It's December of 1995. I'm 18 and on my way back to the store after delivering pizzas listening to one of the local stations and this comes on. I was at the music store the next morning and bought Garbage's self titled debut CD, and soon found it was the rare record that didn't have a single bad song. Seen Shirley and The Boys at concerts more than half a dozen times through the years now. And they remain my favorite band.
I´ve never seen them live and I grew up in the ´90, when this came out ´96 I was 12 yrs and been into grunge and rock since I was 8 yrs. I am so happy for you to have seen them live and Shirley´s voice is just hauntingly beautiful and mysterious ! Lots of love from Iceland to you and everyone !!!
Same. Filming was so expensive back then so you couldn’t do much, the music video for Garbage’s ‘Push It’ cost them $ 750 000 and is one of the most expensive videos ever made
@@benwyatt7619 Makes sense I guess. I used to shoot black and white film that was mighty pricey. I still wouldn't have guessed the cost of this video though.
This video was directed by the very famous and talented french artist Stéphane Sednaoui, so definitely wasn’t low budget. He also did work for Björk, Madonna, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Massive Attack and many others. But the style used in this video is definitely cost effective.
@@martinjames4600 Did this comment relieve some of those unwanted feelings? You wrote an unnecessary, untrue, rude comment on a really great song, why? You could absolutely make the argument that they were ahead of their time; art is subjective.
This music video debuted on MTV when I was in 6th grade and I thought it was so fucking awesome from the first time I saw it a d heard the song. I saw Shirley manson and immediately thought she had to be the sexiest woman on the planet. By the time I turned 14 I had my bedroom walls and the entire ceiling completely plastered over with an awesome mix of full size posters and centerfolds from all the greatest magazines, from hustler to thrasher, hit parader to hightimes... but the best one of em all that tied the whole collage together, the one I posted front and center at the top of the wall at the foot of my quadruple stack twin mattress bed... was my Garbage poster. It had Shirley poised on all fours in fishnets crawling over the Hollywood stars walk of fame with the rest of the band standing upright behind her. In the peak of puberty I used to beat off to that picture of her like some kind of dope fiend... It was awesome! Here's to you Shirley!
it's beyond argument. it's absolute truth written into the cornerstone foundation whatever of Timespace itself. as sure as Orville Redenbacher was in the business of popping corn.
I want your dealer's number. Have you heard about Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden, Sonic Youth and A Large Etcetera? I think you would really like A Large Etcetera.
*Shirley Manson is the only woman who through the years disappears and re-appears out of nowhere and still manages to captivate me within a blink of an eye.* 👏👏👏💫😵😎👍 🎵🔥🔥🔥🌟🔥🔥🔥🎵
The 90s had so many great female front/led bands: Liz Phair, Veruca Salt, the Breeders, Hole, Garbage. Shirley has so many different looks, like it's a new band each time.
What? I'm really confused she's nowhere near as old as those who not only changed laws rights and how the world views women.. she's not even close to the first female rockstar popstar metal grunge etc. If anything I'd tell you she's possibly encouraging the victimization of women especially with the videos vs the pc age porn etc. I don't blame her for that but it is a time capsule of a society of brutality especially BDSM
@@gonagai1359 The person referred to her as a pioneer of women's freedoms. She had nothing to do with civil rights. She had nothing to do with voting. She had very little to do with what would be referred to as changing the appropriate dress code. I said very little here because there was a counter culture to the Barbie appearance by teenage girls when Shirley was popular. The BDSM style of the 1980s and 1990s well if you truly studied it Shirley potentially became an icon for women in the wrong place. The knowledge that society is made up of misogynists and rapists who prey upon those who dress a certain way. When you lure a type of girl or boy to a club a dancehall a concert. Except Shirley isn't just responsible for the live show or the dress code at the local mall... The internet is filled with wayyyy more garbage than that.
