@@ukpkmkk_2 Well, think about it. She is speaking to non-technical politicians. And "hacker" is a dirty word to non tech people. Yet for real world security practices, getting someone to try and crack your safety measures is done all the time. When a company hires you to do it, you are an "offensive security analyst". Or, a good guy. When anyone ELSE does it, they are a hacker. Since "offensive security analyst" would mean nothing to the people she was talking to, she put it in terms they would likely understand. @tpat90
@tpat90 4 года назад
@@BruteSparta One could argue, you won't get home at all: It's 5pm. You leave your workplace and get in your car, 15 minutes of driving ahead of you. After an hour you finally exit the car park and start driving. Two hours later you arrive at the first street crossing, you noticed it by the fact that the traffic has a regular rhythm of waiting in silence and waiting whilst honking. You jump out of the car, since it won't move in the next hour and get something to eat. After a long journey your exhausted but there it is, the highway. It's 3am when your home, you think for a short moment, you brush your teeth change your clothes, you get back in the car and start driving to work. Since you got a good 3 hours sleep on the way home and you will get a few hours more on the way back you won't even be sleep deprived.
@bobjackson4287
@bobjackson4287 4 года назад
@@apmgold A little late but i can explain, i grew up there. Seattle has some of the worst traffic imaginable in the US, even places like SF LA and Vegas are not as bad. For instance i went to college in Redmond, and i lived in North Seattle. Seattle proper has bridges going north of it, west, and east and the traffic on big interstates like I5 is jammed packed every single day. A trip from my campus to home a trip of a little over 10 miles would take upwards of a hour and a half most days, crossing two major bridges (520 floating and Aurora bridge) and this was before they tolled them. Living in traffic is a thing in Seattle if you work normal hours.

Tarah clearly has her plate full with opportunities to work & make money , and she still took time out of her busy day & work schedule to debunk lobbyist bullshit. Most people who work in the industry don't bother taking time out of their day to testify in favor of these bills because there is nothing in it for them: true experts in their craft have too much paying business to make time to testify at a legislative hearing. Please give her a thank you for taking the time out of her day to come testify today. I have attended many hearings in the past five years and this was the best testimony I have ever heard. Well planned, factual, effective, and delivered on point. I stopped her on her way out to let her know how awesome I thought she was. Louis, the best way to explain this to simple people is that they own a car, the tire goes flat and they have to call the manufacture of the car to get the tire replaced/fixed or have the spare put on. They cannot use AAA, Bob's towing, or do it themselves as that might void the cars warranty.

@@clawtoris -- Haha, that's the funny part. NO, they're normies tasked with ASKING other people to explain why this is important and should be dealt with. Unfortunately, the side that wants them to go back to sleep has, literally, millions of dollars to spread around. What happens prior to meetings like this one is that the board's STAFF (usually comprised of much younger people) is sent out to gather info, chew it up, and organize it in a way that the old folks can understand. While that's happening, word of "Pending Legislation on Topic-X" is leaked so that the lobbyists get a chance to wine & dine the old folks and explain their positions on the matter -- in private, of course. I'd normally say that public hearings like this are mostly a dog & pony show -- I believe the real decision was 98% made well in advance of this meeting, via the backroom lobbyist meetings and the trading of e-mail. Of course, I don't have any proof, but I'm a bit jaded at my ripe young age of 57. 🤨

Never underestimate the impact a single person can have. I worked as a low level employee of a big utility company. Periodically employee surveys were taken. People didn’t care much about it because the general feeling was that the company didn’t really care about the results either and it was more for looks and PR so the employees didn’t put much effort in it. A question in the survey was about different social/environmental initiatives the company could do. They all were pretty “lame” like encourage staff to commute via bike or public transport. I went to my supervisor and told him all the suggestions were crap and as a utility company we could have a truly great impact if we choose to change to renewable energy. This was before renewable energy was a big thing. My supervisor looked into it and realized that we could switch to 100% renewable energy without raising the price for our consumers. My supervisor took the idea to the management and only some month later my company switched to 100% renewable energy and became a trendsetter in that field. All of that because I was not happy with the laziness of the suggested ideas and did not just fill in a box with a X but rather told my ideas to someone. Never underestimate yourself or the impact you as a person can have. Sometimes it only takes 5 minutes to talk to the right person to make a big difference. Maybe your voice, stories, ideas for right to repair you tell to someone or to a committee is what will turn the scale.

