Rereading the Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson is not just about experiencing the full context of the events, but also about seeing the narrative from a new perspective.
This is the first of my videos on the MBotF from a re-read perspective and how knowledge of who the ultimate narrator of the series is gives readers a different view of the events, their meaning, and a new way to interpret what is happening on the page.
Gardens of the Moon as the first book throws the reader into the epic narrative, but on a re-read it is a comfortable and known world, so in many ways it reads as a very different story.

What an excellent video. Apart from looking at GotM from the perspective of Kaminsod, there are little hints at the larger mythos of the world involving the bigger players. The most obvious one for me is the epigraph of chapter 3 which is an excerpt from Gothos Folly randomly praising the Thelomen Tarthenol Toblakai (around the time we are introduced to Bellurdan), but knowing that Icarium is half Toblakai with Gothos as his father- that bit of poetry hits very different. Not in the least because it's from a self proclaimed Jaghut prick. There's also a little throwaway line of how the timekeeping at darujhistan is done by a device created by Icarium. His presence is seen from book 1 and till book 9, we really have no clue about his importance to the entire magic system. Another little detail that carries from Gardens to tCG is that Crokus in the epilogue notices wild turnips growing by the way side when he rides towards the little fishing village. Rigga had a bag full of turnips and tallow candles that spilled out when she died in chapter 1. I haven't finished PTA so maybe I'm missing some nuance, but by choosing the name Sorry, we see Cotillion set out on a path from ruthless assassin god to a humane one, ultimately ending with his easily misunderstood gesture of freeing Kaminsod by backstabbing him. Anyway thanks for this AP, it was great to listen to your thoughts. If you do more, I'd love to hear your take on Kruppe since Kaminsod has collab'd with him for nearly 1/10th of his story :)
@ACriticalDragon
@ACriticalDragon Год назад
Thank you very much. I am glad that you enjoyed it. The discussion of Kruppe specifically will probably be in Toll the Hounds as that is when it is most relevant.
@Paul_van_Doleweerd
@Paul_van_Doleweerd Год назад
There are lots of tiny details that are also foreshadowing, like Sorry's muddy feet when she approaches the soldiers wanting to join up and the one muses how there has been no rain and it is in fact dried blood. A tiny detail of her past, pointing to her future.

Fascinating, AP. On your observations about gods and their powers, I was quite struck in GotM by the information K’rul provides, namely about gods losing power and influence as their mortal followings diminish. I thought this was an interesting observation on religion, but now I’m trying to ponder it from Kaminsod’s perspective. 🤷‍♂️
@ACriticalDragon
@ACriticalDragon Год назад
That is a really interesting point, and one I might bring up with Erikson at some point, because I think with Kharkanas we get a bit more nuance to this discussion.

As a fairly slow reader, I don't tend to do re-reads. To much out there I want to get to. GotM remains the only book I've ever re-read, and I did that immediately after finishing The Crippled God. Must be a unique series to make me do that!

One of my favourite things about books is revisiting them to engage with them a bit deeper rather than just finding out what is going to happen next. I still love novelty and new adventures, but there is something special about revisiting a book and finding new and interesting things in it.

Amazing video AP!! Wonderful insights as always. I particularly liked the comparisons of Lorne to Tavore and Tool to Kaminsod. The adjunct comparison in some ways is obvious, but the specifics you hoped in on - the Pale dinner scene vs Malaz city, and Lorne standing with the Empire vs Tavore not… that is awesome!!

I really enjoy this format. I have not yet started my planned reread of the series, but even in retrospect many things become more apparant this way. Another question: Are you following the critical role animation show over on Amazon? I think it is a fascinating example of adapting a ludic narrative to another medium. Apart from being quite entertaining in its own right.

@Rurtanar
@Rurtanar Год назад
@@ACriticalDragon Originally it was a group of voice actors playing DnD, but they have since gathered fundings to adapt the story of their game into an animation, with the players reprising their characters. It is a decent Tolkien-esque Fantasy story on its own, but you have moments in the show, where fumbled dicerolls or critical successes become apparent. The game background stays recognizable. The characters start out as tropes (lusty gnome bard, half-elf druid, ranger and thief, dense barbarian) but that is part of the origin in DnD, i guess. Kind off comparable to the Forgotten Realms novels by Salvatore in that.
