Gaming History: Master of Magic "The game everyone wanted to remake" 

Still my favorite game all time any platform, any genre. Checked all the comments, didn't see any mention or praise of the Itemmake utility. That was the game inside the game that allowed the user to customize all of the random 250 items (weapons, armor, jewelry, etc) that could roll as part of the reward for clearing a terrain special such as a node or a dungeon. I pined for decades for this once to be rebooted. Ironically, now I've come to a place and time where I'm thankful it never was. They just don't make them like they used to. I'm confident a sequel would never have done the original justice.

I think there's a very serious problem, unless something changes in where video games are going, in that another generation or two people will straight FORGET how to make games like this.

Age of Wonders 3 is the absolute closest that any game has ever come to reproducing what MoM was. It's almost an EXACT 1/1 remake of MoM. The only thing that is different is that when your units get injured in combat and lose figures, they don't lose fighting effectiveness like they do in MoM. That's honestly the only thing that is different between the 2 games. MoM is still amazingly good, and I HIGHLY recommend you get the Caster of Magic mod for it. It fixes virtually every single bug in the game, and balances everything out very nicely. HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

Ironically, the best MoM remake was made by people, who didn't even tried to remake MoM. TW: Warhammer is the best MoM remake IMO. Yes, the combat isn't turn based and you can't build cities whereever you want. You can't craft artifacts and your hero choises are limited. But it has more MoM feel to it than games that tried to carbon copy every aspect of the original MoM. I'm talking about entirely different races, armies composed of both mobs of weekass meatshields, small elite units and single-unit war beasts or war machines. I'm talking about the world where you have to keep an eye on a mundane staff, like taxes but also watch for winds of magic. I wonder, whether a mod can make it more MoM-like?..

Master of Magic was the best. I played the crap out of it. I still want a sequel.

MoM is maybe my favorite game of all time. We need a sequel. Others have tried games like this and they always are too different. This is one of those games were all you need to do is update the graphics, change nothing at all beyond that, and it would be a blockbuster success.

The caster of magic mod recently got released as official DLC. It’s great.

Master of Magic and Master of Orion II are two of the best games ever made. Add in Heroes of Might and Magic III there and you just might have a top 3 retro list.

If Bethesda implemented these schools of magic into their elder scrolls game, playing as a mage would be a completely different game. It would encourage multiple playthroughs (what people love to do in TES games with modding), and would allow mages to become specialized in their spells, and turn magic battles into all kinds of paper, rock, and scissors.

Now that there is a date for the release of the master of magic remake, I'd love to know your opinion of a pre impression as a fellow master of magic fan. Also i love your vids. Cheers from Argentina.

This is probably my favourite game ever! So much replay ability. And just so much you can do for a game back then. I was addicted.

Well, I am still currently a huge MoM player so of course, I decided to add something to this video commentary. I just have to start off by saying if you are a player of this genre of games such as Age of Wonders 3 or Warlock: Master of the Arcane games I can only tell you that you must go back to the greatest game that started all of this game genre Master of Magic. You are probably looking it up now and looking at the graphics and are thinking this game is mental and could never come close to Age of Wonders 3 or Warlock which I agree have much better game graphics but DO NOT let that deter you from getting a copy of Master of Magic and setting it up in only a few minutes on your computer. Master of Magic truly was the best game in the 4x RPG game genre. I have eagerly awaited a true Master of Magic sequel. I do feel the diplomacy aspect of the game left a hollow empty feeling for the player but the combat spell options and overland spells and overall spells were just amazing! The whole heroes options and leveling of each individual unit just made the game amazing. I still believe a true successor of this game is possible someone who clearly understands it could remake a great successor. I awaited the Worlds of Magic game that came out a couple of years ago which declared it was a true successor at first then changed it's title to Planar Conquest, which is, in my opinion, nothing like the original master of magic. I am happy that some people are content with the remakes out there like Age of Wonders, Warlock or Planar Conquest but to me, these other games still lack the awe, wonder, and fun of the original Master of Magic. I honestly hope that someone will still make a sequel to the original Master of Magic. A true sequel only needs improved graphics better sound quality, an actual level of diplomacy in the game which I agree there is basically none in the original it needs a multiplayer option and perhaps some quest options that the heroes can undertake to get more money, XP, items etc. But in general leave almost everything else the exact same just improved sound effects with better sound quality, you can even have the same music just improved sound quality. You actually shouldn't change up the spell system keep it the exact same, maybe adding 2 or 3 different spells within each spell class type. Maybe after beating the game on the hardest difficulty setting adding a few bonus things to the account that has completed this feat but generally almost the same game. Well, those are a few of my thoughts on the issue.

