I turned 40 this year and I remember sitting in a beach house on a rainy day flipping channels at 16 in 1999 and watched this video on mtv. I don’t know why it’s so engrained in me 24 years later, but this song takes me back to that summer. Agree, 90s was peak
flowerpink33 saw this live last year 💗💗💗 in Vegas! Shirley had some short white mumu on which wes/IS I think the most conservative thing I've seen her in ever lol
I saw them live in Pomona, CA . Time flies and then one day you die. To be honest I don't remember a thing about the concert other than I bought a tshirt and still have it till today. I'll be 60 in a few months.
She was a great role model for young teen girls in the 90s. I remember feeling so ugly, and thinking she was so beautiful. I got compared to her a few times though I still mostly think it was the hair and the fact that I really tried to dress like her and do similar makeup. I saw an interview with her and she talked about always feeling ugly growing up. She was so candid and humble about her very human insecurities around not being pretty enough, or good enough, but still going for her goals. She also mentioned how Siouxsie and the Banshees helped her with her insecurities, just like how Garbage did for me. It made me realize that even the most attractive people have insecurities, and everyone’s minds occasionally lie to them, but it doesn’t make it true. At least now when I feel ugly, I take it with a grain of salt, because nobody feels hot every single day. Shirley, you are still amazing, and an inspiration to so many women who found your music in our younger days. I hope you know that! I first heard this song during the end of my first on and off relationship, at 14. He was an ass... and honestly so was I at the end, but only to get the point across that I wasn’t doing that shit anymore. Never dated another ex for a second time after that.
I watched an interview with her this week (from a few years ago) which made me check the cd rack and found Garbage and 2.0. Played them non stop since and Shirley has made me a bit braver .... I’m 63 💜💜💜💜
i understand english, i know the meaning of the words but i never pieced it together to understand the lyrics were about a relationship like that. thx!!
I'm 36 years old, sometimes when the workload is to much, between house keeping, work, kids, husband, etc.. gets hard... I take my car and drive, all loud while listening these music and that is like my relieve.. brings me back to my youth when I didn't have concerns or worries. I love you Garbage, you always pull me out of depression! 💕
Ha!!! I really hate how you can commit yourself so lovingly in response to an emotional comment only to find that the auto-play takes you onto the next song & wipes out all your hard-won & just f***kin perfect reply. Bollux. Anyway, I'lllll try afudging again. But like Laura I abso love Garbage and their 101million% ability of lifting you up high and away over the brown-sludge despair of depression. Their amazing talent is so so spot on it never fails. Even when I'm not in sludge-brown depression & inadvertently hit a play Garbage button will take you on a guaranteed trip of happiness. Thank you Laura for your emotive punchlines that inspired me to reply & most of all thanks x a Zillion to Garbage. Jeez, I only discovered today that Garbage are a USA band & there I was for so many years now being so proud in thinking they were a UK birth right. Now if that does not give away some rather innovative interpretations about me then, I'm a monkeys uncle, (without being a labelled racist). ❣💞
Meh - the 80s gave us: Chrissie Hynde; Annie Lennox; Siouxsie Sioux - hell, even Kim Wilde or the Bananarama girls could sing better that 'Breathless' Billie Eilish.
I was looking for a way to say it and you sum it up perfectly...before the towers fell, before the recession(s), before everything became political, before "social" media....we didn't know how good we had it...
I see what you did there. ... I think most of this sentiment is nostalgia but then again: Yes, the 90s where the decade, when music companies narrowed in on the "perfect" formula for "The Music (C)". By the 00s, they had that perfected and that refined formula was all they ever produced. That said, there is still good music produced today - no wait, the music by formula X is good ... there is also still CREATIVE music produced today. Hey, "Strange Little Birds" came out in 2016. :-) But it's more difficult to find, you can't just turn on the radio and expect them to play special music. - Although I don't think all hope is lost, if you look at the rocket success of Billie Eilish of the last 3 years, compared to the music of the likes of Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran (who are both good musicians but have not really done anything new compared to the music trends that dominated the 00s and 10s (and honestly in an unrefined form much of the 90s, already, I mean Spice Girls? Take That? 90s!)) she has really introduced a lot of new takes on music (or at least new takes on elements, that were not popular for a while)
@@Maxuras I think we can exclude spice girls of the trend cause that style was the 5 members band recipe, like backstreet boy and n-sync and was aimed at younger audience who started listening music...
and women who actually looked like Women, not underage or the girl next door, I think it was the perfect balance, not the greased up ones of the 80ties, nor the girl next door style that came after.
First album I ever heard. I was probably about 9 or 10 and I loved it. Sadly had to recently throw the cd out because it was skipping :( made me really sad. My uncle always gave me cool cds growing up.
I was 18 when this came out too, and just moved to Los Angeles where both KROQ and KIIS FM had this on their A-List continuously. Great memories for me as well. =)
I love the melody line used on "I have run you down into the ground" (and other verses) it's a really pleasant run up the dorian scale. It works so well for the song.
The entire song has a nice classical feel notwithstanding the rock arrangement. It's no surprise that Butch Vig, who mainly wrote the music, had classical piano lessons as a kid.
