No need to peek over the fence! I’m taking you on a garden tour of my 1/4 acre homestead in the suburbs of Melbourne, where we grow 90% of our vegetables in our backyard. Ours may not be an 'Instagram perfect’ garden, but it’s a functional garden producing over 300 kilograms of food for us in the last 4 months.
In this episode, I’ll show you our backyard setup of 22 no-dig beds, our cellar, beehive and more. It’s winter, but we’re still growing, harvesting and of course…eating! Homegrown meals are the ultimate incentive to grow food not lawns. Stay tuned until the end to see what we cook up with delicious produce we’ve picked on our garden tour.

Hi from the Grampians.... Fantastic garden, I'm so jealous that you have a cellar. Thank you soooo much for not Americanizing, whilst I love watching some of their content, I hate the way some Aussies use names and measurements not used here. Your brassica's are lovely and leafy, you can actually cook the leaves - they cook up really well with some vinegar in the water. 💜💜💜

Yay ... I look for Melbourne gardeners. I'm around the Frankston area, and still have my garden L-Plates on. I'm impressed with your garden and your videos. Well done, I will keep watching to see your garden journey 😀

I did try to start a productive veg garden here in Frankston, however, it turned into a Possum Cafe. Those little furry vacuum cleaners from hell ate everything I planted!! Oh, they don't appear to like cherry tomatoes, LOL
@ben.strong

I have seen possums around here but for some reason I've never had any issues with them eating my produce! Ironically I think foxes may keep them at bay, as I recently found a dead possum in our backyard that had been buried, and it wasn't our dog Gino that did that!

I’m 23 living in a small town called Burringbar (near Byron Bay). I usually hate watching Aussie gardeners because for what ever reason they annoy me 😂. Glad to say you are the least annoying Aussie you-tuber I’ve come across! Happy Gardening from a Flower farmer and avid vegetable gardener! Kirra

Thanks Kirra, I’ll take that as a compliment! I’m originally from the Sunshine Coast hinterland, Burringbar sounds like a similar town to where I grew up :)

So excited to have found your channel! I love seeing beautiful, productive gardens - and yours is definitely one 😍 What an amazing lunch!! I’m from the USA, so this might not help you with your brassicas, but I found varieties specifically tailored to my area, and that made a big difference in the amount of success I had. I also covered them with insect netting and interplanted with dill. I noticed a lot of predatory wasps keeping caterpillars at bay. Good luck!! 🥦

Thanks Rachel for the kind words! thanks for the brassica tips, I do net them when they're young and the cabbage moths are still around, but interplanting with dill is one I hadn't heard before! I also agree regarding varieties, I have actually found that here , some of the hybrid brassica varieties do better than the open pollinated/ heirloom varieties.

So jealous of your established fruit trees! I'm attempting to put an orchard in, but the soil in that area is very waterlogged, so I'm going to have to go up. It's a bit of an overwhelming task now that I have to raise everything off the ground, but I'm attempting to get myself ready to tackle it. Your veg gardens are looking great, even mid-winter. Kudos. Another great vid. TY!

You produce a lot of food, that's great, every homestead should have fruit trees, fruit trees produce every year, your veggie garden is very nice, that's where I'm lacking, I can't grow veggies because of my animals, I also have jungle fowl that fly like birds, I'm planning a roof top garden for veggies.

Thanks Terry! Can look at doing a video about our irrigation for sure. Gino and the chooks do not get on very well to be honest haha. But neither are a threat to one another so its fine, and each stay on their side of the fence (for the most part!)

Hi from Eastern Victoria 👋 Are you experimenting with any perennial veg?
@ben.strong
@ben.strong 8 дней назад
Hi! Not that much in the way of perennial veg other than rhubarb. Not a big asparagus eater so have never grown that. Any others you’d recommend?
@marisaphoenix1893
@marisaphoenix1893 8 дней назад
@@ben.strong there’s too many to list once you go down that path 😊 Well worth it though if you’re aiming to be mostly self sufficient. A few favorites (greens: Okinawa Spinach, Kang Kong, Tree Kale), (tubers: Jerusalem Artichoke, Arrowroot, Yacon), (other: Egyptian walking onions, perennial leeks, Choko) etc etc there are so many. Plant once, never need to replant.
@ben.strong
@ben.strong 8 дней назад
@@marisaphoenix1893 yeah nice, I think because I’ve never eaten any of those I haven’t had the enthusiasm to grow them, but I’m becoming more interested in perennials as I’m looking for ways to save time.
