Garage Overhaul 2.0 (I'M GETTING BETTER AT THIS!)

Today, I'm overhauling the final piece of my garage and getting this space functional and organized! After the first storage bin wall unit build being such a huge help, I wanted to tackle the last space that wasn't working for me. And you know what? I think I'm starting to get the hang of this!

If you pre drill the hole with a smaller drill bit it does two things, it gives the screw a path to follow and by removing a small amount of the material it keeps the wood from splitting.
@simontillson482
@simontillson482 7 месяцев назад
Most peeps probably think that’s too obvious to mention, but so many DIYers seem to be unaware of this. Also, in softwood it’s best to use a fairly small drill for the pre-drilling, like 1/2 of the screw size or less. In softwood, screws rely on compressing the wood a fair bit, as well as threading into it…
@freundderuc9146
@freundderuc9146 5 месяцев назад
absolutely. Plus another thing: The way screws work is to pull 2 objects together and produce enough friction between the adjacent surfaces, ideally supported by glue. Screws are not designed to take bending or shearing forces. For this project unimportant but when you want to produce frames that must take high loads you should consider using pocket holes, since screws drilled into face side of construction will go parallel to the fibers and as a result bend them aways and you loose a lot of possible strength. But besides I am a fan of pareto: invest 20 % time to get 80 % of the result. If it fullfills your requirements who cares about the optical extras.

Hey Meg quick tip for screwing and drilling. If you use a small drill bit and drill a pilot hole into both pieces of wood you are trying to join with the screw, it makes it a lot easier and will help a ton with screws that go in at an angle.

I've always used 2 x 4s to form a bed under the panel I'm cutting, making sure that there's one on either side of the cut I'm making, maybe 2 inches apart, to provide support so the blade doesn't get pinched. The rest are to support the panel so my weight doesn't flex it. I've made dozens of full 8 ft cuts with zero problems. Love your channel and your attitude.

One piece of advice. Be careful with the circular saw. Don't cut one 2by4 in the middle using 2 boxes because the blade can be blocked and then you'll suffer a kickback and it's dangerous. Better cut letting fall one part of the cut 2by4
@Meg.August

Meg, you are the definition of knowing just enough to be dangerous, but like a 20 car pile up with a big-rig and a Cessna, you're so engaging I can't turn away. Next time predrill the toenail screws, straight down about a quarter inch then choose your angle and drill through, then put the screws in, or get a pocket hole jig. You always get it done, and this work for a while but it's still tough to watch when I see all the fail points and now you have to pull the cans out to put anything in them. Keep it up :) In a year you're going to look at this and wonder what you were thinking but by then you'll have the knowledge and skill to custom design and rebuild them better. Love your stuff :)

A few tips. Wear sturdy shoes. Sooner or later something will fall on your foot and flip-flops don't protect anything. Flip-flops are also dangerous to fall when you step back. Use screws with a torx head. This way you won't get shot out of the head. A world of difference.

In addition to all the other helpful comments, adjust the circular saw blade upwards so that only 1/4 inch sticks out the bottom of the wood, it won't rip the wood as much and will glide through what you are cutting easier! Hi from UK 🇬🇧

And toe screwing, try getting the screw started at 90 degrees, then back it out. You have a shallow pocket to stop the tip of the screw moving when you set your angle.

Another great video, Meg. I am a big fan of using pocket holes as a way of joining pieces of wood together. Using a pocket hole jig (Kreg is the most famous brand of pocket hole jigs) would have made your toenailing efforts much easier. And the connection with pocket hole screws will be super strong. My Kreg pocket hole jig is one of my favorite tools. I highly recommend it. Another great build video. I clicked the Subscribe button. Keep up the great work!

