There are as many different views of what a garden or farm is, as there are farmers and gardeners. And a lot of it has to do with one's culture, experience, or perspective.There are numerous classifications for gardeners, farmers, and the agriculture they practice these days (homesteader, commercial, organic, community supported agriculture, subsistence, permaculture, natural, sustainable agriculture) and all kinds of places to practice these methods (homestead, commercial farm, organic farm, subsistence farm, mini farm, micro farm, hobby farm, cottage farm, small farm).
Farming and gardening is becoming popular again, but knowing where you fit in to this vast world of farms and farming methods is the first step in knowing what you’re trying to accomplish on your farm or in your garden. In this 13th episode of The Farm Hand's Companion Show, Pa Mac explores these things-giving historical perspective along the way-while presenting some of the handicaps he'll be overcoming with his own farm and garden. You'll learn the differences between a garden, a truck patch, and a field.
Be sure and subscribe to the Farm Hand's Companion channel to keep up with the progress as Pa Mac takes an undeveloped piece of property and turns it into a small subsistence farm. Watch for new episodes as often as Pa Mac can crank 'em out and still run a farm. (As long as he's alive and kicking, he's most assuredly farming and filming!)
Also visit www.farmhandscompanion.com to find articles, posts, photographs, and encouragement for today's self-sufficient farm or homestead. (And be sure to check out the General Store for books or DVD's by Pa Mac.)

Folks ought to keep their feet firmly planted in the dirt. Grow things. Enjoy animals, sunshine, and God's good earth. Thanks for the video, sir! The boys are already thrilled at the prospect of watching it tomorrow. Any time we ride in the car, they beg for the laptop so they can turn on an episode of your show. The log chicken coop video is a special favorite; they bob their little heads to the music and daydream about building their own chicken shack. Take care, brother.

I love this series! I too am trying to re-claim the small farm of my childhood. What a ton of work! I consider myself a homesteader and I have been living this weird life for the last 33+ years even though most of the time I was in the middle of a big city. I too have a rich tradition of farmers in the family, although it skipped entirely the two generations just before me. Some of us have always just heard the beat of a different tune ... and my tune has quite a bit of banjo and dulcimer in it. LOL

We did truck patch gardening. We called it a truck patch because you grew so much of something that you had to have a truck to haul it out of the garden. We did over an acre of pumpkins, an acre of sweet corn, 2 acres of pop corn, 1/2 acre of white crook neck squash, 1/2 acre of tomatoes. When time to harvest, we actually took our tall sided wagon attached to our tractor and filled it with produce (except tomatoes, which where done by 5 gallon buckets)

I wish that I could share your videos with everyone I know. You have far more going on in your content than I think you yourself even realize. I never thought that a ‘gardening’ video would bring me to tears... But the funny thing is its not just this video, it’s every one you have. It makes me wanna shake people and make them watch and scream, ‘This is what you need to see!’ Many prayers and blessings be poured upon you and your family. I thank you from the depths of my soul for you sharing of your experiences. Please keep them coming. You inspire me secondly only to the Good News. I thank you so much for sharing your insights... And this coming from a practically stay at home dad if two boys with barely enough time to keep the house in order. I have my plans too, and the good Lord willing, I’ll get to teach them what I was taught since my earliest memories. God bless you and yours.

Hello Pa Mac, great to see your progress! Don't know how I missed this until today, we have been looking forward to seeing an update from you. We are two years into transforming what used to be a farm many years ago back into a homestead. All that was left was raw land, but some good soil and a spring that runs through it. We planted our first garden just a few years ago, so lots to learn for us folks in our 40's just getting started! Your videos provide us with a lot of laughs and inspiration, thank you

Somehow I missed this being posted, so I am glad I checked your channel and found I had missed this episode. Especially since I really enjoyed the whole breaking down the labeling and naming. No matter what name used, you are producing some very appreciated videos that help folks who go by many different labels but in essence are all doing something similar, getting their hands dirty and producing food. For themselves, others, or even commercially. I have seen quite a big resurgence in Back to the Land type homesteading. For many various reasons people are heading back to living and working on land. Building up many different takes on how to homestead, or go off grid, or do organic, or permaculture, or be a prepper. I think it is great. While there was a back to land movement back in the 60-70's it was isolating, but now days most of these folks make sure to have internet. The internet has helped build community of these like minded folks even when they are across the country, or even the world from each other. Knowledge is shared, emotional support is given, advice and suggestion easy to get when you have questions, examples of what works and what doesn't available to research, and so much more. I think this modern back to land movement is going to succeed a lot more than previous one due to this ability to stay connected.

My great Uncle Bill was a truck farmer. His big cash crop was first to market with tomatoes. He would start them from seed on cookie trays in the window, then to the cold frame and finally to the garden. After the first rush of that crop it was pole beans, bush beans, lima beans, and lady peas. He and Aunt Mary lived in a shotgun house with electricity, but no indoor plumbing for years. Their water came off of the roof into a cistern with a pitcher pump and quart jar full of water to prime the pump with. They had chickens for eggs and meat. Uncle Bill used a mule to work his farm, until the mule died. From then on a neighbor would come over with an 8N tractor and break the ground in his field each year. It was a small field only about 2 acres or so. When the water district came down the road he latched on and added a bedroom bathroom and had water run into the kitchen. Aunt Mary and Uncle Bill were married for over 50 years and subsistence farming is all that they knew.

Thank you for another great video - very thoughtful. As we work to develop our property we too have been faced with a myriad of "definitions", all with good people behind them who have great "systems" that we have thought about copying. What we're starting to learn, however, is to just watch and listen to our land, take the best from the advice of others (and ancestors, as you note), and do the best we can, God willing. Can't wait to see what direction you go!

Glad to see you back again! We're at a similar stage. We just moved onto our farm, got a few goats and a donkey but were too late to get in a spring garden. After closer inspection of our crop area we feel it necessary to make it a little more conducive to sustained gardening so we may not produce too much this year, perhaps a fall garden.

On another note, how do you feel about burning wood and spreading the ashes on the soil? Does that help improve the soil? Can it hurt? I thought that may be why you had that fire burning. Nice turnip greens, by the way! We grew some here a few years ago. The greens did good, but the turnips never amounted to much.
@farmhandscompanion
@farmhandscompanion 8 лет назад
+SouthernPitt Hey SouthernPitt, I feel real good about spreading hardwood ashes on the soil. It tends to bring a touch more sweetening to a sour (acidic) dirt. I generally spread em from my fireplace through the winter over the garden and over areas that will soon be gardened or cropped. I do it very sparingly, though; it's not something you want to over-do or it could set things back awhile. Thanks, too, for your kind words about the show, SouthernPitt!

Really enjoy your common sense approach to everything, along with your sense of humour! If you make many videos like this one, you wont have time for farming!
