I saw Garbage down in San Luis Obispo in 1999 during the MTV Campus Invasion tour (the tail-end of the Version 2.0 World Tour), and it was one of the first times they performed "Silence Is Golden." I was so completely moved and blown away by the sheer ferocity of this amazing song that I was able to keep the melody in my head for the two years. I already knew this song spoke to me and was going to be one of my new favorites. The studio recording was finally released two years later on 2001's Beautiful Garbage LP (the world moved a lot slower back then). Shirley states on this video this is the "4th last" concert, which according to wikipedia, would make this performance from Tucson, Arizona on 20 November 1999 at the McKale Center, two days before the concert I saw at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. The video looks like it is shot from a balcony and I don't think the Cal Poly venue has an upper section, but the pre-song banter is similar to what she said beforehand at the show I attended. I love this band and I think this is easily one of their greatest songs, one that demonstrates that they are truly masters of pop and monsters of rock.
It must've been before 2001, when Beautiful Garbage was released. This is like the only live version of "Silence is Golden" I've been able to find. I love it.
