"Eve Monsees, I wouldn't be playing guitar, I wouldn't be playing music, if it weren't for her," Gary Clark Jr said when accepting his 2014 Grammy award for Best Traditional R&B Performance. It always starts with the blues. That's what lures you into the music, especially guitar. It's not in any beginner guitar book you'll ever read. But after learning your first chords, learn your pentatonic blues scales/major scales, then go relive the blues of history. It will surely make you a better player, trust me.

That's how it happened for me. Except it was my German friend Ben Kruse. First the bass then guitar. There's a period in history where; unless you live in certain areas in the country, black youth DO not pick up guitars. We lost interest because of the culture traps we fall into. Luckily I grew up playing piano. Eventually ended up in a band with a bunch of Zeppelin /Clutch heads.
