This is the first part of a talk I gave on Aleister Crowley at London's Kensington Central Library on 15 March 2018. It's based on my book Aleister Crowley: Magick, Rock and Roll, and the Wickedest Man in the World. Camerawork courtesy of Anja Bjorlo.

Is this not the man who declared the best sacrifice was that of a young intelligent boy? If i recall this was in his book "Magik in Theory and Practice". Yes indeed he did, and I quote: "For the highest spiritual working one must accordingly choose that victim which contains the greatest and purest force. A male child of perfect innocence and high intelligence is the most satisfactory and suitable victim." wrote Crowley on the subject of the killing of a sacrificial victim in order to facilitate magik. He went on to expound: "Those magicians who object to the use of blood have endeavored to replace it with incense. ... But the bloody sacrifice, though more dangerous, is more efficacious; and for nearly all purposes human sacrifice is the best." For anyone to even consider this let alone advocate & publish it just shows what a twisted piece of crap they were and any further elucidation on this man is frivolous. He's proven to be a nasty piece of work who is most likely burning in hell as we speak and the only people to defend him (to the point of even denying he wrote what I just quoted above, even though he did write it very clearly in his book) are fellow satanists who themslves are comitted to covering the tracks of their murderous pedophile compadres. God help us that these kind of people roam this earth but they do and are responsible for the hundreds of thousands kids that go missing in the United States each year according to retired FBI chief Ted Gunderson. :\

BetheChange Me. Crowley was also one of the greatest trolls in history and apparently trolled you along with a bunch of Christian authoritarians. In Crowley's Magick in Theory and Practice, chapter 12, if I recall correctly, he sets up the passage you quoted by saying that it was a code for something else and must not be misunderstood. Then in the notes at the bottom of the page he adds that the "male child" is the magician's own sperm and that he has done this operation hundreds of times. It was a joke. If you were a researcher of Crowley you would know that he had a pet peeve about publishers being willing the publish the most vile violent statements but refuse to publish unorthodox sexual ones, even say , about masturbation ! That really is not a good reason to call Crowley a satanist or pedophile. There is no evidence that he ever abused any children or killed any.

What you say is completely untrue thenowchurch what was written was written in a serious and detailed manner followed up by even more detailed information on the practice of ritual sacrifice, information which directly corroborates, down to its finest details, high level witchcraft written about throughout all other publications on the matter throughout history. There was absolutely no mistake about his intentions and indepth knowledge of this vile practise. "Troll" my ass. Retired FBI Chief Ted Gunderson declared that there were millions of practicing satanists in the United States (many Crowely inspired) who were together responsible for the kidnap, torture, rape and murder of hundreds of thousands of kids each year in the United States. He was an excellent agent and a researcher with capabilities and connections beyond most peoples imagination. This is not a game thenowchurch, you act as if none of this going on when the reality is its become an epidemic throughout the highest most elite echelons of our society. Marina Abramovic, a high level practitioner of Thelemic magik and a self described adherer to Crowelys work has not only been rubbing shoulders with some of the most elite pedophiles and child traffickers in the world but is incredibly good friends with some of the worst of them. Turn back from the gates of hell because you think there is power to be got from wickedness well I'll tell you the only reward for involvement with this is an eternity in hell where a million million years will bring you no closer to the end of your torments than one short hour. Turn back!! Think 1000x more painful then anything you've experienced on earth, that is hell and its constant and forever and you are officially being warned and if you do not turn back and repent these words will forever be a testimony against you.

BetheChange Me. You have only proven that you are unwilling to let truth be paramount. You obviously have not studied that chapter of Book 4 and have next to no knowledge of Crowley's actual life and teachings. I have that book and many others by Crowley and he did many literary practical jokes, from time to time. He always wrote up his sex magick operations in his journals and he never recounts ever ritually sacrificing a child. Even his enemies at the time never accused him of that. If I were you I would be more aware of the commandment of God to not bear false witness on others. You are spreading slander without any evidence apart from an obviously encoded passage. Crowley was a qabalist and and as such was very much into codes and encryption and decryption. I agree that there is a widespread increase in pedophilia and corruption generally, just look at the Catholic church ! Circumstantial evidence and mere association based on people like Abramovich claiming to have once been into Crowley, does not prove that his teachings are responsible for the epidemic. You would have a lot more credibility if you really knew your subject and simply dealt with provable facts.
@bethechangeme2233

Are you saying that Crowley did not write this following excerpt in one of his books: "For the highest spiritual working one must accordingly choose that victim which contains the greatest and purest force. A male child of perfect innocence and high intelligence is the most satisfactory and suitable victim." Yes or No? Very simple answer, did he or didn't he, yes or no? I do not care how he then proceeded to veil the true intentions behind what he wrote in order to assume a position of plausible deniability because if he did not make even a slight attempt to cover his tracks he could very possibly have been arrested and tried for inciting such a horrific crime. The reality is those who understand black magik from a broader sense taking into consideration the subject as a whole Aleisters instruction just so happened to be identical to those recommendations made in an enormous amount of literature dealing with the dark arts. What Moron keeps a journal of the death penalty inducing crimes they have committed!? I'm not a Catholic so your insult means nothing, besides the instances of pedophilia are only marginally higher than society in general although I agree with you on the level of corruption which is a disgrace. You would however do well to take care of your own soul which, through your defense of such monsters and the horrors they have spawned, is on its way to a realm where a million years will be just the beginning of your torments. Why would you even risk this!? Turn back!! Read the tens of thousands of Near Death Experience reports and see for yourself, so many are being shown the realms of hell and they are beyond horrific!