Maybe it's best that MoM was left alone. I've been playing games for almost 30 years and this is still the best strategy game I've ever played. Only Civilization comes close. MoM "2" could've never been as good.

Its very funny that none of the remakes is even close to the fun you get from MoM. Personally I'm a Lords of Magic fanboy though, but I still love MoM. MoM music is awful though, but the sound effects are cool. Loved the summoning gif.

I never played "Master of Magic", but I did play "Age of Wonders" when it first came out, and I can see how much AoW was actually trying to be a sequel to MoM. All of the core elements: the magic domains, the heroes, the tactical combat, the map features, the city development, gold and magic as currencies...all of it came from Master of Magic. I think I'll have to go play MoM now.

Well it only took 6 more years...and it's literally a remake. Gameplay is pretty much the same with a reskin and some UI improvements.

Microprose was just on another level when it came to depth. Any of their games that get a remaster/sequel in the past decade just feel like a puddle.

"the game everyone wanted to remake" couldn't be a more truer statement. And lots of devs come out and pretty much say they are making one that mimics MoM. Age of Wonders SM, is my very very close #2.

The best strategy game of all time still doesn't have a newer game that copied it right. Even more amazing is they kept making Civilization games with no separate battle map. Many moved to Total War and never went back to stupid civ. And we probably won't have anything as good as the best game ever again, Vampire Bloodlines, but I hope Cyberpunk proves me wrong.

1:21 Honestly GaminGHD, I have come to the conclusion that RPGcodex isn't even a reliable source anymore as they tend to literally worship old cRPGs and disregard and modern attempt to revive the genre (except DOS2). Having said that, old cRPGs (as in: BD1&2, ICW1&2, PST and FO1&2) and DoS2 are great games (DoS2 has the best turn-based combat for me) ...however let's not be hyperbolic. I remember once when I criticized somebody's point in which he was whining about the fact that there was a public bathhouse full of nudists in PoE2 and how it was connected to SJW (???????) , for some reason he mentioned that DoS2 has better story (it's a matter of taste) and when I brought up a link to an article which said that PoE2:Enhanced Edition will feature 200.000 extra words in dialogues in order to cover plot holes, he flipped off and started personally insulting me as if by criticizing DoS2 I was insulting him.

Love the video. Age of Wonders 2: Shadow Magic was the best AoW, in my opinion any way. More troops on the battlefield and almost all of the same QoL changes as AoW3.

Nothing comes close to Master of Magic for well-balanced variations of play - there are simply ENDLESS pathways to a winning combo, and counter-measures for just about anything. All the way from going all-light and stomping on the world with Torin the Chosen, to going with Nature and spamming webs and cracks call. Have a flying, invisible unit just sit there while you cast Magic Vortex and destroy all the opponents! I think all it needs is a really good duel mod, with 2 human players and 0-3 computer players. And the ability to easily work with modern operating systems, of course.

First played MoM in 2003, and it was amazing had it installed on every computer since then. Dont play it very often but keep coming back to it. Love the fact you can cast fly on your normal water ship and have a terrifying weapon. So many Fun ways to break the game The spells are so diverse and powerful and the races play so diffrently And the ability to customize your hero and randomly generated maps Its the game that you can keep on playing Master of orion2 is great also but think MoM have more ways you can break and abuse powerful spells and races. MoM being more flawed then orian2 is why i prefer it

MAster of Orion 1 and it sliders is the most unique mechanic. so basic so good. you could have 7 years and not to know word of english, and to have 77 and to be native speaker and you will udnerstand it

Magic immunity plus weapon immunity = immortal units. Yes, this game is unbalanced, and I have yet to see any 'remakes' that can touch it. It cant be that hard, just copy what was already there, add new graphics and add another Magic color or two

MoM and MOO2 remain great examples of the alchemy of game design. Let the player play, even if it's not a Wookie.

have you tried planar conquest? it is the most faithful MoM remake with the only addition being D20 combat system.

There was a game called Lords of Magic that was a spiritual successor and played very much like a super updated version of MOM. Only difference was the focus was shifted to the units and more rpg elements and the spells and spell casters became very rare. But damn could they hit hard

lol... that title holds up very well now in 2021 when this gave it seems will have a remake. that intro reveal/remake for the remake is atrocious.

Those categories and matching colours of the different magic types are the same as in Magic The Gathering.