Since we all seem to be sharing our ages...I'm 66 and this is my favorite band of all time. I sprang for VIP tickets on my wife/me 40th wedding anniversary because they were here in AZ directly on that date. We have a great pic with the band all holding up their fingers to show "40". What a great memory and what a fantastic band. The rock and roll hall of fame kinda' sucks because I'm betting they might not get enough support but I sure would love to see them in. Love, love, love all their music.
Indeed. I think that many if not most videos from the 90s had great effects and higher budgets than nowadays, when the music industry is all about likes on Instagram, etc.
@@paradyne1T101 I lived through the entire decade. Watching the 90s grow up trying to be just like it's older siblings and finally maturing into it's own identity was magical.
Vic Von Doom I can tell you have a wide musical taste other than DOOM what else do you like, help me discover some oldies but goodies or stuff that just dropped
I know how you feel. For me, and I'm sure a large percentage of us here and listening to the song, wish could go back in time and relive the 90s and earlier again, especially when music was actually really good.
Take me back. I was 17 in love with life, invincible and she gave me life. Now I’m 39 with two kiddos. Gotta love it, but I’d go back for a day anytime!
I'll never forget seeing this music video while at the Palm Springs mall and just being blown away. I was a kid and never see music videos like this and the music accompanying was just so damn good. Nothing like music to bring you back to a certain point in your life.
+Sergio Barragan Urbina ufff hermanooo fue una de mis mejores infancias cuando era el MTV music television mañana pop tarde indie, rock alternativo y noche hard rock y metal..!!! fue lo mejor..!!!!!
Listening to this 19 years later seems like we exited into a serious cultural decline. This was the best! So...where did it all go wrong, musically, fashion and politically ever since? I miss this time now!
It wasn't. Try listening to anything from the 50s through the 80s. Much better music. Much more upbeat. And have you forgotten the whiny girls of the 90s? "Oh, my poor vag!"
LYRICS: I'm living without you I know all about you I have run you down into the ground Spread disease about you over town I used to adore you I couldn't control you There was nothing that I wouldn't do To keep myself around and close to you Do you have an opinion? I thought you were special I thought you should know I used to amuse you I knew that I'd lose you Now you're here and begging for a chance But there's no way in hell I'd take you back Do you have an opinion? Is this song 24 years old now? Can't believe it, it still sounds so fresh. It used to be my favorite Garbage song and video and well, it still is and probably will be for as long as I live.
I love everything about this track, but maybe my favourite thing is the nods it makes to The Pretenders - there's something really cool and clever and fun about it. I did read the story behind it, but I can't remember whether the idea to do that came up during the writing of the song (because of the way the word 'special' features so memorably in 'Brass in Pocket') or during the later recording of it. I know that Shirley Manson is a big Chrissie Hynde fan, and her vocal delivery here is clearly influenced by her idol. It's not just the vocals, though - the guitar licks could be lifted from a Pretenders song too. By the time we get to the song's coda, it's become practically a full-on Pretenders tribute: 'You were the talk of the town...' I love it!
I remember the first time I saw this video. I was 13 and a huge Sci-Fi fan. I wanted them so bad to continue Queen Astarte's story... Coming back today, being a Sci-Fi novelist, I wonder if I could pick up this idea and make a rendition of Astarte's fight agains the lords of Garbania... A fully fledged novel, with Astarte's story on how the fight came to be, and how she rallyed her troops and taking point on the charge... I think a mix between Wing Commander and Battlestar Galactica (2004) could work.. I wouldn't mind a concept album by Garbage on this haha.
There was a girl who was absolutely in love with me back in the 90's who also loved this song and band. I actually loved her too, but not as much as I loved myself. What a dingus. I ended up moving away and she ended up marrying someone else. Yeah, I messed up lol. This song will always remind me of her. My bad, Brandy Nohr, for being shite to you. I hope your dude is all kinds of awesome and you're having a great life!
Such a very special song. Can listen to it over and over and over and over again which is what I am doing now. May all the gods bless Shirley forever and beyond that too. Nice shout out to Chrissie Hynde and The Pretenders at the end too. 'You were the talk of the town, you were the talk of the town....'
90s were the last decade to do music right. Take this song for example. Everything fits. Bass player gets his credit, guitars drums and synth are perfect, and Shirley is flawless. Production and mixing was amazing for back then
If you were a fan of Nirvana and The Smashing Pumpkins, you would have known this band. I’ll leave it to you to figure out why. Back then, you’d have to find the right magazines, books of friends. These days,…you already know.
@@theultrawarrior7448 I was a little kid 5 to 9 years old when Garbage was around back then. I wouldn't have paid any attention since the only exposure I had was pop music or whatever my mother had on the radio
@@joshuahernandez3216 True, but when I was little at the time things were less accessible to me and didn't have much exposure to a lot of those bands. The only earliest band I can remember was Alice In Chains, just one song played in Street Fighter II Animated Movie back in '94, but that's all I can remember. I was still in preschool at the time.

I'm old enough to remember when Garbage were big in the 90s, but wasn't old enough then to fully appreciate them. Saw them playing at the Soundwave festival in 2013 and holy shit they sound fantastic live. Have had huge respect for Garbage ever since.
I discover them in 1999 with "The world is not enough" soundtrack, and had the same feeling : I knew their name and what they looked like, but I wasn't listening to them before. I really felt that I missed their highest peak time a year too late, arriving after their world tour end, but god I was happy to discover that band.
