Gardner Douglas 427 - Is It A Real GT Car? - With Richard Hammond 

I used to work for Gardner Douglas and helped build that car!

I used my original 427 Cobra, I purchased in 1968, as my every day car for the first 4 years I owned it. Now I was in Southern California not England. I put 48,000 miles on it in those 4 years. It included driving it to work, drag racing, slaloms, and some 12 hour raleys. I also did a number of road trips including an 800 mile honeymoon.

I would take a nice replica Cobra Daytona Coupe (Superformance) any day over this. Never liked the look of the roadster with a hard top, though this one looks better than the early Shelby roadsters with a hastily made hardtop in the attempt to get more speed out of it - the very reason the Daytona was created. He mentions the original ladder frame chassis was incapable of handling the "big" V8. The 289 worked fine in that (English) chassis - Tojeiro, with slight mods. The 427 was an entirely new and much stronger 4" steel tube chassis, American designed, specifically to handle the massive torque of the 427 FE engine. That chassis was more than capable of handling the huge increase in power and torque!

Was the hamster on caffeine? He seems more hyper than usual.
