Fine speech from the great Jimmy Stewart for the great Gary Cooper. I miss these actors... Fonda, Cagney, Astaire, Gable, Bogart, Wayne, Tracy, Peck, Lancaster, Flynn, Douglas, Grant, Mitchum, Robinson, Laughton, Olivier, Guinness. Maybe the finest generation of movie actors ever. Every real movie fan admires the work of these men. Nearly all of them are gone for a long time now, but we had DVDs and Blu-rays to watch their movies till the end of our lives.

While I would watch a movie by either of these two men, I have always preferred Jimmy Stewart's work because of his personal story of heroism as a pilot. It is described in depth in a book called "Mission." James Stewart never talked about his activities which led come to the rank of Brigadier General. You can see this in his interviews on the Johnny Carson show. When Jimmy Stewart finally settled down with Gloria, his wife, he took on her two sons, one of them died in action in Vietnam. He had an additional set of twin girls with Gloria. Jimmy Stewart flew B-52 missions without any fanfare during Vietnam because he believed they should be done without any notoriety. Gloria predeceased him and at some point in his life he told his cardiologist that he no longer wanted batteries in his pacemaker. That's how Jimmy Stewart went.

It's not true that Cooper was a man of few words. He could handle long passages of dialog very well. Just watch his testimony on the stand toward the end of "Mr. Deeds Goes To Town"; his explanation for not wanting to take up arms and then changing his mind in "Sargent York"; his 'luckiest man' speech at Yankee stadium in "Pride of the Yankees"; his courtroom speech in "The Fountainhead". There was a lot more to Coop than 'yup' and 'nope'.

In his book Made In Hollywood, journalist and part time actor James Bacon tells that he was outside Cooper's home with other news reporters when the actor"s death was imminent. He says Gary's dogs suddenly started to howl and Bacon took note of the precise minute in which that happened. About 30 minutes later a spokesman from the family announced that Cooper had died and when Bacon asked the demise time it coincided exactly with the moment the dogs howled, which reminded him of an Irish belief or superstition concerning the dogs knowing when their master's soul has abandoned his body. The following day he mentioned the dog's incident in his column and afterwards he received a call from an association of parapsychologists that found the coincidence to be a very interesting subject, worth of further studying.

@@Jude74 You can't tar them all with such a broad brush. Cooper certainly doesn't fit your description. Although he was a political conservative, and was somewhat sympathetic to the HUAC, appearing as a witness, he refused to name any names. And he defended blacklisted writer Carl Foreman, who later said that Cooper had been the only major star in Hollywood to try and help him. But yes, I think the Oscars and Hollywood stars were a bit classier then. Certainly there was scandal and scandalous behavior going on, and to a great extent Hollywood was just better at concealing it back then. But on the other hand, the Oscars weren't politicized like they are now, and there was genuine diversity of opinion in Hollywood, unlike now. There were liberals like Henry Fonda, Gregory Peck, Melvyn Douglas, Humprey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Spencer Tracy, Katherine Hepburn, et al.; and you had conservatives like Cooper himself, Jimmy Stewart, Clark Gable, John Wayne, Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, James Cagney, Bing Crosby, Joan Crawford, et al. And many of these actors and actresses maintained good, close, personal friendships despite their political disagreements. Jimmy Stewart and Henry Fonda are a good example -- the two were lifelong close friends, despite being polar opposites in their political views. Contrast that with today, when the entertainment industry has become utterly dominated by the left, and only conservatives who have already made it big dare reveal themselves as conservatives.