Uhm…so you’re the type who would rather blame women for how they dress rather than the men who rape? yet you say the society is made up of misogynists and rapists…I'm not sure what you’re trying to say so please make sense and elaborate…I for one don’t believe in a rape culture or feminism, it may be somewhat complicated for me to grasp but since women got the right to vote population growth has been in decline and incel men becomes more prevalent and hate between the genders rises, you know with more career options being available to women some of them say they need no man soooo….besides why push for voting when all politicians do is talk and not acting in the interest of the people who voted for them.
Hard to imagine that something so interesting was once on mainstream TV. Things have really gone downhill since then for alternative music's mass exposure.
No hay comentarios en español. Los escuché desde los 6 años. Tengo tatuado su nombre, simplemente los amo!!!! GRACIAS!!!
This is one those songs that survived the 90's. It would be revolutionary even if it was made today. Also - Shirley Manson is one tough sexy smart gal.
Veruca Salt is my favorite band of all time. They have some really good b-sides and demos as well. Also I have to throw in Babes in Toyland and The Breeders if we're taking about great female fronted bands.
Revolutionary, yes, but I don't think a song like this would even be made today. These days you're not even allowed to use certain words, much less risk your career with a title/lyrics using spicy words like queer. You'd offend too many people and there would be a pitchfork twitter cancel mob trying to destroy your livelihood, for absolutely no logical reason.
I have been in love with this band since the first time I heard them. .great thing is my daughter loves them too..one thing I shared with her that we agreed on❤
What makes her cool ! Is that she's into the music, into the bands sound, and into the fans ! Not into herself, or fake; letting us feel and enjoy her natural beat ! Her energy vibe is sincere.
@@sckmindfrud It has nothing to do with gender. People generally don't like others being pretentious and narcissistic. And nowadays there's a lot of that fakeness everywhere.
@@Pukeprincess If we're gonna act like we don't understand implication of words, she could simply mean odd. Or we can try to bring it down a bit and have a good time with some lols. lol
@@Hitoritakain this context it's supposed to mean strange or odd, as told by one of the band members. It means the boy who the song's about who's a bit queer (odd, not homosexual) and then his father hires a prostitute to "make him a normal man"
I read an article somewhere online last week (6-01-2015) of an interview with Garbage when this song came out and the band stated the song was about the difficulty of being different but not at all about homosexuality. The lyrics are, according to Garbage, about a boy who is introduced to sex by a women who was having sex with his father: "...like father, like son..." The song is WAY more complicated than superficial guessing might indicate. ♥
Richard Price Elliott they may change a little but a horror movie is always in the horror genre you can't one day call a comedy a horror movie same thing with music classical music is a class like rock and progressive etc., not to be confused with classic which I believe is when a song reaches when everyone from your children to Grandma knows the song
I'll never forget first time listening to Garbage over the house phone while struggling to understand my older Spanish speaking cousins in the Dominican Republic 🇩🇴. I was rlly young and super into Nas and hip hop in general, my pops always had the Beatles or Elton John or the Doors etc *blasting*, while my mom had the radio tuned to Merengue o Salsa, Juan Luis Gabriel comes to mind. When they introduced me to this awesome band, I thought it was so freaking cool (and weird) they listened to English music especially rock/alt out there. Music transcends, it's universal. Garbage 4 ever
Take me back to the times when this song released. Loved garbage as a kid and still love their new music and I was lucky enough to see them live for there 20 years queer tour and they were fantastic what a great band.
I still remember seeing the premier of this video on MTV back when the M meant Music. Instant crush on Shirley Manson, of course... but also loved the music and the dark style. The album this song was on is one of my all-time favorites.
The dude at 1:42, Butch Vig, produced the album 'Nevermind' by Nirvana, 'Gish' and 'Siamese Dream' by Smashing Pumpkins and several other mega hit 90s albums. And he was also in the band Garbage....
i think i must say, right you are! i had him and Jack Endino flipped in my mind for some reason. i recall there being some issue with Vig producing. i don't know if it was his Studio location in Madison, WI....i'll have to read up on it again. Thanks for the correx.
