Garrick Watchmakers of Norfolk, UK was founded in 2014 by David Brailsford and Simon Michlmayer. Garrick watches are inspired by classical British watchmaking and the legacy of watchmaking greats such as John Arnold, Thomas Mudge, George Daniels, and Roger W. Smith. Hand-turned guilloche dials, sophisticated movement finish, and customization options are the hallmarks of Garrick luxury watches.
In this interview, Tim Mosso and David Brailsford discuss the challenges of starting a watch brand from scratch, promoting an independent watch brand, and developing original products. The first Garrick watch, the SM301 Shaftsbury, employed extensive customer components crafted by suppliers and customized to suit by Garrick's team.
Since that time, Garrick has undertaken the challenge of fabricating its own dials an movements by traditional means. AHCI watchmaker Andreas Strehler (UhrTeil) assisted in the design of the Garrick-exclusive caliber in the S1, S2, and S3 watches. Sophisticated fabrication and exhaustive regulation allow Garrick to guarantee daily accuracy of no worse than +3 seconds per day. Hand-finished components invite comparisons to brands such as RGM, Breguet, and even R.W. Smith himself.
Moreover, Brailsford is frank about watchmakers he admires and the sources of his inspiration. Aside from UK watchmaking icons Daniels and Smith, Brailsford's team admires American watchmakers Joshua Shapiro and David Walter, Tim and Bart Gronefeld of the Netherlands, Andreas Strehler, and Max Busser of MB&F.
Recently, the launch of the Garrick S4 has permitted Brailsford and his team to offer many of the brand's signature features at a significantly lower price point. Using a standard Garrick 42mm case and a heavily modified Unitas 6498, the S4 includes extensive dial guilloche, hand finishing, customization, and the company's accuracy guarantee in a watch priced at substantially less than $10,000 U.S. Despite the accessible price of the S4, Garrick intends to keep production limited to dozens rather than hundreds of watches per year.
Also a promoter of independent horology in general, Brailsford is the founder of The Watchmakers Club. This association of independent watchmakers is dedicated to popularizing independent horology and providing creators with a conduit to watch collectors.
