www.figureitoutproductions.com Facebook: / 145760850834 In this video I clean and restore a Sega Master System Model 2. The rare NTSC gray version, not the black PAL version.
Wonder why the idea of having a "default game" on the system never caught on, that's actually brilliant, and it'd probably be more marketable than having the familiar situation of buying a console and not having any games for it.
Just fixed one of these with the gray shell, got it for $40 and was just showing a black screen. I pinpointed the issue to a bad crystal oscillator and now it works fine. It's in really good cosmetic condition too so I'm happy to have it in my collection
I really like your channel, it's been really cool! All of your videos are made very well and I really enjoy the cleaning and restoring videos. Thanks for the awesome videos, keep it up!
I dont know if anyone has commented already but the plastic door can be removed by flipping it around to the inside and it will come out easy. Thanks for the video!
I'd never seen a master system 2 in real life either until I got mine. I had an ad on craigslist saying I'd buy any sega games or consoles, and I had a guy get in contact with me who had a genesis, saturn, and master system he'd like to sell. I got them for cheap since I was prettymuch broke at the time (I'd forgot I had the ad posted) and he needed money that day and was pretty surprised it was a master system 2 when I met him, since I have 3 original versions and see those from time to time. Got a console (original) and a big stack of games (20 or so) including the original phantasy star CIB about a week later just browsing through craigslist, too for about what you can buy just the console from a game store around here, too.
Another awesome use for pledge is to polish up scratched old game disks. The glossy finish it leaves has saved many soul calibur game nights for me personally.

The Master System II was my first video console (the version with Sonic built-in), and I still have it working ! It was kind of a hot seller in France, and I can still quite easily find games for it at the flea market. While the NES has got a "cult" status and now prices of games, accessories,...are skyrocketing, the Master System has kind of got under the radar and is still affordable !
Nice tip with the Pledge. I've never thought of shining up old consoles with that, though I do use 'Endust For Electronics' to maintain already nice looking consoles (it doesn't leave a coating, just cleans). Also, I didn't know those magic erasers were micro-abrasives, I thought they were just super-amazing absorbent! :D
I'm punching myself in the throat for selling my Master System II when I was 15....It was a poor decision on my behalf, I miss that adorable little system.
God havent seen one of those in years. I was like 6 or 7 when i had my system iam 31 today geez dose time fly by fast anyway that system was awesome and alex the kid is an awesome game :)
Great video, makes me wanna clean out my Master System II, probably I will, now that i know how to do that. Thanks Adam! My MS has Alex Kidd too, but i want to get one with Sonic or the original model, which only has a hidden snail game. Not long ago, at a flea market i saw the second MS in my life, without any hookups, but the seller said that it has alex kidd, so i didn't bought it.
I once had a original sega master system back in '88 and the built in games were hang on and safari hunt (it came with 2 controllers and a light phaser). The games i used to have were ghostbusters, aztec adventure, kenseiden, rocky, fantasy zone: the maze and space harrier.
With cleaning the games I find dismantling them first allow better access to the contacts - I then use a soft eraser to rub off the physical grime, then use a soft tooth brush to remove any eraser crumbs, and compressed air, then the cue tip with either windex or rubbing alcohol! Takes longer than your method, but at least you can see how clean the contacts now are not missing any bits!
The beginning was kinda like a "how to" video, but I'm glad you didn't waste any eggs. Although I don't blame the MSII for my gaming addiction (that award goes to the N64) it was nice to see one on your channel, feeding my nostalgia. You've probably done episodes on one before but I only recently subscribed after your rants on current gen consoles. Nice hobby you have there.
Hey Adam awesome videos! I just got a job at a walgreens by my house and my girlfriend told me that they are selling a SEGA GENESIS! on store shelves I could not believe my ears I mean I didn't see it yet but it it's out there I searched online and it looks like toys r us had it as well it seemed to be a watered down version of the system but still cool never the less I know your a collector and you got me into collecting games so I thank you for that but I thought you might want to check out the system since you love Sega and always seem to like systems with different iterations thanks for the vids and inspiration........From Kellz
Those are clone consoles by AtGames, they're licensed by Sega. Basically, a crappy emulator in a box. Sega licenses it so they can make a quick buck on something they don't build or have any responsibility for.
