How are repair shops "independent" when they have to get permission and training from the manufacturer, who can just refuse? She's straight up lying.
@scottbc31h22
@scottbc31h22 4 года назад
Don't confuse what she calls independent with not authorized. The 'independent' shops she is referring to are privately owned shops (as opposed to shops owned and operated by the factory})that have been 'approved' by the factory. In some cases, the factory will provide parts and technical information. In many cases, the 'training' involves just enough information for the technician to be able to do simple repairs and simple part replacements. Some factories will not sell parts to "non authorized" technicians. Some will require parts to be returned, and if they see any evidence of unauthorized repair, the refuse to refund the HUGE core charge. I can see requiring authorized repair while a product is still under warranty, but after that, it should be the owner's choice where to have it repaired.
@zoeherriot
@zoeherriot 4 года назад
@@scottbc31h22 My flatmate used to work at an Authorized Apple Repair store. There were a lot of conditions to maintain your authorized repair status (that were onerous). They often favoured their own shops when supplying replacement parts, causing problems for the independent store. They would sell products with known defects and just supply the repair stores with parts (but again, favouring their own outlets). The price for parts was ridiculous - so for instance - Apple maintained a database of known issues - and a prescribed repair. To keep it simple, they would require the outlet to replace an entire logic board, even if the issue was obviously a single component on that board. So the price would often be more than half the cost of a new device. Which is somewhat ludicrous if you think about it. Why would a new LCD panel be more than half the cost to replace a new laptop? So - yes, you are correct about your use of "independent" - but what is frustrating is that when you become an Authorized Apple (for instance) repair store, the cost for keeping your staff educated (you have to get new certification on new product lines which happens every year or so) - maintaining parts and dealing with Apples bullshit, means you are not "independent" in the true sense of the word. You are beholden to their whims, and it can be very difficult to manage - and gives a shittier service quality to the end user. Just a funny note here - I remember they had an old mac book pro that had a defect which caused one side of the chasis to lift. The prescribed fix in the database was to put the laptop on the edge of the desk and lean on it to bend it back into shape. That cost like $100.
@jamesmeppler6375
@jamesmeppler6375 3 года назад
Because those repair people arnt paid by the product company but again by the user. User, not owner...those repair people ALSO have to pay for the training and certification. Shes not exactly lying, she's just ommiting the truth, this has been company standard since what, Playstation 2 or Xbox came out. Apple has always done this but they rip you off EVERY step of the way instead of every other.

@zealox8086
@zealox8086 4 года назад
They want a monopoly on repair so they can charge as much as they want. Just look at what Apple charges for repairs and half the time their technicians can't even diagnose the problem correctly. That becomes the norm if right-to-repair isn't protected.
@HaiHai2491
@HaiHai2491 3 года назад
the logic is that if a repair shop ruins their product (when they wouldn't have) it tarnishes that customers opinion of their company. The issue is that a repair shop might do 500 phones and those 500 people might talk to 1500 more all up and at $1200 a phone that's 2.4 million dollars of product that apple doesn't sell because of one shop. so when you think about it as apple you probably go "well they have a trillion dollars, who cares about 2.4 million, its pennies and fuck them anyway." but if you consider an upcoming company, where 2.4 million is alot of capital and necessary to grow, one bad repair shop can cause alot of damage, and at this point there isn't really anything a manufacturer can do to stop it. I think the obvious and glaring flaw in the logic is that if the repair shop fucks up 500 phones people will be like fuck that repair shop they fucked my phone, not fuck apple their phones suck. I believe fully apple just wants a monopoly on repair and will say whatever they have to to get one.

Also "without specific training they could cause a problems with electronic device" I shared my recent expierience under another video but for your entertainment ctrl+c and ctrl+v. Enjoy my story about quality of their training... Hi everyone I wanna share my recent expirience with you. Unfortunately bad customer service spreads to more and more brands. Yesterday I decided to try repair my GF's laptop. Several months before we even met, book form a shelf fell on plugged jack and broke the plug (small part of it was ripped out creating few milimetre gap between case and rest of the plug that stayed in). After this incident system started constantly switching between reproductors and headphones even tho nothing was plugged in. She went to authorised service after few days they returned it claiming they can't do anything about it (beside raplacing whole motherboard for roughly 750 USD) and asked for manipulation fee. As it was 3 years old at the time she decided that it wasn't worth to give them about half of the money that would cost new laptop just to repair this one. She turned off notifications and used it just for work, but after another month it started to have issues with overheating when turned on for longer period of time so she basicaly stopped using it. We are now dating more than 6 months and I started to be curious why she don't use it. She told me what happend and me being someone who builds and repair high cost PCs for living I offered my help. First I tried to look with magnifying glass into the plug but could not see in clearly thanks to gap between case and rest of damaged plug. Not having my tools with me I asked for screwdriver and something made from plastic that could be use to pry open the case while I went out out to buy thermal paste from near store. Scredriwer was no problem and after searching for a bit she turned to me with little plastic shoehorn in her hand (it was basicaly as good as my profi tool so I decided for keeping it because it will be funny pulling it out in front of my clients). Unfortunately/fortunately I had to disassemble whole laptop to get to plugs... For those who don't get it, plugs are one of the most common things to break. It's equivalent of disassembling whole car to replace light bulb... that is some poor design and so much for the unfortunate part. As for the fortunate part I did realize that the authorized service technician that had to do this before me was a pice of stupid dumb fuc... ehm I mean nice person... really nice person... In order to get to those plugs I had to take out cooling system (beside other things) and so did he. He either had to use especialy old, dried out thermal paste when assembling it back together or didn't even bother with that because from my expirience few months old thermal paste don't look like that burned garbage I found. I did suspect bad thermal paste when she told me about overheating but this had to be fault from that "technician" also he glued piece of rubber to the motherboard to prevent case from bending in I could somehow get this idea it was done good enough to not damge the motherboard but did he realy had to glued that right behind pover cable that had to be unplugged through that? I spend about 10 minutes to carefully puling it from motherboard, to be fair would be lot faster with hot air gun but also could be done 1cm (or 0.4 inches for you americans) away and there would be no need to remove it. When I did finaly get to those plugs I found out that they are not directly on motherboard but on separate piece. They could either replace just that one plug (more work for them) or that whole part (task for twenty minutes max), motherboard replacement wouldn't do a thing. I did a bit of searching and found that exact part for 18.99 USD and ordered it. Thanks to current global situation delivery time is about 5 weeks so I examined that damaged plug and notice that one connector inside is bended and proably causing false information false information about plugging in and out jack (this was proved as right asumption). I asked for a paperclip, made a little hook from it and after two minutes was connector in it's original shape. I put that laptop back together and after verifying that jack now works as it should have it was time for benchmark. No overheating even on max performance... So in conclusion authorised service "technician" claimed that it couldn't be done without motherboard replace. It could. He caused another problem thanks to his incompetence. Someone who knows what to do could (and did) undo his stupidity and repair the original problem in less than 40 minutes with improvised tools.