@@aaronanderson6958 So much of the problem is that companies and politicians hide behind the hope that the average person doesn't understand how electronics work. It puts the people who testify in the extremely difficult position of not only having to explain their qualifications and that they find these claims are absurd, but also to give an entire education to the audience and the congressmen who are or pretend to be ignorant about electronics within the extremely strict time limit that they are given. Otherwise, misconceptions may remain. Bad actors in congress will happily use the faintest hint of a misconception to side with the lobbyists and their money. If those misconceptions are cleared, then at least they will make a fool of themselves while pretending not to understand, in front of voters who now hopefully *do* understand. "As someone who hires in the information security industry, I know how critical it is to employ people with curious minds who want to know how things work. I want to see more of those minds working jobs here in the state of Washington." In other words, if Washington doesn't pass this bill, and other states do, the valuable potential employees and contributors to the state of Washington will simply find somewhere else to live and work, and Washington will fall behind. Tarah isn't just making a case for the consumer, she is making a fundamental connection between the existence of a proper free market and the economic success of the state.

This whole "right to repair" thing reminded me of my interaction with Asus about my laptop. For some reason Asus has a model number that's printed on the box, and etched on the outside of the computer, and then a completely separate model number for the board and internal components. Both model numbers appear on their website as being separate models, with separate pages for drivers, despite the laptop not being sold at all under the board model number. What's worse is all their technician manuals are internal. I was wanting to know the compatibility unused M.2 SSD slot on my motherboard, so they had to pull what the slot was tested for internally. The technician manual for the box model number had no mention of the slot. I told them "I'm looking at it right now", so they looked at the one for the board model number, and gave me the information I needed. I remember asking if any of this information was in a place I could access and they said no. They also said that, since the slot was only tested for SSDs 256GB and below, if I tried one at a higher capacity, they wouldn't service any issues that arose from it. To note, there's little reason for this cap to exist. It's likely, since it was an older motherboard, that 256GB SSDs were the largest commercially viable at the time, so they probably only tested that high, and are just using that as a baseline of what they'll service. TL;DR: Wanted to confirm the motherboard on my Asus laptop would support an SSD I wanted to buy. The laptop had two model numbers, and thus two internal technician manuals, only one of which had info at what the port was tested for. I had to call to get this information, and was also told that if I tired something they hadn't tested the motherboard for, they wouldn't service any issues that arose.

And its a pretty common issue with most "propietary information", I got grilled by my manager for even suggesting to use commonly available parts for a new product line, since it's not my job to design the products (I design the tools to weld and assemble the products, some Green Agricultural machines with a yellow logo that starts with John), let alone the guys that design the software that runs the machines, I find it extremely idiotic that you have to ship a 12000lbs machine back to a dealership 4 hours away, cause some ECU is failing and no one but your dealership technicians can "fix" instead of just releasing the software to 3rd party repair.

Sadly. We're basically a Corporate Oligarchy. It's absurd.

That was a good no-nonsense testimony about obvious facts from someone who is in that business for a long time. Respect and thanks.

Amazing! We need people like her to be in charge of running the country, she gets it and understands. Cheers

Take good note of the tone of voice and the rythm and pace in that lady’s speech, not only does she come out with valid points, she exposes them with the right amount of drama. Don’t laugh: it has its importance, it adds to her power of persuasion. Well done, ma’am.

*after Tarah's testimony* "Okay, next- ... Where's the mic?" *after a few moments* "There it is! Why was it on the floor?" (A long narration about a mic drop)

That was a seriously good testimony, really knocked it out of the park with the points and had the background and expert knowledge to back it up. I'd love to see more of her at future hearings. Also, thank you to anyone who goes to these in support of this bill, I am, not a repairman or involved in the repair business in any way but your points make sense to me even from a common sense level and I appreciate these people fighting to give people the right to fix they're products as they see fit. Your fighting to preserve freedom of choice and freedom itself by trying to stop these companies from controlling our products even after we have paid for them and own them.