Nice video Adam, I still need to pick one of these up, I heard Alex Kidd is quite a good game. Off topic but one question. I havent played Shenmue in quite a while, I am on the second disc, not too far into it. Should i just start a new game becaus eit would be too confusing to catch back up, or would you recommend continuing? I havent played in a long time
Really useful vid thanks dude!! Love it when so called 'scrap' can be replenished into a nice presentable piece! Also does your friend Raymond have a channel or a website?
I tried the credit card method on my NES and it sort of snagged one of the metal contacts. As I pulled outwards, the contact bent out of shape almost backwards. I bent it back in shape, but I've actually done this a couple of times... so just wanted to add a slight warning to using that method... and think I'll google that cartridge cleaner you used there. That looks pretty great.... thanks for the vid.
Damn man, that sucks! I'm sorry about that. Yeah, I'd always recommend the cartridge cleaning kit, I wish some company would make a "retro series" of them so they'd become easier to get now.
Arghhhhh - Magic Eraser again! Each to their own but it does leave scratches in the surface of the plastic!!! Look at it in the light afterwards and you will see the scratches. Meguiars PlastX is what you need, its a lot less abrasive and doesn't scratch the plastic. Great job other than that - always nice to see a system restored :)
Yeah, that magic eraser kills your textured finish on consoles. I would also just go with isopropyl alcohol instead of window cleaner. Windex uses ammonia as a drying agent but there's also detergent that can leave a film on your connectors. A quick clean but not as sterile as alcohol.
Adam have you ever considered doing a video on the model 1 Master System? I would like to see you tackle one of them. Also thank to watching your videos I was brave enough to open my model 1 Master System and it was easy to recognize what was what so thank you!
My used game store actually had one of these for a time. It was extraordinarily clean when I looked at it. I would've picked it up if it wasn't rf only and I didn't already have a Genesis and power base converter.
The Master System 1 also had a maze game hidden in there. My childhood friend had it and we played that game for hours at a time trying to beat the game. It got pretty hard for 8 year olds, lol.
I remember getting one of these for Christmas one year. Neither my dad nor I notice it said game is "BUILT IN"...we thought it was supposed to be a cartridge....(I was like 8 years old and my dad don't know jack about video games)...so we ended up going to the store to buy a game for me. After a few weeks of playing it, I put the cartridge in and it booted up "Alex Kidd in Miracle World". Apparently, the contacts on the cartridge I put in were dirty and it didn't see the game. So I took the cartridge out and turned the system on without a cartridge....thats how I found out the game was actually built-in.......you'd think we would have read the manual or something, but oh well, i got another game out of it LOL
Kensiden is my all time favorite game...I had a Sega master system when I was a kid and I got a Sega master system 2 when I was old but I sold it for 15 bucks because I was hurting for money....I need another one
Adam you had golden opportunity to troll all of us. The 'secret game' should have been you jump cutting to you playing Shenmue. Anyway, great stuff as always =p
You should buy the brazilian Master System II. Here they kept the first design of the Master System which is beautiful (well, at least I prefer Master and Mega Drive (genesis) first designs). This bring back good memories, all the afternoons that I spent playing Alex Kidd, Wonder Boy, Shinobi, California Games and others. TecToy (SEGA's partner in Brazil) did an excellent job of marketing here for this console.
ah the good old days of blowing on the cartridge slots to make the games work. didn't need to do on the SMS much always had to do it on the NES (famicom). ive got the power base converter its like a master system that plugs into your megadrive and lets you play SMS games good fun. alex kidd in miracle world is very rare I paid a lot for that
The PAL consoles came in both black and grey, i have two grey PAL ones here, and i think theyre New Zealand models. The French model had RGB out instead of the RF, but as you know they are all easily modded for that.
I didn't realise the model 2 SMS over here were that dull charcoal colour with the light grey button. Much prefer the all black version from back home. That said its region free so I don't see why it would matter ha ha. Would love to pick myself up one of these again. Choplifter is a lot of fun, played a heap as a kid.
The good side of being in Europe is that from the 3rd generation we have SCART (PERITEL). And with the oldest console, you don't need to screw wires, even old TVs have an antenna socket.
Just an FYI The 2 fine screws on the LH side you removed for the voltage regulator is connected to the heat disapator, in-between is thermal paste, if you remove the screw just above the black square you will need to clean and replace the thermal paste as you would have not a great connection between the voltage regulator and heat dissipator due to the paste being 20+!years old. I know this video is old hopefully you replaced the thermal paste to keep the regulator being able to keep cool.
