Much as I dislike Ostapenko's on-court personality at times, I have to say this the best I've ever seen a woman hit flat-out winners for a long time. In this form, she's virtually unplayable and frightening to watch. Her only weakness is her below-average serve.

Jelena is far from being my favourite personality on tour. She is brash and loud, and at time downright rude to players and personnel alike. That said, I have to give credit where it is due. She is on fire recently. Some exquisite shotmaking over the past couple of weeks, and making it look easy too. With this type of play consistently, we could see her up in the mix a lot more often.

Her confidence right now is very high, and no wonder, because she is in the zone. Garbi... what can I say. Your serve is a bloody disgrace. So many times, I've seen the same slow serving. With a frame as big as yours, your team have prepared you in a terrible way. You're bitting mostly 150kph serves, but should be hitting 180-190+. Damn, Clervie N. was hitting 189 kph in the 14 year old Petit As final, and YOU are a fully grown adult professional, who has had years of training, access to strength and conditioning, and the worlds best coaches. And I saw a 145 kph FIRST serve there today. What the hell??? And what's with the single mindset, no variance tactics today? No problem solving at all, just keep doing the same thing that was losing the match?? Christ, if your second serve is getting battered, you may as well try hitting 2 first serves. Change it up!! Please Garbi, get someone on your team who can help you with your serving, otherwise you are in deep shit.

Contrary to the announcer, Penko is not just about 'destructive power'. She's a very intelligent player who finds angles that other players cannot (or refuse to) play. Muguruza refused to move her feet, refused to chase balls, and had this very nonchalant attitude as if she didn't want to win. Muguruza lacked drive and fighting spirit, and fell to an opponent who was hungrier and who played more intelligent tennis.

Ostapenko is playing like the number 1 in the world. Stunning. I'm so sorry for Garbiñe. 💙

Ostapenko is playing like she's world number 1. Muguruza not being able to find any solutions. Kept hitting the ball back to her in the middle of the court allowing Ostapenko to be on the attack. Have to keep the ball away from her. Should have tried drop shots, hitting short angles, slices etc.

Ostapenko is not just winning, it is the way how she beat the top 5 players. So dominant, winners after winners, unbelievable.

Muguruza don’t strike the ball as hard as she did in 2014-2017 when she was beating Serena. She’s more passive with her shots and lots of spin on the balls.

I’ve been watching ostapenko’s matches closely even during her inconsistent form in the previous seasons. What I notice is that she’s definitely playing smarter and not going too all out in those longer rallies. She knows she’s capable of big ground strikes and hard flat shots, so going deep rather than always going for the lines makes her stay in the rally but also pushes her opponents, and puts less power in those great angles. These shots more often than not will always generate short balls from opponents and then she’ll do what she loves - to hit the winner. It’s great to see this confidence in her as she is gunning those returns and winners. She’s grown a lot, and even if she loses a set, she can always rely on this consistency tactic to carry her through the three sets (like her matches in Dubai). I really hope she starts getting to those Semis and finals in majors. This is exciting to watch.
