After getting caught in a storm where I realized that my tiny hand held GPS was too hard to see, I decided that it was time to upgrade. In this video, I will show you how to install a GPS chartplotter on a 2021 Yamaha FX Cruiser SVHO. It's not as hard as you may think. For the install, I chose a Garmin Echomap uhd 64cv chartplotter with transducer. It has a nice 6 inch screen that can easily be seen in any conditions. To mount the plotter, I chose to purchase a rack from Boondocks PWC. Prior to my purchase, I talked with Loren who you can tell takes pride in his work. He listens to what you say about what you want and how you ride and he makes a custom rack for mounting equipment on your ski. I was very impressed with the finished product.
You can find him at www.boondocksp... or on Facebook at / boondockspwc
While this install shows how it is done on a Yamaha, I think that you will find such an install just as easy but slightly different on a Sea-Doo or Kawasaki.

A little tip from a veteran skii mechanic---place 2 beach towels in footwells , you can place your bolts and tools there. the dip of footwell helps keep them there. The towel overhanging over bondline also helps stop scratches from your belt etc from rubbing over the hull and scratching it. Great vid. hopefully buying my 3rd total skii this year. adding to the fleet. 2023 vxc tr1 longest range of any skii should b 110 miles on the skiis tank.

Hi Captain Frank. Quick note to say, “Thank You”!!! After watching your video, I purchased the Garmin Echomap UHD 74SV (I prefer the touchscreen & wanted a large enough chart plotter) and contacted Loren at BoondocksPWC for a RAM ball mount. Loren was awesome and his instructors for the mount install were great. I already had a Garmin Stryker with transducer previously installed. By Yamaha dealer. After not getting call back from an installer to install the new Garmin unit, I installed it myself based on your detailed video vlog. I have a 2019 Yamaha FX SVHO Limited. The new Garmin works perfect. Thanks a million. Your video “walked me through” this DIY Project. Stay well…

Captain Frank, thank you for your excellent information and videos! With your information I was able to successfully install my Garmin 64CV and transducer in my 2019 Waverunner FX SVHO. I found that using duct tape to test run the transducer location did not work. I almost gave up installing the transducer inside the hull, but then tried putting the transducer in a (1/4 full) zip lock bag of water. With the transducer in a bag of water siting flush on the bottom (in several places inside the hull) I received positive results with the transducer working. I installed the transducer on the starboard side using one pound of duct seal putty. It helped me to preform the shape of the transducer into the duct seal before placing the duct seal inside the hull. I also put duct tap over the mounting screw area of the transducer. Thanks so much from your fan in Sneads Ferry, NC. Janice.

Good morning, I just wanted to take a minute and let you know how much I appreciate this video. I followed your steps and successfully installed my unit. As you know, I had a couple of questions for you in the process. I purchased the rack from Boondock and as you stated it was amazing. What shocked me was the transducer actually worked the way you said it would. I had not seen that done anywhere else or by anybody else I would’ve never in 1 million years thought to do something like that and I just want to take a moment and thank you very much. I live and ride all throughout Southwest Florida. Anytime you’re down in this area let me know.

One other thing I wanted to mention earlier, I had real question marks about the transducer working because you have installed it in a 21. Mine is a 22 and as you know, the hull is different in the 22s. They went back to fiberglass. I was concerned that you had the success on your hull but I wouldn’t on mine so just in case, anyone reaches out to you in the future, it works perfectly in a fiberglass hull as well.

Thank you for answering a question that up until now nobody was able to answer. I have a Garmin Echomap Plus 74cv with the long GT23M-TM Clearview Transducer. Nobody, until you, could give me a straight answer as to whether or not it will work inside the hull of my Yamaha Jetski. Going to test out my duct seal transducer in my 2007 VX110 tomorrow. I used 1/2 lb and rolled it into a small log under the transducer. using a garmin gt20m. DIdn't push down quite as hard as you but it is a solid surface. Mine is SMC hull, so hope it's not too thick. I put a 73CV in my FX HO and took the 4 year old 53CV and am putting it on the VX110. Will get a quick video once I confirm transducer works.
@factionfx
@factionfx Год назад
Update, mine works shooting through the SMC hull. It works in forward and reverse as long as depth is over 9 feet. (the external transducer loses bottom at idles speeds, neutral running, or reverse. Works at full speed (about 46 right now on my VX110). However, the unit doesn't "read" the depth correctly (at all) under 9 feet. I can mostly see the depth on the visual down to around 4ft, it just doesn't show me the number like it knows what it is. I'm going to order a 53cv uhd2, i think the algorithms are better in the new head units. Will get an update video on mine soon. Good enough for now. Thanks for the duct putty tip....what a lifesaver!

