Quickly making this for my sister who just got her GPS and needs to know how to use it before her trip tomorrow!
By the way, I also have a page I created partially for my sister - to help her understand what she needed to buy when buying her GPS:
www.berkshiresp...
GPS: www.amazon.com/...
City Navigator: www.amazon.com/...
Memory Card: www.amazon.com/...

Garmin used to let you buy their mapping products and use them on as many GPS units as you wanted. But I guess they decided the could sell more software if they changed it so you can only use the software on up to 2 GPS units. In order to download maps to your GPS, you must unlock the software - which involves installing the software, connecting your GPS and I you also have to be connected to the internet. I'm not sure what Garmin does, but does that kind of explain it for you?

The 60csx is still preferred by many over the newer 62 series. GizzMoVest makes a case now for the 60csx/60cx/60c. Quite a tribute to the 60 to make a NEW accessory for a model not in production :)

I have had my 60CSx for a couple of years now and still don't understand how to use it. Your video was very insightful but would love to find someone to give me lessons. I know this GPS can do what i want it to do but i just don't understand how to get it to do it. I ride horses/mules and would like to map where I have rode.

What a waste of time-- a misleading title- all about software-- not about the GPS!

Actually, yes I have used the area calculation function, but just to find the area contained within a loop I rode on my bike. I've wanted to do it on like an acre of land somewhere to see what it would calculate, but haven't done so yet.

Great video's Brad, not many video's on youtube explaining this particular unit in detail especially for it's age. What mount were you using in the car.

It comes with a useless basemap. You need to buy the maps. Not sure what is available for South America though and if you buy an inland lakes map, not sure if you'll get turn by turn street directions. Call Garmin and they'll tell you. You might have to wait on hold awhile, but they're very good at giving you advice once you get through.

The map isn't great. I haven't seen a Tom Tom, but I suspect the larger the screen, the better. I know two people who recently bought a Garmin Colorado and a Garmin Oregon. Both screens when in battery (not cigarette lighter) were VERY hard to read. And the guy who have the Oregon said it lost the signal under dense tree cover in the woods. The Colorado seems similar in reception to the 60CSX. more.. next comment...

I believe all Garmin handheld GPS's come without any mapping software. The basemap that comes with the unit doesn't do much for you. I made a web page with recommendations on which units have the highly sensitive SiRF chip and what you might want to buy with them. Click on the link in the description on the right. The Garmin eTrex series is smaller, lighter, but doesn't have nearly as many buttons so you have to do everything through menus, which is a pain (in my opinion).

You definitely "could" use your friend's City Navigator disk if #1 - he has only unlocked it on one GPS, and #2 - he doesn't mind you using his second unlock code.
@MTBIKEXC
@MTBIKEXC 13 лет назад
@kbckiwi Yes it does, but I am not sure it shows it for your whole distance. I think it's just for part.... And I almost think it starts over when you leave that screen and come back to it. I don't find it terribly useful.
@MTBIKEXC
@MTBIKEXC 15 лет назад
I've seen the Colorado (didn't like the scroll wheel thing) and the Oregon - screen seemed dark and you can accidentally press buttons on the touch screen if you have it in you pocket, but I'm thinking the Oregon would be next one, but I'm waiting to see if something better comes out. I bought a Nuvi 500 and it's really dumbed down as far as you can save tracklogs, don't think you can upload routes (but I might be wrong) and battery life of the Nuvi 500 is less than 5 or 6 hours.

I will be using one for Ultralight flying across the US. The price is right for the GPSMAP 60 but wasn't sure if I should pay the extra $100 and get the CSX. Do you think I would be able to see the maps better if they were in color? And also the 60 just has internal memory. Any advice? thanks.

@bradtube1 Nope, you don't need to buy any maps, Garmin GPS's support free mapsets as well! Just do a google search for "free gps maps"

Wow! Australia! That's pretty cool. That first cache is only 10,403.9 miles from my home coordinates. Doubt I'll be getting that one anytime soon! :-)
@MTBIKEXC
@MTBIKEXC 15 лет назад
This comes with just a weak basemap of the US so you're going to have to buy the detailed street maps if you want that kind of info and to store a large section of the US, you'll need lots of extra memory.

Both the Colorado and Oregon do paperless geocaching, which I'm dying to get. But... Garmin just came out with the Garmin NUVI 500 - which does paperless geocaching and which I suspect might have a better/bigger screen. I'm dying to see a video or meet someone with one to see if it gets as good reception as the 60CSX. But - that's what I'm considering for my next GPS. It's also pretty cheap compared to Colorado or Oregon.

At the present, is still Garmin map60CSx the best in prize and funcionality? someone know about a new model? I wanna buy one.
@MTBIKEXC
@MTBIKEXC 17 лет назад
Oh, this is also intersting... I thought I might be able to to help a very good friend of mine out so they wouldn't have to buy the software. So what I did was - I took their micro-SD memory card, put it in my GPS, downloaded maps to it, then took it out and put it in their GPS and it came right up and said it couldn't be used because the maps weren't unlocked or something like that. So anyway ... I don't like their BS, but the do make a very good GPS so I guess I have to put up with it.

I don't have this unit anymore, but I probably could help you. What exactly do you want to know how to do? I have an Oregon now, but the basics are pretty similar.

Can you do a route via airplane, where it just drives a straight line and ignore roads entirely? Looks like you have to just chose OFF ROAD all the time. These old GPS devices seem cumbersome to use compared to say WAZE on the Iphone or android, which kicks all of their asses and actually talks to you before every exit you have to take, and gets it right just about every time.
@MTBIKEXC
@MTBIKEXC 8 лет назад
I don't have this GPS anymore but most have a direct routing option from point A to point B. I agree with you on Waze - use it almost exclusively, however, up in the Adirondacks and Vermont I go to some pretty remote areas and when you loose cell phone coverage, your phone becomes pretty useless and I have had a few instances where I had to use my Garmin Oregon or Garmin Edge 810 for driving directions.

+TopShots Brad I wanted to go with an old gps device but I decided I need air nav maps so I think I'm going to have to go with Garmin Pilot app running on a Nexus 7. There is a homebrew ADB-S device project called Stratux which will plot real-time radar and other plane positions on your air map which would be handy for ultralight flying which needs no wind conditions. ADB-S though only works up in the air where it can see the towers for it. air-war.org
@justaguyx9161

Do I really have to explain this? Cellphones work locally on corporate cell towers, GPS works globally on military satellites. GPS is many times more reliable and accurate, and outdoor coverage is unmatched. Try getting WAZE to tell you where you are in the mountains or the ocean. An actual GPS like these is not for finding your way from your house to the mall. If you never leave the city, you're probably fine with your cellphone app, but then again, if you're so dumb that can't figure out where you are in a city where every street is labeled, not much can help you anyway. GPS is for navigating terrain and finding specific precise locations. "GPS" on a cellphone is NOT actually GPS, it is cellular triangulation. Real GPS is a million times better.

I don't get that you need a computer to help your GPS do all that. Doesn't the GPS have enough memory to hold the entire USA?
@MTBIKEXC
@MTBIKEXC 7 лет назад
It depends on the detail level of the maps. Street maps of the USA fit on the newer Garmins but topo maps don't so I have to load multiple topo maps onto a memory card, then swap 'em. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hRp7mCntg7w.html
