Thank you Gary Cohen and Howie Rose--certainly two of the purest and most eloquent Mets fans imaginable--for such heartfelt and moving remembrances. There's been such an uplifting outpouring of love and respect over the passing of this great athlete and fine man, even from the fans of rival teams. Lifelong Phillies, Reds, Dodgers, Pirates, and Yankees fans have all paid such wonderful tributes, let alone the many fond farewells by the Mets faithful. But that speaks to Seaver both on and off the field. He really was a kind of second coming of an earlier New York National League pitching great, Christy Mathewson of the New York Giants. Mathewson was a power right-hander with an arsenal of pitcher and a mind like a world-class chess player. Mathewson and Seaver pitched not only with their strength but also their wits. Both were upright, eloquent, the noblest opponent, the greatest teammate. Seaver was my boyhood idol. When, by 1976, my hapless Mets had Tom Terrific on the mound, we were still world-beaters, even when The Big Red Machine came to Shea. Thanks again, Gary and Howie, for capturing what it means to lose an icon and a hero, an integral, cherished piece of one's childhood.

Patrick Walsh -thanks for connecting Seaver and Mathewson. I always think like Seaver was the 'reincarnation ' of Christy Mathewson. Great similarities. Great NYC national league baseball.

I was not a Yankees fan. I wasn’t a fan of their broadcasters. Bobby Murcer was the exception. It was impossible not to what kind of man he from the way he handled the terrible illness that took his life. As for Seaver, the day the Mets traded him was the day the team’s management - especially the repulsive M. Donald Grant - ripped me to shreds.

Don’t put Seaver and murcer in same sentence. Bobby wasn’t in toms class

The Franchise indeed. Class while winning, first powering then thinking, all the while willing, his team and mine to victory. Showing his teammates and the world that no matter what anyone else thinks, it's on you. We Met fans may never have a better role model, on the field and off. And that's ok. #41 will stand for all time as the best of us.

After all the bum deals he was dealt from baseball teams and nature itself he remained a class act to the end. Tom Terrific, no doubt!

I remember the first ballgame my dad took my brother and me to at Shea. Seaver was pitching and it was the most exciting time I'd ever had up to that point. Now my father and my brother are gone, Shea is gone and now Tom's gone. However, the memories will always be there and that's what's important.

Gary Cohen, I was 8 when Seaver came up in '67. He was the reason I started to watch, play little league, and fall in love with the game of baseball. The best pitcher of my lifetime, hands down. Got to watch him pitch at least a dozen times at Shea, including his 1-hitter on 7/4/1972, when the Padres' Leron Lee broke up the no-hitter in the 9th with a routine single. The greatest. RIP.

Tom made pitching as an art and science! I won’t forget when he said “What’s so good at .500?” in May, 1969! He changed the attitude and culture of the Mets and so did then Manager, the late Gil Hodges!

Sad he's gone.....as a child he seemed like a Greek God....i remember flipping baseball cards hoping to win his card. I remember that 1974 Topps card with him in the action of finishing a pitch....when I eventually got that card, i was soooo elated and I just stared at the card forever as a young kid!!! RIP Thanks for the thrills

They really didn't. At that time, Henderson, Zachary, and Flynn were considered great prospects. They just didn't live up to their expectations.
@macdisciple
@macdisciple 3 года назад
There is always a measure of uncertainty when dealing for young talent. It really wasn't a terrible deal: Zachary was a co-Rookie of the Year, Henderson had star potential and put up some nice years, Flynn showed more as a Red but gave the Mets excellent middle IF defense. Norman was an intriguing prospect who could not make the last jump to the MLB level.