I was at my friend's house a while back helping him weld something up in his shop and a component on the welder's circuit board went out causing the solenoid that controls the flow of shielding gas to buzz constantly while the welder was powered on (it was opening and shutting rapidly due to some weird intermittent voltage) and not provide the necessary amount of gas. We opened the welder up and there was a printed schematic for the circuit board taped to the inside of the case. It came like that from the factory. After about 30 minutes we had traced the issue down to 2 possible components on the circuit board. $10 spent online for the components from an electronics parts supplier, a few days for the little chips to come in the mail, and about 30 minutes with some soldering equipment and the welder was back up and running just fine. Turned out to just be a faulty 6 pin optocoupler. Before ordering the parts we had called the local welding supply shop here to ask about repairs and they said that they'd probably need to replace the whole circuit board for around $250 and it would take 2 weeks before they could get to it....

That's why ALL 'independent' service shops in my town have folded up their tents long ago. @@wax333 You don't need to do anything with software to deal with the problem mentioned in the original post of this thread. The later is way easier if everything is documented and well defined using industry standards and/or open source software and/or hardware. Basically the more information you have access to the better. Circuit diagrams etc of the outside hardware helps a bunch, add them for the *inside* of the chips and we're even closer to figuring things out. There are open source BIOSes that works with some of AMDs CPUs and several of their GPUs work with open source drivers that could probably be made to work with the hardware even if some components where to be changed as long as the behavior of said components are well known and well defined etc.

@@randomgaming8616 Then i'd say that would present a prime business opportunity. High demand for older simpler tractors that run well and can be repaired by anybody. Low supply. A crafty company, either new or old, could step in and start selling new tractors that have the same level of complexity as a tractor from maybe a decade or two ago and steal the market from right under current manufacturers noses. No computer automation, limited creature comforts, just purely mechanical in parts that matter. Sounds like you could make a buck or two there to me.

Huawei told me product is no longer supported (not their problem) so they can't guarantee they'll be able to get the files out. And quoted me more that the phone was worth new for repair. So I took it a part with "you can't fuck it to death twice, only revive it" an I found out that despite shattered screen and broken frame, all the circuit boards looked okay. I searched the internet for a replacement screen and frame, got one for 30 usd and swapped over the insides. And it works. I'm quite sure that the screen is bootleg, but its better than nothing and more importantly I got my files. And the phone is as good as new. Will likely last another 3 years. Honestly John Deere repair are the scum of the earth. If anyone should be able to have every tool they need to fix something its farmers. As important as this interaction was that guy at the end is probably the worst up there. A farmer can't exactly bring their combine harvester that weighs 5+ tons from out in the middle of the field to a shop 50+ miles away because a sensor failed. Or worse still have a GPS guidance system stop working cause they would rather sell you a newer one. Also Deere are very restrictive about 3rd party parts for even a yard mower.

@stickyfox
@stickyfox 4 года назад
Life of the device is how long it lasts from purchase to disposal. Life of the product is how long the manufacturer keeps producing repair parts and supporting firmware updates. These are two different industry concepts and they do not mean the same thing. When you get a device with a lifetime warranty, that means the device is guaranteed to work through the lifetime of the product, not your lifetime. This isn't the problem with right to repair. The problem is that for the lifetime of the product, and afterward, the resources to effect repairs are controlled by the manufacturer and not available to other parties, so there's no competitive market for repairs.

Everyone knows monopoly's are bad, you don't need an engineering qualification to understand the concept. I think with RTR we often push way too much technical detail onto people when we should be going back to basics, get them on-board with the fact that it's a monopoly first. When someone understands that, we win, and they will ask for more detail or research it on their own. Just like what happened here with Senator Delores G Kelley.