To make the long cuts, get 4 pieces of 2X lumber(it doesn't have to be the best, just make sure it doesn't have a bow in it and doesn't have to be as long as your sheet goods) and lay them across the saw horses. Line two of them up close to the cut line. This will provide support for the sheet goods and prevent it from twisting and binding. For doing the crosscut, buy a piece of rigid insulation and lay that on top of the 2X material. Set your saw to cut just through the material and the insulation will hold the piece flat and stop from twisting and binding. You can use the insulation for a long time and when one side gets really cut up, you can just flip it over. The insulation will also prevent you from accidentally cutting into the saw horses. Keep on learning!

Thank you! I actually planned it this way so that I could have an extra work bench. If I made that bottom shelf any higher I wouldn't have been able to use it how I wanted to. The truck doesn't actually fit fully inside the garage anyways, it's too long unfortunately!

Pro tip for you when it comes to getting the screws in a little easier should you take on another wood working project. You should consider making a circular saw guide for those long cuts. Plenty of how-to videos available. To cut sheet goods, lay 2X3's or 2X4's on the ground. They raise the sheet good high enough for you to adjust the blade on your saw. Store the 2X's for multiple use.

36.09 Its binding because when you cut something, either wood, metal, plastic. Pieces are angling down as they loose structural uniformity from original shape, this angling on both pieces bite into your cuting disk. To prevent this, try putting some weight on top of both opposite sides, this will help maintain straightness while you cut.
@tedwilliams8766
@tedwilliams8766 2 месяца назад
if you screw 2x4's on top of your sawhorses you can cut sheets alot easier. just make sure you change the depth of your blade to about a 1/4" deeper than what youre cutting. it makes the sawhorses a little more bulky but theyre much more functional.
@hw2508

When you cut all the pieces first, mark them with numbers and orientations and do that on your plan as well. If you wanna know if something is square, measure the two diagonals. In the Midwest US, Menards has a better drive through system. You pay in store or online, get a pick ticket and enter the gated rear/side of the store. They have outdoor materials on covered shelving along the exterior walls and multiple drive through warehouses for indoor materials including insulation. Parking next to the materials you need in bulk and directly loading them into your vehicle can’t be beat. Menards also seems to stock a much larger variety of materials compared to Home Depot and Lowe’s.

It gets quickly impossible to work anymore. But this year's pllan is to organize my work spaces and finish the unfinished tasks all around. You're toony funny but you give inspiration... Thanks for the kind words! Learning is definitely a struggle, especially at first, but it's also so fun to look back on all the progress made and getting to enjoy the projects you've accomplished! Thanks for watching!

Toenailing…I can hear the experts now, pre-drill or use a pocket jig thing. Ain’t nobody got time fo dat! I just buy the big box of screws and keep running them in till she holds. Lol. Anywhos…another smart design y’all came up with there and another entertaining video! Congrats on the continued success!!

Definitely pre-drill your holes, it will save heartache later. Otherwise, keep at it.

It pinched the blade. Supports should have been closer to the cut. 9:56

Nice build! You can predrill the hole, and it will make it easier to screw together. Great video !

Driving your truck right into the home improvement store to pick up your stuff? Well, I suppose it makes sense in Canada. Never seen anything like it on this side of the pond. If you're not in a particular hurry, you can pre-drill your screw holes (diameter a good bit less than your screws obviously), which should reduce the risk of the wood splitting a great deal.

It's very nice to have the drive-thru lumber yards here, we get so much snow and rain that it's well worth it for these locations to have them!

To install biased screws, it is better to drill a preliminary hole with a wood drill bit and then screw in, this avoids splitting the wood.

I enjoyed watching you build this. I admire people figuring out how to do things. One thing to keep in mind if in future you make heavier duty shelves, plywood has more strengh in terms of bow resistance due to the alternated direction of the individual layers. OSB can work too but would require more support 2x material; more closely spaced. What's next Meg, a mitre saw station perhaps 😃?

Hi, Meg. I've been following you for a while, and I must say I'm incredibly impressed with the skills you've developed over time! One good tip is to invest in a pair of work pants with knee pads; your knees are very vulnerable without them. Regards, a craftsman from Norway with over 10 years of experience using knee pads ;)
