In this informative video, I share with you 5 invasive plants you should avoid growing in your garden.
Invasive plants grow prolifically and spread undesirably or even harmfully. I explain why you should never plant these particular varieties in your garden bed, how to get rid of these invasive plants, the good things about these plants, and alternatives to planting these varieties in your garden.
(For reference, I live in Zone 7A.)

Thank you for this informative video. I'm one of your international subscribers ( France) so I appreciate your including the Latin name of each plant. Th you for mentioning how dangerous the glyphosate contained in Roundup is for the environment. I hope everyone watching your video realizes how very, very dangerous it is for our health. It's been banned in France for years. Also, could you suggest a link about determining which garden zone we live in? I hope it also includes intl info. As every year we are having international commemorative ceremonies on the D Day beaches in June. Heartfelt thanks to all the brothers and sisters in arms from around the world who fought so bravely and many blessings to all those who in their daily lives keep compassion in their hearts.

Bonjour, Isabelle! ❤️ Thank you very much for saying hello and for your really thoughtful comment. Thank you for sharing about the commemorative ceremonies for D Day. France and America have a long history of being great allies and friends! 🇫🇷❤️🇺🇸 Yes, eternal thanks to our brave brothers and sisters in our armed forces! You know, I really want to get rid of the chameleon plant in my yard, but I have been so reticent to use Roundup. I didn't know that it was banned in France. Thank you for letting me know. That makes me want to try to employ every other means necessary to remove it. For determining your garden zone, here is a link to a map of Europe's hardiness zones. I think it's a good one and I hope it's helpful to you! www.gardenia.net/guide/european-hardiness-zones Thanks for being a part of my channel, and I hope you have a great rest of the week! ❤️ 🙏❤️

Kudzu or Bamboo ! My mother planted it,about 50 years ago, on a screen by the porch, as recommended and shared by a neighbor who had used it for shading her porch. WELL, it got rather out of control going up the antenna pole and on to the house gutters. Eventually , she pulled it down and must have thrown it over in the woods next door. Now, all these years later, my parents have passed and I can see the kudzu growing all over the trees in that area!!! Also, the person who bought their property apparently put some bamboo near the road , and it has grown majorly out of control in that area. In the summer when it really grows tall it actually gets wet and leans over the roadway !! I definitely won't grow either of these plants!!!

I work in a canyon in Northern AZ and the English Ivy is my biggest challenge. Even in this extremely dry place, it thrives like no other. I do the gardening at this resort so it's my goal to remove as much as possible and replace it with native species. Another plant that is extremely invasive here is Blackberries. They were brought from the east coast in the late 1800s by settlers and they completely take over our riparian area here. Virginia creeper and Oregon grape bush are also quite invasive here. We have rose of sharon, but they actually don't do a whole lot because of how dry it is here. Thanks for sharing this video.

The blackberries are from the Middle East lmao Himalayan blackberries are a treat if you know how to control them

Very informative video! Of the plants you spoke of, I have lemon balm and rose of sharon myself. The lemon balm absolutely spreads everywhere by seed, but it's not too difficult to control if you get at it with a hoe early in the Spring when it's just emerging. I have 4 rose of sharon. I may have sterile varieties because I've never found them to spread, and one of them is 20 years old. In my garden the most invasive plants are obedient plant, wisteria, and trumpet creeper. I bought obedient plant at a Master Gardener's plant sale. Two years later it had completely taken over the flower bed where I planted it. The wisteria (asian variety I presume) and trumpet creeper are terrible, and very difficult to control. I've been trying for the past 2 years to get rid of the wisteria. It keeps coming back.

Good day to you, Justina! Thank you for this, I always know when you’re presenting something for us, you will have done your research, and we will get such a great education from you. 🤗. I winced when you mentioned the English Ivy.....ugh, I have the hateful stuff in a flower bed, it’s everywhere, the trendle like vines are thick, so hard to get off of our fence! I’m hoping to dig it all up this summer. Thank you for this, so helpful as always. Xoxo❤️👌❤️

Hello, Cindy, my Friend! ❤️❤️❤️ Oh, thank you for your sweet compliment. Yes, I really do try to make sure I'm presenting accurate information. I think it's the lawyer in me that wants to gather all of the information about a subject that I possibly can. LOL! I am sorry, though, to hear that the English Ivy has taken over one of your garden beds. I'm having the same problem with the chameleon plant. I hope you're able to get it all out, but of course, don't be discouraged if it takes a few seasons to remove it all. Gardening certainly is a marathon, a long, long marathon, right? But so rewarding. XOXO! 🤗🤗🤗 Ps. How is your new limelight hydrangea doing?

I love lemon balm, but it does spread. As soon as it finishes blooming (the bees love it), cut it back to about 1/3 height

Do not plant those wild orange day lilies! It's a wild day lily that will take over and choke out an entire flower bed within two to three growing seasons. And they are difficult to remove!

Interesting and very good info. Every zone has their problem plants! I live in zone 4. I planted creeping jenny. It does spread, but so far I am able to keep it in check. I do dig up clumps to add to pots. I wish the previous owners hadn't planted the ferns that I have, because they come up EVERYWHERE!! We also inherited a yard with yellow daylilies, that seem to spread everywhere!!!! Seems like it is a constant battle with unwanted plants!

