Yes I definitely have worked on my self control (and shelf control haha) lately on the buying new books side of things, I just need to go through the things that don’t bring me joy anymore or maybe never did and I just bought them to buy them. Hahaha but yes there could definitely be worse vices out there.
hearing you talk about your reasons for weeding out not just your books but your things, even not being a minimalist, i genuinely recommend marie kondo and her method of decluttering. it's not about minimalism, rather it's about what you said - how something makes you feel. does it spark joy? if not, thank it and let it go. i firmly believe that when we have organized surroundings, it helps us with out inner feelings, emotions, and decluttering our space declutters our mind. good luck on your journey and i'm glad i found your channel!
I’ve tried Marie Kondo in the past but I think at the wrong time, I wasn’t mentally prepared. I would definitely like to give her another try soon now that I am in a better mental place and really want to organize myself and my surroundings-I fully agree having an organized space is so important for having an organized mind and spirit. I’m doing well, thank you! I hope you’re also well. I think once I start getting into the habit of using the library again some of that fear of missing out might stop because I can borrow a book I’m less sure of, at least I hope.

I'm going through something very similar to you and my main reason for culling my shelves and honestly evaluating the personal value of certain books right now is $$money$$. I've been spending a lot of money re-imagining my book shelves after literally a decades-long reading break. So many great books have been released while I wasn't paying attention, and I too really enjoy special editions of book classics. Like you, I only buy special editions of books I love, i.e., no limit on Jane Austen. I'm not on a super-strict book buying ban at the moment, but I'm definitely reading books that I own. You mentioned the library and I'm there for it. When I get recommendations, and do the research, for books I may like, I put them in my newly-created Amazon list called "GET FROM LIBRARY."
