I was just upgrading my monitor and was able to transfer my old one to my daughter, she had been using a old, small TV with a VGA input that had this resolution. I took the old monitor to try on my little “tinker” PC with a 3000G and it really helped run a lot more games so much better and makes a nice cute little low res gaming setup. I’m gonna keep it out for smaller games for guests and kids and eventually upgrade to 5600G. Great videos always, have a good one!

Honestly, if it wasn't this hard to get a decent small, low res monitor (that isn't TN - yuck!), pairing one with a 5600g or 5700g would give really nice results. They still struggle with some stuff at full HD, but at 720p you'd get smooth experience with tons of games... Those APUs are nearly on par with the 1050 non-ti showed in the video. :)

800x600 is still quite supported in some modern games, Though if you are planning on playing at a widescreen resolution I would recommend adding 1024x576 or 960x540 as a custom one. This process could also allow you (if really desperate) to lower it down to even 480x270, though only ideal for games which don't rely too much on draw distances clarity.

This is a great demonstration of why CRTs were so cool; you could change the resolution to get better performance without the graphics looking terrible from all the scaling that LCDs do. Unfortunately, there's a bit of a problem I've noticed if you're using a CRT now. Most games don't actually run in a true fullscreen mode, meaning if you change the resolution from 1600 x 1200 to 640 x 480, it doesn't actually change the desktop resolution, and only changes the render resolution and then scales it to your desktop resolution. I noticed this in particular when playing Cyberpunk 2077 a while ago. Maybe they've changed it since then, but I wouldn't hold my breath on that if they haven't.

It absolutely will not look as clean as 1080p on a 1080p monitor. It will look better than this online example, but you will not see the same clarity with 38% as many pixels. That's just physically not possible. If it was possible they never would have gone past 480p or 600p because it would have been "no different". The constant 50+ fps on all low on that trash bucket of a PC was more than worth the abysmal image quality. I remember trying to play Rainbow Six Siege and absolutely shitting out 2-4 fps. I then built my second PC, this time with a 1060, and even still, certain games, if they offered the choice to play at lower resolutions, even if I have a 32 inch monitor, I'd play on it then. Siege comes to mind first in that regard, I still played with 800x600. I no longer play Siege, and I now have a 3080 which, frankly, doesn't require me to scale anything down anymore. @@9852323 i did this: pull out the CRT, hot glue in an old dell 15" 4x3 display. Remove the motherboard and leave as just the internals as nothing but the metal plate. Mount a new motherboard (I put mine on its side with L brackets) and slimline PSU at the back. Single fan 750ti, then mount a case fan pulling air up out of the holes at the top. 8gb RAM, 2 ssds, wireless keyboard Bluetooth receiver and WiFi dongle. Then I replaced the old speakers with larger ones that I just stuck in either side behind the holes. Wired in a new power button and that was it done.

I had initially tested it on a 1080p monitor and it really struggled. But when I hooked it up to the 1366×768 monitor I was presently surprised how well it performed. All of the sudden it could handle the majority of games thrown at it. The funny part was that it really didn't look that bad and was really quite satisfying to play on.

What do you mean by aging graphics cards? I feel like this is a little bit misleading because most people may assume that this means their graphics cards will perform worse over time which is not true. As long as thermals are okay, your 10 year old graphics card should perform as well as it did when you bought it brand new (excluding factors like newer games and unstable drivers)

Nostalgia! I remember when I was stuck on an antique 640x480 monitor that physically could not run 800x600, and games were increasingly requiring this higher res as a minimum. My brother finally found a multisync monitor for me and I loved that thing. Amusingly it lasted exactly as long as I needed it to, as it died while I was offloading data off of my old computer onto the new one that I had just gotten. Many monitors and older LCDs also support 1280x1024, which is actually 720p but taller!

I used to use 1024x768 native. I had a 1366x768 monitor (Well, a TV), but due to my PC only outputting VGA (It outputted displayport too, I didn't have a compatible monitor. It was a Intel 4th gen office PC essentially), and me not having money for a GPU, I had to use 1024x768 stretched to 16:9. Then I got a DP to HDMI adapter, replaced the old TV with a new one (same native resolution, but a decade more modern, and technically having support for 1080p albeit with a few issues), and I got a new PC too, it being a 6th gen i5 office PC.

Paired with a 4:3 19" Viewsonic CRT (forget the exact model), I would play games like Half Life 2 at 1024x768 on ultra/high settings and either 75 or 90 Hz refresh rate. Those were the days... I ended up giving that computer and monitor to my nephews years later, and I think that CRT is still in use today since one's a retro gamer.

You might be remembering wrong, but around 2001-2002, 1024x768 was the high resolution. Most of us peasants with lower gpus - even with not so lowly stuff like a Geforce 6800 GS around 2004/2005 - that resolution was pretty expensive and not always necessary, since we got get away playing at 800x600 with higher refresh in that era CRTs and cheaper, crappy LCDs. I moved from 800x600 only in 2007, when I got a 17 inch LG lcd that didn't sucked. But, honestly, 800x600 was pretty sharp and nice on a CRT. And you got the added bonus of very high refresh rate with no input lag whatsoever. It was a great time.

What makes 1024x768 so great is that it's a easy resolution to get native image quality without scaling because of the 1366x768 TVs and Monitors and the fact that it's easy to get games running at this resolution. And the performance boost is not only because of the less pixels needed to render, the aspect ratio helps too reducing the extra field of view rendered in wide aspect ratios.

What I really loved about the CRT monitors, that you could play whatever resolution you wanted/or could, without any blurryness. Me and my brother had a great 19" LG Flatron which had a 1600x1200 resolution, the first PC that we connected to that CRT was a Intel Celeron 466 mhz, 320 MB 100mhz RAM and a GeForce 2 MX 400 32MB and we played everything on 800x600, especially demanding games like Max Payne. After we got an upgrade from our parents and it was a Pentium 4 2.4 ghz, 512MB DDR RAM and a GeForce 4 Ti 4200 (Legendary Card) and we could play our games in 1240x960, some in 1600x1200.

A funny fact that goes along with this video... many, by which I mean all before a certain date, projectors that claim to be 1080p are actually native 1024x768. But they use 3 lcd's to render Red, Green, and Blue separately and then combine the images using a crystal and lenses. The combined image actually has more dots than a 1080 display, but they are separate colors, your eyes blend them. Basically, if you have a projector you bought more than a few years ago because you wanted to watch your new Blu-Ray movies on a wall... that projector is probably a native 768 display and will work perfectly for this kind of gaming.