Wow this brings back so many great gaming memories growing up. I searched for years to find something that felt the same, and Age of Wonders 3 does do it justice. Master of Magic, what a great game!

I think I prefer the Heroes series more.

13:30 Diplomacy is completely broken in the game. I mean, broken on the level of missing features, self contradicting triggers, and war declarations that go to a different player than intended. I loved this game as a child so much.

Not sure how you can say you are satisfied with the genre when nothing to this day lives up to master of magic. It did have its balance issues but maybe that was what made it so great. It was, after all, only a single player game. So much fun, I still play it from time to time. My favorite combo is A death/chaos alchemy warlord. I would grab a sorcery spellbook because you needed counter magic. I hated that spell. I forget which order you needed to use the spells but Chaos and Black Channels were my favorite. My armies were undead monstrosities with wings or flame breath or demon skin that ate nothing and didn't care about gold. I even went so far as to figure out the font used in the unresearched spells list so I could decipher them and make sure I would get both spells in that particular game. So many rerolls! Nothing has quite scratched that itch for me and, unfortunately, I don't think anything ever will.

Master of magic I played when nobody had even heard of it. Epic gameplay but after you’re done you have a hard time remembering the gameplay. There is an update for this and it’s 5$ on gog.

PLANAR CONQUEST.....examine that! It was released months before this video posted and is the most complete and comprehensive remake. It got a ton of patches after release and has a wonderful iOS edition.

It would be cool, if there were 2 sorts of Adamantium in this game, blue Adamantium gives you +2 Bonus, but purple Adamantium gives you +3. But, it should take more time to produce such strong units.

I hope they can make a great sequel and I can play it before I die. It's like 28 years since the launch of the game and I played it back in 1994. It was my go to game for many years.

Now we have a remake coming

I still have both the manual and the spellbook. Because even as a kid I knew I had something special in hand with a game that gives you a comeplete spellbook to look shit up and... AND have an in-depth manual that goes so far into detail that you can basically copy the entire ruleset out and make a tabletop game out of it. Full stop.

I swear Richard Garfield built his fortune in no small part on the concepts laid down in this game.

What I would like to know is if anyone ever beat MoM with a perfect score/full completion. I imagine it would require a lot of luck and literally weeks of play to achieve. And of course, even if someone managed to do it they probably couldn't prove it. Love MoM

Obsidian was missing in MoM. It should give you a high resistance bonus.

I think Age of Wonders 3 is the nearest Game to Master of Magic.

For me, playing the first Age of wonders (a while back now) truly reminded me of master of magic. Previous attempts at it failed.

Civilization 2 had available an add-on that did a moderately good Master of Magic imitation.

this series makes me cry. It seems as if I have missed out on so many great games and now I have to play them. But I dont know if I have enough time to fully explore them

Master of Magic unofficial patch 1.5 and caster of magic mod 5.13 I think really helps the game. How ever I am on a quest to find a mod or way to mod it so cracks call can't be cast on heroes because F that. It is killing the hell out of all my fun.

So many games claim to be like MoM and none - absolutely none - are even close. You'd have thought an indie company could have knocked up a very close MoM clone with a modern UI and better graphics in 18 months.

Age of Wonder 3 ARE COMPLETE SHIT, since it has 3D GRAPHICS(and many other shit aspects), which automatically turn off for people who actually enjoyed pixel-based graphics(and still do prefer them to this day) which were presented in Master of Magic. I think "Age of Wonder: Shadow Magic" is the only true contender "in some ways" to Master of Magic. All other games you list it in this video like Warlock, Enchanter...etc...are crap, and they are nothing like MoM.

Man, you hyped me up. I've not grown on DOS games except Wolfenstein 3D, Original Prince of Persia, and a few point-and-click games. But I've played turn based strategies like Civ IV and V, and few more on GBA and DS. How much do you recommend this game to me? Is there any other games you suggest instead?

Ahh, how much time I spent on this game... They just announced a remake and it looks crappy, but its still Master of Magic. I do feel like you didn´t truly apreciate how powerful chaos channels can be as its a permanent buff. I used to have armies of adamantium clad champion halfling slingers flying around with chaos surge and just grabbing every single ruin and node in my path. Those cloud drakes took one to two shots to down with these nasty halflings.

MoO 1 > MoM > MoO 2. your game runs way too fast (unless thats intentionel ;) ofc). you should set your CPU cycles correctly and not on auto. i use: MoM 24000 MoO1 15000 MoO2 60000