The 2023's have built-in GPS which seem to me to be a big plus vs. installed as an accessory but the prices have jumped a good bit. I've got a virtually brand new 2019 FX SVHO Cruiser and trying to decide whether to bite the bullet and upgrade to a 2023 where the GPS is built-in or to save a lot of money by just adding on to the 2019. Seems like on a PWC the more built-in the electronics the better relative to protection from the water but that's more based on motorcycle experience. I really enjoy the channel!

Great video Caption Frank. Quick story: I bought a FX SVHO Limited last month and the dealer mounted the transducer for the Garmin Skriker 4 (that came with the ski) on the transom to where it dragged about an inch below the waterline of the hull. I could only get about 63.5 mph top speed and they assured me that the transducer was not causing the slow speed. I finally decided to unhook the transducer and hook it to the lower strap ring. Immediately I got 68.5 miles an hour. I really wish they mounted it inside the hull like you did. Great job. Captain Frank you have a great radio voice. I'm wondering what you do for a living?

Hi and thanks for watching! I have done a lot more testing since I made the video and the UHD function does work but I don't think it is as clear as it would be if I had mounted it on the outside of the hull. This does not matter to me as I am really only interested in the navigational aspect and knowing the depth below me. Perfect UHD functionality may be more important for someone who is fishing from their unit. It is also possible that relocating to a part of the hull that is thinner may help too. Hope this helps.

After reading many of the comments about the performance of the Garmin and the transducer, my question is in regards to the heat produce in the engine compartment and has it had any affect on the 1) transducer, 2) the wiring, 3) the putty? I have looked at doing something similar to you with an eye geared towards fishing and wondering if it still reads beneath the ski to be reliable in finding fish. Thanks for having an informative and entertaining channel.
@TheShipsLogg
@TheShipsLogg 2 года назад
Absolutely no issues with heat except for the fact that it does not read the water temp accurately but that is expected. I do think the uhd capability is affected a little but that is not a problem for me because I am not fishing. I would give it a try to see if it does everything you need. You can always change the mounting method if you need to.

Everything has held up really well. The duct seal is still tacky but it is holding the transducer nice and tight. It is amazing how well everything has held given all of the bouncing around and all. The only thing that I have to do is claim the contacts for the back of the Garmin every once in a while. Even though they are supposedly watertight, a little corrosion still creeps in.

Hi Captain Frank and thanks for the video. I just purchased a 2024 FX Cruiser HO and want to install a chart plotter. Unfortunately, Boondocks is out of production for a few months so I have to wait until they make the mounts. How has the install held up? I saw a posting from someone that also used a Boondocks mount but his console developed cracks. Have you had a similar experience or seen anyone with a waverunner have problems with cracking? Thanks in advance and hope to see you on the water (I'm in Central Florida).

This video is such a great reference. Its nice seeing all of the questions, comments, and number of views. This particular crossbar mount simply bolts on without any modifications to the PWC. The mount adds strength, prevents rotation and creates device attachment points, but is not indestructible. I am aware of one person in the Chicago area with a GPS mounted on a left sided aluminum plate of mine (not a crossbar mount) on a 2019 FX. He liked to jump big waves on Lake Michigan. He ended up cracking the plastic on his dash after two years of use. I am also aware of another person in south Florida with a 2019 FX that bolted a large aluminum back splash over his Garmin and to the crossbar mount. He also had cracking. The aluminum backsplash was purchased out of NZ. I dont like those aluminum backsplash covers because they are heavy and they create a large surface for water to push against when a wave goes over the bow. Waverunners are often used in harsh marine environments. Some people like to "ride hard" and other people may find themselves in the middle of a fast developing weather storm. Making the mounting parts is just a hobby for me. I have a 2021 FX and I'm using my crossbar mount with a D RAM system up on the Great Lakes. Its wonderful. I am picky and only sell parts that I would use myself. They are rugged and strong. I would rather not sell a part then have somebody complain about cracking that was caused by dynamic forces against the thin dash plastic during use in inclement operating conditions. I would be interested in reading the post about the cracked console. Please send the post details my way when you have time, thanks.