Hi, Julie! Thank you very much for watching and for your comment. I'm really glad to hear that you've been able to keep up with your creeping jenny. It's such a pretty plant IMO! We can't keep a bud on a daylilly to save our lives. The deer ravage them, even though we use Liquid Fence! It sure does seem like a constant battle with unwanted plants, and critters, too! But yes, each zone certainly has their problems. Hope you have a fun time gardening this summer, Julie! Hope you're able to fend off those ferns! :)

Not something we planted, but Bindweed is the bane of my existence. It sounds just like the Chameleon plant you mentioned. Rhisomous, deep rooted. I don't know how to remove it without chemicals, so I'm trying to starve out the rhizomes by putting it every other day. It's a pain, but if it gets rid of it without chemicals it's worth it. Haha.

Non-native wisteria ! It is everywhere here in the southeast, and has girdled many trees in my grandma’s backyard. The flowers may look pretty but it takes over quickly, Those vines are very difficult to remove as they form a lattice on the forest floor. Many of the vines around the trees are thicker than my arm !!! It’s horrible, it leaves no space for anything else.

I planted (years ago) horseradish...thinking it would be wonderful to have on hand for cookiing, etc. Problem is its creeping underground roots. Plants would pop up 20 feet away in the middle of the yard. Thought I'd never get rid of it.

I would add Jewel Weed to the never plant list...yes, it has oretty orange flowers, but it takes over and crowds out everything and spreads like a...well...a weed. Still trying to get rid of the stuff 10 years after buying our house, which had a big patch in the yard.

As much as I like monarch butterflies. I would never plant milkweed in my garden. The plant is not very attractive. It came up on its own in my garden. My husband told me it is the only plant that monarch butterfly larva eat. So I let it grow. I never got any chrysalis and now every year I get a bunch of milkweed plants. I keep pulling them up and they keep coming up. They even spread out into my yard.

Thanks for sharing this, I think the English ivy must be what’s killing my hedge, we planted some under it a few years ago and it looks like the hedge is dying, getting very thin and brown. ☹️ we have it trailing on the front of our brick 1930s house, I love it but now iam scared! And trumpet vine, beautiful, but the most invasive I have ever seen!
@MissJustinaMarie
@MissJustinaMarie 5 лет назад
Hi, Tammy! So glad you liked the video. I didn't mean to alarm you about the English ivy, I'm sorry if i did! It's so lovely on brick homes, isn't it? I would say, keep an eye on it so it doesn't take over. It does sound like it's killing the hedge you planted. Perhaps you might consider moving the hedge if you want to keep the ivy? I have heard about the invasiveness of the trumpet vine, but we don't have any of that growing in our neighborhood (thankfully!) Really, though, I think that many, if not most, fast climbers can become invasive. Thanks again for watching, Tammy! Hope you had a good Memorial Day weekend! ❤️❤️❤️

Trumpet vines & yucca. Both are incredibly invasive. They will ruin your yard and sometimes even your pavement.

One I have had and continue to have problems with is Chamomile. This plant is crazy...we have been trying to kill it in our garden for 4-5 yrs now, not a bit of luck, just keeps coming back on a daily basis ( ones shoot up overnight ). It has spread everywhere in our garden !
@MissJustinaMarie

Oh my gosh, it is the most invasive plant that I've personally encountered. We had it removed a few weeks ago, but I'm sure it will take several iterations for it to be gone forever. Fingers crossed! What I may do later on when it thins out is to paint the leaves with a paint brush dipped in glyphosate. I hate the idea of using toxic chemicals, but if applied sparingly and very precisely to only the leaves, it may do the trick without contaminating the whole garden bed with chemicals. I will keep you posted in the Spring. Thank you very much for watching!

@@TSD0416 Sorry - I am the last person to have good advice. I bought chamomile seeds, and I found out too late it was the super aggressive invasive kind - it is HEL!!! Two years later now from that first post I typed and we are still fighting it!

@@fesswah Lol 😂😂😂 your comment made me laugh. Thank you. My mama says there are hidden blessings in every struggle. You can harvest your chamomile, dry it, package it and sell it as chamomile tea and make a decent side hustle from your invasive chamomile. That’s what I’m trying to do, but I can’t get it to grow in my backyard. You are very lucky my dear. You just have to figure out a way to turn your chamomile into a cash cow. 😄😄😄

Oh no! I just planted the taller kind in my flower cutting garden and sprinkled the seeds around in several beds, "just for a few extra patches." Maybe I should pull them now before they're a problem!

This video just talks bad about these plants. IMO you should of talked about methods of how and where to plant the variety of plants you talked about. Not everyone plants everything in the ground garden, and you kind of generalized every garden to be an in-ground. Many methods on how/when to plant all these wonderful plants. Lattice trellis, metal trellis, wood trellis, a DIY Chichen wire trellis, raised beds, large pots, just to name a few things.

But birds and insects can still carry these plants to our native habitats. Even in pots most are not safe to plant. While you can control it crawling out of that pot, you can’t control insects etc from carrying it to our native habitats. Most people forget about the fact that these can still be carried away by the wind and critters, birds, insects.
