Thank you so much for posting these tutorials. Most REM guitar lesson videos bypass the IRS years, instead focusing on the more popular stuff. They definitely never go as far back as Chronic Town.

AMEN to that!

Oh and the C Major chord is obviously a c major chord but it can also be interpreted as an Am7sus4/c

Thanks for the lesson. The only thing missing (unless I missed it) is the chorus, which is D, G and a standard A.

Yes it's missing

The open chords are, given that the high E has been dropped down to D are these: Opening - G (since 1 string 5 fret is now a G note.; then it is a G mag 7 ( since the first fret on the 4th fret js now an F# note and that note is the major 7; then goes to a straight E minor chord with a G in the base. Then just a G chord played anyway you like although the d is played on the B string Verses pretty straight forward - D C G then to the unique use of A7 sus 4 and then with an A9 chord riff. Break is straight Em then to an F#minor Major 7 since the first sting second fret is now your E note and that is the minor 7th in the F#minor chord. Any questions just reply to me.😅

Sweet job! Maybe throw in the chorus transition for anyone that doesn't know with alt tuning?

Great lesson - thanks for sharing! one of my all time favorites from their early days! To add re. G chord @ 4:15
@rickshane6210
@rickshane6210 5 лет назад
G chord @ 4:15 could be played on those 4 strings without fretting anything. Tuning 6th string to a D gives you the bottom end of the K. Richards open G chord. Makes it a quicker to go to C chord

How can you know and teach these REM songs and not know the names of the chords? I am not trying to be sarcastic. If you care, I can tell you the names of all the chords for this song in dropped D tuning. Well it’s actually not dropped D tuning but just lowering the high E a whole step. I will say, in my opinion, it is a very good tutorial and about as close as you can get to the way Peter played it on Chronic Town. One thing- you omitted the “Gardening at Night” chorus which is very pedestrian- G A7 back to D.

Thanks Dead Letter...that drop D on the high E does make the difference, huh? I wish I "wasn't that good" (as Peter claims) when I was picking up the guitar :-)

@@r.e.m.guitarlessonscovers9654 found a cool 1985 video where you can see what Peter is really going on the bridge. Check it out on RU-vid - Chateau Neuf Oslo 1985. Hope all is well!!

Hey I'm sorry this has nothing to do with the video, but do you take requests for songs? If so I would like to recommend "Can't get there from here" If you would. Thanks and great lesson.

In the part that's Em and Fm... how do you make the F#m chord, I'm confused. Is it x44220?

@@r.e.m.guitarlessonscovers9654 first of all... thanks a lot for these tutorials, I have spent so many hours watching them, I think you're the best teacher on youtube, and if it wasn't for your these my guitar would probably be collecting dust right now. I truly admire you sir. I hope you make new ones soon! In this part of this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rur3R_4AOaM.html you say that you can't actually fret the first string when you get to the F#m that's why I thought you made a barre with you first finger but leaving the first string open (an awkward position that I'm not sure I'm capable of doing)

That chord you're talking about around 9:20, is maybe the chord that starts The Chorus and the Ring?

This song was written in the 80s when you couldn't grow pot legally.

Could you possibly provide the strum pattern for the first part when you do the C after the G? As I understand it, the pattern for the song is DDUUDU, but I can't find a way to fit the C, with all the hammers on and off, into that. Is it a different strum pattern there? I saw the video where you played it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WwLkoXdAFrU.html, but even when I slow it down, I can't quite catch the strum pattern. Thanks.

Hey thanks so much Graham for checking out the video. I am not so great at explaining strumming patterns - much easier for me to just play it. Sorry I can't help with this one :-(