Nice. Personally I never liked the model 2, just wasn't my cup of tea. But I love my Model 1, it has Hang On and a snail maze game as its pre-installed games. Choplifter is an awesome game btw, used to play that game a hell of a lot with my dad when I was kid.
Hey! Just picked up a master system 2 but i cant get picture/sound at all. It changes from static screen to black but that's all! I have replaced the voltage regulator with a new on but still nothing. What else can i do? I heard there was a way to isolate the positive on power and switch and bypass some shit but i cant find any vids on it.
They've had one of these at the local game shop where I live for months, but they want like $100 for it. I had a chance to get a regular Master System for $50 but it sold before I could make up my mind about it. The US Model 2 is quite an interesting piece, but I am not quite a hardcore enough collector to buy it when the Model 1 is half the price and has a better list of features.
Hi Adam! I'm a big fan from México (sorry for my bad English) seriosly, this console it's so rare? Because I found one in facebook market in my city and only pay $200mx (10.20ddls) and never imagine it was an uncommon console, i'm impressed. I have been looking for tutorials on the internet to mod av connections, but I can not find any information, do you know if it is possible to make this mod in a NTSC console? Greetings from Jalisco México!
i though these gray consoles with white pause button were sold only by TecToy in Brazil, and the americans and europeans were black, very interesting, i love the visual of this all black console, i would love to have one
do you happen to have an sg 1000? its the one sega system that i don't have. since i found out about its existence my sega collection feels incomplete and i want one soo bad
maybe a tip if you don't allready know. but what i use to clean consoles are those wet cloths they use to whipe babies behinds. maybe good to clean the console where the lettering is. and it's great to get rid off whatever filth cigarettes leave behind
I rebought a mastersystem 2 just recently because of it’s sleeker design,HOWEVER im am not that retisfied with it because theres a huge scratch on the back also parts of the griphandle from the door is missing and that rf signal really looks grainy( even the rf signal from my snes looks soo much better, heck theres even no channel select,am mean what a letdown, isn’t be enough that the mastersystem 2 lacks a cart port,no expansion port,no reset button,no rgb out🤨 But that cleaning kit you showed is definitely handy for me.
I found my old Master System 2 recently, but the trap door (for the carts) had shattered into a million pieces... So yaay :) ... And booo :( Also found my Mega Drive 1, Atari 2600 and a load of games. Yarr,r.. 'tis a fine haul of loot. :D
I always forget that there is a major revision of the Master System. I don't have one either one. I do have a gamegear though, so that's sort of a master system.
you know that the master system game you did get are PAL games, i might be incorrect but i think the US game are white on top and PAL are red, like i said i can be wrong.
AdamKoralik It's really odd that the console has a pause button on it, rather than a reset button. Did that mean that you had to go all the way to the console to pause the game?
Hey Adam, can you make a video showing how to repair game discs? I've gotten so many games that are absolutely destroyed and it would be nice to use them.
If I had the equipment I would. The best I can do is tell you what I do. I go to used CD stores that have disc resurfacing machines. The machines costs thousands of dollars, hence I don't own one. But they'll often clean the discs for you for a couple bucks. Doesn't work 100% of the time, you need to understand that going in. But it does save a lot of discs.
Bart Komedy No problem. They may offer "cleaning" and "disc resurfacing." Cleaning is cheaper, but disc resurfacing is more likely to work. Keep that in mind.
Oh ok I knew something was up lol thanks for the reply and keep making awesome vids .....video idea talk about the evolution and progression of wwe wrestling games or if not that fighting games I love shooters and action adventure games and who doesn't like 2d platformers but I believe the gaming world would not be what it is today without a good old button mashing wrestling/fighting game just an idea tho thanks Adam
What I find strange is that in Brazil this model is called "Master System III Compact", and they are quite common, heck I have one here, and it was the first console that I had ... And here in Brazil has a.... thing called "Master System III Super Compact", I have no idea how to describe this thing
I would love to get an import Master System 2, and replace its insides with a modded Game Gear board allowing at least s-video out. Then with a Game Gear everdrive cartridge, I can have the entire Master System and Game Gear library able to play on my television.
What it matters is that, if you wet the magic eraser it acts as a sponge, and then does not leave a residue or scratches like it did in the video. Just was trying to be helpful.
AdamKoralik when cleaning cartridges NEVER USE WINDEX it leaves a extra layer onto the pins the best way to clean the cartridge is with a white eraser it has been working perfectly for me and doesnt damage the pins
