is that everything works fine except the sound that makes weird noises and doesn't play well. Imagine that it's like playing in very slow motion but the video works perfectly fine. I have already cleaned the contact pins in the cable and in the console, I dont see any of them bent or damaged... It's very weird, I think it is something in the inside of the console. Cheers from Portugal
+AdamKoralik i have an old one back when i was a child. i used to play with my cousin in it. but no it has been stored for years. unfortuntlay all it's accasories have been lost. i can give it to you if you want
the Sega Saturn model 1 looks good, but the problem is I was playing NBA Live 98 and Madden NFL 98 on the Saturn version having an error, bugs, and glitches with my Saturn cartridge backup and re-do all over again!
Awesome stuff I brought a Saturn model 2 boxed seller said it was broken took it home to find a region swich on the side of it set it too my region an It fired right up an played games from pal and japan ain't tried any ntsc yet awesome lil things one of my fav consoles too play came with a video cd card too
Aww crap - just my luck that you tore down a later Model 1.. I have two older Model 1's... The main differences right off the top that I can tell you is that the power supply and power switch are actually attached to the lid. It's a pain - you have to carefully remove the lid from rear to front, because the power supply is plugged into the Motherboard with a pretty short cord. The other main difference is that the ribbon from the CD drive actually only has the one 90 degree fold at teh top, and comes straight down, where the connector to the MB is horizontally placed; it doesn't have the second 90 degree fold that leads to a vertically placed connector like yours. This presented a challenge for me and the two mods I wanted to perform. First, was to replace the socketed BIOS chip. The tiny grey wires that connect to the logic board on the CD assembly make it difficult to maneuver the drive around to get to it. You took the easy way out by just removing drive, shield, and motherboard all in one shot. :P The second option I wanted was to install a Universal Phantom, but the instrucitons for installing the chip to "Model 1" Saturns matches your Model 1 not mine. Yep, my attempt to mode my Saturn either way was met with all kinds of FAIL... :(
I just bought a modded saturn on eBay. I am trying to clean it out since it does not work. And it is completely different under the the top cover. I unscrewed one thing so i can slowly seperate the cover from the rest of the console and something that is not even on the saturn in this video sprung out. Well, wish me luck on fixing that then screwing it back on just to do a much less thorough cleaning lol.
Thanks for the video! I have a Model 1 myself, so if I ever have any issues this will be a useful reference. Some what related - are there any differences between the Model 1 and Model 2 outside of aesthetics (i.e. reliability issues, improvements, etc)? Thanks again.
Hey Adam, I have that model 1 Sega Saturn & it only powers on when i hold the power button, then it shuts off as soon as i release it and the power button does not stay down like it's suppose to. Can you help me with that or what should i do?
Adam, do videos on cleaning any of the following: PS3, Wii, Xbox 360, PS1 slim, Genesis model 3, or Master System model 1. PS you don't have to do these in this order. Just some thoughts :D
I need to pick one of these up. This last week I went to the local game store to get one, but I ended up getting a pristine Nomad that I managed to get for 50 bucks.
Man your model 1 is completely different from mine. My Sega Saturn power supply is on the top and beside that there no controller board it's one motherboard luckily I didn't just pull it up or RIP my Saturn 😂 thanks though this video helped out on cleaning it
Dude... My friend bought a Saturn 1st model on polish Allegro in... Not exactly great visual condicion ;-; (a lot of scratches) This tutorial will be helpful for him :) Greetings from Poland! :D
I picked up a Saturn last Saturday and it works but at some point in its life someone badly bodged it's power supply back in using hardware screws lol.
I have two second gen controllers that have issues. One the start doesn't work and the other the a button and a button don't work. Playing die hard arcade with a friend was interesting . Every time he needed to continue I had to swap them because the start button is broke then swap back. Any chance they are repairable?
Hey Adam, Have you ever thought of doing one of these for a PSP? I bought a 3000 model and it's kinda grungy. I'm slowly taking it apart, labeling where all these tiny screws go (and they're tiny) but I need to take the shell into some soapy water along with the buttons.
Adam, I have a Saturn I haven't used in years - it was given to me as a child and didn't last long because the video cable was shitty, and one of the prongs ended up breaking off inside of the port. How can I remove that prong to replace the cord and get it working again?
I still have problems finding games I like on Saturn I think it will be one last consoles I buy. So many of the games were just ported to PS1 which I already have an octa was an unlock on xbox
Hi, then. Can you give a hand, pls? I've got a Skeleton model Saturn, I've just changed the laser board and lens, and its working very well while the console is open. When I close everything the disc just wont spin. Opened console works, closed dont. Can you imagine why? Thanks a lot
this is a model 1.5 model 1 has the PSU attached to the top cover. US model number (80000) does not change but the guts do, on japan model it changes from 3200 to 3210. also big black power plug on back instead of small grey one. Good video tho.
Hi Adam, i just recently got a model 1 saturn, unscrewed the 5 screws on the bottom, pulled the top lid off. Only thing is when I did so, it didn't come right off like yours so I could clean it, there is hardware attached preventing me from just lifting it off. Did I miss a step?
@@AdamKoralik yes, so when I remove the lid it looks like the power supply is actually somehow attached to the top piece as well as a few ribbons for various components.
