GameStop Sold me a Stolen (& Bricked) PS5 in a Bundle

GameStop actually sold me a brand new PS5 bundle but when I went to connect the PS5 to my TV I was given an error code that Sony told me meant the PS5 was stolen.
This experience has lasted 3 months and I don't think I'll be buying another PlayStation 5 in a bundle anytime soon.

That whole situation was terrifying, truthfully. Imagine waiting for months for the retail store, that you bought *off* of, to either restock or refund you. And the fact that there was some inside problem that was out of your control makes the situation even more frustrating and confusing. I'm glad you stuck through it though, just to make others happy even if it means sacrificing your time! Bless your soul, Jake!!

I was watching this with my mom and we're glad to see you have had a positive resolution. I made my first ever video for my upcoming RU-vid Channel. Because of you and ytnextgengaming's informational videos and tweets, I was I was able to secure my PS5 from PlayStation direct when they had open release. Then the next morning I was alerted on Twitter that Amazon is doing a release. So half awake, I click on the link and it takes me straight to Amazon with the PS5 in stock. So I copped it real quick and needless to say, my sister, which has cerebral palsy, and I have a blessed Christmas. Thank you for all your time and dedication to helping us out. I got scammed on Newegg from a third party seller over ram, good thing Newegg replaced it and I got refunded and bought directly from them. Also I no longer buy from 3rd party sellers, if I see another name other then Newegg or sold and shipped by Ebay or Amazon I pass it up asap.

But it's funny that Sony has a better customer service then Nintendo because some reason Nintendo doesn't have a online chat where you have to call them like it's the 90's and online customer service doesn't exist which I hate long boring phone calls. Plus Sony will send shipping materials with a return label and setup a pickup date on the next business day for repairs which for some reason Nintendo wouldn't do.

I wonder if maybe someone figured out how to spoof the console ID. I mean, in the PS3 era it was possible to change the console ID for a banned console to unban it. However, doing this would require that you actually have another console to copy the keys from. People would get these keys from buying consoles from retailers and then returning them, but it was always hypothetically possible that if someone figured out how to calculate console keys and then test them and if that ever happened it would have resulted in pretty much every console being banned so obviously it didn't happen. Anyway, I wonder if this console was actually stolen or if someone used its keys to unban another console. Alternatively, I wonder if maybe someone purchased a console from GameStop and then swapped the stickers returning a stolen console as if it was the one that was just purchased. In that case we could be looking at a potentially widespread problem.

A more likely scenario would be to swap the console ID stickers on the outside of the console and return the wrong one, although I wonder if Sony is able to ban a console caught doing this. I mean, if you returned a banned console with different stickers that tells Sony which console ID you currently are using and they could then ban it. It would be an interesting twist though because by the time they banned such a console it would likely be in the hands of an innocent 3rd party who bought it.

Be careful - from personal experience I know that when a retailer tells you they'll refund your credit card, they are just BSing you. I have had this happen. Check your credit card company to make sure they really did refund it. If it doesn't come through in the time frame they said it would, then file a dispute with your credit card company.

@@JakeRandall last two times I tried to buy a PS5 bundle from Gamestop, I had the bundle in my cart and clicked confirm purchase and it gave me a weird error about my billing address (even though I made purchases before using the same payment method and info). Despite the error, it still put a preauthorization hold for almost $700 on my account and when I contacted gamestop they said they had no record of the purchase. So I had to wait 30 days for the hold to expire and the money to become available. 😡

Small correction - The PS5 I got from PlayStation Direct had a clear sticker, like retailers, in the middle but it had a second sticker off on the left (if facing the stickered side) that was holographic and more rectangular in shape.

I bet the console was stolen in transit to the customer who bought it from ps direct. When the thief found it no longer worked, bought one from whichever retailer they could get it from, then switched and returned it in the retailer packaging. They would get thier money back and the retailer would not be the wiser, as the retailer would not have checked the console's serial number with the box on a return.

Exactly what happened to me, bought through Psdirect and at my house waiting on the delivery that morning when it's suddenly marked as delivered. I check my cameras and no one's out there. Fast forward to me arguing with FedEx and Psdirect until finally after a week at it I was sent a new one to my girlfriend's house so as to avoid the FedEx thief. Would be wild if that was actually my ps5 he got as it was a disc version as well. All's sorted now but they wouldn't so much as acknowledge the driver as being in the wrong at FedEx so very shady.