"Queer" LYRICS Hey boy, take a look at me Let me dirty up your mind I'll strip away your hard veneer And see what I can find The queerest of the queer The strangest of the strange The coldest of the cool The lamest of the lame The numbest of the dumb I hate to see you here You choke behind a smile A fake behind the fear The queerest of the queer This is what he pays me for I'll show you how it's done You learn to love the pain you feel Like father like son The queerest of the queer Hide inside your head The blindest of the blind The deadest of the dead You're hungry cause you starve While holding back the tears Choking on your smile A fake behind the fear The queerest of the queer I know what's good for you (You can touch me if you want) I know you're dying to (You can touch me if you want) I know what's good for you (You can touch me if you want) But you can't stop The queerest of the queer The strangest of the strange The coldest of the cool The lamest of the lame The numbest of the dumb I hate to see you here You choke behind a smile A fake behind the fear The queerest of the queer The strangest of the strange The coldest of the cool You're nothing special here A fake behind the fear The queerest of the queer I know what's good for you I know you're dying to I know what's good for you I bet you're dying to You can touch me if you want You can touch me if you want You can touch me You can touch me But you can't stop.
I can't really express/explain just how her voice, the music and lyrics just mezmerise and persuade you to come along for the ride. Good song .. "But you can't stop" ..
Fuck, I miss the 16mm Black & White cinematography that was so popular in the 90s. And how can this video only have 1.8M views? It's 20 years old, it should have at least 15 times that!
Agreed, but to be fair, it was only put on RU-vid in 2013. YT has been around since 05 and I know some older stuff like this (90s and early 2000 music) that was uploaded as early as 2009.
I don't understand why modern women are obsessed with dominance and power. You do realise they come across as small, fragile and weak children who have just watched their first Marvel movie and are saying I'M THE HULK IM SO STRONG AND STUNNING AND BRAVE lol
i vaguely remember her saying this song was basically her interview into the band. They asked her to write lyrics for the existing track and it went from there
I think they talked about it in the Stupid Girl documentary, that Vow was her first audition, but that in the first recording session they ended up with Vow, Stupid Girl, and Queer in one take
First time I ever heard this song I was 14 getting ready for school early in the morning and it was on vh1. Back then I listened to bands like misfits, dead Kennedy's, black flag, nofx, and on the other hand I really liked alternative like Smashing Pumpkins, nirvana and I wasn't sure where garbage fit in but I liked it. I still do all these years later and they have made some really good music over the years. Butch vig is an awesome musical engineer, he just understands music from every angle to make it revolutionary or listenable or anything he wants it to be. One of the best of our time.
La musica non ha regole...ma ha chi sa interpretare la sua natura...e adomesticarla con le parole che vengono dal pensiero...per darle poi la voce...quella che viene dal cuore... grazie Garbage...
Garbage still outstanding, they are one of the bands that made the 90's the best decade of music, Shirly has many looks, every one has alway to me been like eye candy..... with the voice and outstanding music, they will always be timeless. Yes she still is eye candy good times the 90's,
I just randomly clicked on this video and decided to watch it for a while. I kept thinking to myself, this video has nothing in common with any of my interests. Then, BAM!!! at 2:57 IT BECAME PERFECTLY CLEAR!!!!
MMD I've spend A LOT of time checking out new alternative, non mainstream, indie bands and all that stuff and I haven't found even one song as good as 90s alternative rock music. You say music is still good as it has always been, so go on and show me a song as good as 90s rock...
This song is so awesome that it doesn't sound like a 20 years old song. In fact, it sounds better than lots of "today's hits" Once a classic, always a classic!
Living in Bondi Beach in the early 90s . Watching RAGE on the tv and came across this clip blew my mind. Shirley and her raw sex appeal was undeniable. Garbage's music was also incredible. I feel so old but grateful to experience this.
Mine was "Only Happy....". They seem with a number of their songs to hit the nail on the head with the way the youth were feeling at the time. "Only Happy...." is one of my theme tunes.
I'm a really late bloomer...I'm 56 and LOVE this stuff but in the 90s I was busy listening to metal..I heard this song about two months ago for the first time and I really love it, and some others too