Depending. On my yamaha 2022 FX there is a 12v charging port inside the glovebox. This port is ONLY powerer when the jet ski dash is activated by pushing the start button. Power is removed when the dash onnects system shuts down. Therefore I just tapped into the two wires going to the charging point and now i don't have to worry about turning the unit off manually every time I shut off the ski.

I'm confused....when you were testing it, were you just holding it against the hull with duct tape? Then came back and used the duct seal putty? I think yours hold bottom better than my ladder bracket mounted transducer on my 2017 FX HO. Mine will only hold up to about 50. Wanting to put a transducer on the insider of my 2007 VX110. Wonder if it will work?
@TheShipsLogg
@TheShipsLogg Год назад
I used duct tape initially because I wanted to be sure it worked before making it more permanent. One of the things I have learned from being around boats all my life is that transducers can be finicky. They are sensitive to where you place them whether it is a thru hull or transom mount. Variations in hull thickness or material can screw with their ability to give accurate readings. Too much turbulence in the water flow can do the same. Every boat (or jet ski) can be different as to where the best place is to place it.

Good questions. I try not to leave it on for long periods when the ski is not running so I don't drain the battery. The longest that I had it on without running the ski was two hours but the ski was on the trailer at the time and that was when I had first installed it and I was learning the system. The ski still started afterwards but there had been a voltage drop from about 12.6 to 12.3 volts. If I needed to have it on for long periods without running the engine, I would probably get a second battery. The only time I use a charger is when I am not using the ski regularly. Hope this helps.

Hi Captain Frank, I love watching your videos... I went back and forth between Garmin and Lorance and decided to follow your lead. My question is this, I have a 2008 FX sho and I tried the duck tape thing and it worked kinda but I lost the signal above 25 mph. I placed the transducer way in the back behind the battery box where there was a flat surface. I thought it was a great place especially at high speed thinking that this was the last place to loose contact with the water. My thoughts on that have changed and now Im thinking I should move the transducer to your same location.... Are you ever loosing your depth readings at high speed? Are you happy with the location? Would you change it and if so, where would you go with it... I love the choice I made with my Garmin 74cv unit. While I'm at it, hopfully others are reading this and can add to where they are placing their transducers in the yamaha FX hulls? BTW, loren at Boondocks PWC sent me a mount for the garmin and he was awesome to talk to!!!
@TheShipsLogg
@TheShipsLogg 10 месяцев назад
Yes, Loren is a great guy! There have only been a few times that I have lost contact with the bottom. It usually is at high speed in rough water. I think I lost contact because I spent a little too much time in the air as opposed to on the water. 🤣. With boats, you sometimes have to play with different locations due to hull thickness, cavitation and consistency in the hull material. Try a few different locations by duct taping it inside the hull to see which one is best. Once you have found the best one, then you can make it more permanent.

Hey. Congrats on the new machine. I did not have to use any special settings on my Garmin. Here are a couple of ideas. First, you do have to ensure that you have pressed the transducer down into the putty as much as you can to eliminate air pockets. Air pockets will cause the transducer to not be able to read the bottom. Second, you need to ensure that the connectors on the back of the unit are pushed all the way in. I have had a few occasions where mine has stopped reading and it was because the connector was slightly loose. Lastly, there is a difference between my machine and yours. My machine has a NanoExcel hull. For '22, Yamaha went back to fiberglass because there were some issues with NanoExcel. I don't think this should make a difference but it could, depending on how the glass is laid up. Hope this helps.

The best way to wire the GPS head is directly to the battery. No pre wire is needed. Franks set-up will give you the ability to power on/off the GPS independent of the Waverunner. Most Yamaha parts are on backorder and take several months+ to get. The aluminum crossbar mount is very strong, unlike the plastic Yamaha parts. Frank is using a 2.25" RAM system. Its quick and easy to use and very strong. Yamaha doesn't not sell a ball mount that will accommodate a bottle holder + a RAM ball base for a GoPro + a 2.25" ball. I enjoy my FX Waverunner enough to put nice parts on it. Unfortunately the Yamaha GPS and transducer parts are not impressive at all. This aluminum crossbar and camera ball mount are very high end and quite honestly the factory offered parts would be a huge step down in quality and function from what is shown in the video.