I would report the console you were suppose to get as stolen. If the current owner overpaid a scalper for it, that's on him. Don't buy from and support scalpers, period.

Or they might have bought it off a local resale site like Facebook for below retail, and since it was at that point, lacking a box, probably sold off cheap or at retail under the guise of a parent punishing a child or something. You never know what the end-owner did to get it, I mean it might be the only big birthday gift some kid got, whose fault it absolutely isn't. In the end, they're refunding the money so another, legit PS5 can be bought, and this after he stated he was able to easily get another one. That one will match the box serial, I assume, and everything is good for the gamers. If we knew it was somebody bad, or that shady things had gone down to acquire it? That might be different. The thing is... We really don't. Better to not err on the side of callousness.

Here in ‘Murrica you ALWAYS have to follow up. Keep receipts, record conversations (where legal) - document, document, document - and don’t forget a phone or email follow up! There’s always someone somewhere who does their job just for a paycheck. Sometimes a phone call alone won’t work, sometimes even an email alone won’t work. Sometimes it takes a second call or email so you get a person that actually knows what they’re doing.

Thanks for making this video. I just got my ps5 from Playstation Direct and got the same error you got right out of the box. That sticker thing you said I will look for when my replacement comes. It blew my mind this could happen with something so expensive. The customer service person was helpful, was also surprised it happed. Yet, they did say it does occasionally happen. Banned consoles get shipped out. I was like I hope Sony fixes that. Broke my heart and my son's to not be able to play it. But wait 2 weeks to get the replacement. Glad it got fixed for you.

The scary thing is this can happen at ANY RETAILER! And the worse part is trying to prove to them WHY you have mis-matching serial numbers… So my take away here is. Buy from an authorized retailer for in store pick up. And CHECK to make sure the serial numbers match before leaving the counter.

I got my PS5 from PS Direct and it does come with the same clear sticker you're showing PLUS another small holographic sticker, so two seal stickers if you buy it from PS Direct.

So theoretically, you could track the thieves back to the source with the box, as you could track either which warehouse this came from or which customer bought this PS5, if they simply managed to buy a PS5 and swap out boxes without a connect, and just returned the stolen PS5 to Gamestop in the box since you need an id to do that. But, I bet Gamestop never investigates this, and just has Sony correct it for them as they prob have more pull, and it will just go back to Sony or get sold as used. You could take out the criminal with this information though.

My Halo SX that I stood in line for 2 hours last Monday was bricked. Had a bad power supply, where the power button would only briefly light up. Returned it for a refund rather than send it back to msft for warranty repair. Still, I had fun buying it with other Xbox fans and the unboxing was joyous. Got a 1X for Halo so I’m good.

I know what you mean about good customer service. I've had that experience with Apple recently helping finding a store with an item in stock. The person stayed on the phone with me for over an hour trying to help me.

That happened to me with an iPhone 11 via T-Mobile, phone was marked stolen I believe, first time that ever happened.

The only thing that would surprise me about Gamedtop is if they gave good, honest, quality service. The company is reprehensible and the employees are, if nothing else, guilty by association. I hope your story has a complete happy ending and I applaud you gor not reporting your console for the reason you mentioned. You're a very good person.

Hey literally saw your video a few days ago and as I snatched myself a ps5 from the latest black Friday sale on Walmart. The same thing literally happened to me. Down to even a different serial number on the box vs the console. Seeing stories online it didn't seem like a common occurrence since these are supposed to be "reliable sellers" but Im just so stunned that it just happened to me too

......I know EXACTLY what happen to that console and it's simple that was a stolen display model, someone then bought PS5 packaging online, the Gamestop employee who did it probably traded in the console for cash, and it took a couple days for the theft to be discovered.

This happens all the time. And not only with PS5s. It happens with physical games as well. The person will get an empty game jacket with no cd in it. When this is done with consoles, they have to leave the same box so that the inventory system doesn't show a mismatch.

I have been able to get my hands on a PS5 Disc version or Xbox Series X. Every time I order one it gets cancelled on me. I’ve tried twice for each console on Best Buy and Target. I’m almost at the point to buy a console from a reseller, because I’m also hearing people who ordered there’s in October are still waiting on there unit.

Is there anyway to tell if a ps5 is stolen without having access to wifi? Mine should be getting here from Amazon tomorrow and I want to know if it’s safe.