BetheChange Me. It is you who should turn back from your empty headed following of opinion and persons who know not what they are talking about and do not have your interest at heart. I never denied that Crowley wrote those words. I even told you where exactly they could be found. He also wrote the following, in The Law is For All, page 51 "Such acts as rape and the assault or seduction of infants, may therefore be justly regarded as offences against the Law of Liberty, and repressed in the interests of that Law. It is also excluded from "as ye will" to compromise the liberty of another person indirectly, as by taking advantage of the ignorance or good faith of another person to expose that person to the constraint of sickness, poverty, social detriment, or childbearing, unless with the well informed and uninfluenced free will of that person". Did he write that ? Yes or no. It is a simple question. Do the Black Magic practitioners you claim have teachings so perfectly matched to Crowley's make that part of their regulations ? He also wrote, on the same page that the "male child of perfect innocence" is found in Magick Book 4, Chapter 12 page 207, "It is the sacrifice of oneself spiritually. And the intelligence and innocence of that male child are the perfect understanding of the Magician, his one aim, without lust of result. And male he must be, because what he sacrifices is not the material blood, but his creative power" He also says " The truly great Magician will be able to use his own blood, or that of a disciple, and that without sacrificing the physical life irrevocably" Let me repeat for clarity :" Not Material Blood." and "Without sacrificing the physical life" Got it ? You do not know what you are talking about.

For those who say Crowley's desire to commit the unpardonable sin was "tongue in cheek", I think it had more to do with that particular organ reaching some other part of the anatomy. He says it himself in his Confessions, the same place where he says for all to see that he "went over to Satan's side" after the death of his father. Those interested enough can read it for themselves. In pointing this out I am not saying that Crowley was a Satanist in the stereotypical sense - a la Anton Lavey - merely that remarks like these make things difficult for people who would like to avoid this particular association.

Mental illness takes many forms. I had an uncle who told me more than once that when he died he would bust hell wide open. He considered his numerous "sinful" actions SOOOooo over the top that hell would spit open upon his entry. I responded each time he made this statement to me by answering: "Nope, your just another guy who thinks he's done something uniquely sinful and abominable. The fact is that your just another human who has decided to live their life in a typically anti-social way". Crowley is the same, his anti-social behavior separated him from the common good of humanity.

So I read Gary's book revolutionaries of the soul and it's a really fantastic read, tho I was a little disappointed with the bit on Crowley. He claimed that a man died after drinking cat blood during a ritual when its quite common knowledge that the man drank dodgy spring water despite Crowleys prior warning. Also, if the man had've got ill after the ritual, he wasn't forced and surely had free will? There was another poorly researched part (I think regarding Crowley ill fated mountaineering incident) but apart from that I highly recommend the book. Top notch.
@GaryLachman
@GaryLachman 6 лет назад
Raoul Loveday did die after drinking the blood of a cat that had been slaughtered in a ritual. It is unclear if some infection in the blood made him ill, or if he became ill from drinking non-potable spring water. The rigors that AC put him through in order to find his "true will" also contributed to his weakened state. Did he have free will? Surely, but he was of the type of character AC liked to have around: intelligent but easily dominated. And what was the "other poorly researched part" you mentioned? The ill-fated attempt on Kangchenjunga? Crowley acted like a cad in that instance, refusing to come to the aid of fellow mountaineers who resented his ill-treatment of the sherpas. He heard their cries for help but ignored them, justifying his lack of action with the thought "serves them right." But I am glad that you enjoyed the rest of the book and thank you for the warm words.
@stevebb2915
@stevebb2915 6 лет назад
well firstly,thank you for replying, the book really is a sterling effort that i ripped through in two days. i don't mean in anyway to demean your efforts when i typed "poorly researched". I would love for you to do one on franz bardon, and the one you wrote on 'Imagination' is next on my wishlist (I'm hoping you go into einsteins views on imagination). OBV Crowley is very polarizing. I just have never found any material suggesting he left anyone to die or ignored cries for help (only that he warned them not to proceed with their course of action). What was the source (only if you care to share of course)? I think alan moore summed him up best "selfish and silly, but probably not evil".
@GaryLachman
@GaryLachman 6 лет назад
I agree that AC wasn't evil, just stupidly absorbed in himself and oblivious to the feelings or "true will" of others. I actually am fond of AC, as one is of a wayward child, but find him his own worst enemy. Indeed he is polarizing. Reports of his ignominious behaviour on Kangchenjunga were filed by the members of the expedition who survived. The circumstances surrounding Raoul Loveday's death came out in newspaper articles on the Abbey of Thelema at the time. I don't say AC was responsible for these deaths - although he himself claimed responsibility for the suicide of a woman who was in love with Victor Neuberg and whom he wanted out of the way. But as far as I can tell, it is a fundamental rule of mountaineering that if you hear a cry for help, you don't stay in your tent, justifying your spiteful behavior by saying "I warned them," which is what he did. AC really was a remarkable mountaineer, but he ruined his career because of this. But I'm glad you take enough interest to raise these points. Intelligent discussion about people like AC is what is wanted, not recriminations from one side or the other. And by the way, I do write about Einstein briefly in Lost Knowledge.
@stevebb2915
@stevebb2915 6 лет назад
I agree that the total lack of intelligent discussion is a problem 100%, particularly on the internet where people are hung drawn and quartered without a shred of evidence daily. Crowley seems to attract either cheerleaders or complete demonization (no pun intended lol), and his own habit of myth building hasn't helped anyone in that regard. It is worth considering that he was the centre of one of the first media smear campaigns, so i would be skeptical of considering the press a reliable source of info (either then or now). The whole 'free will' theme is for sure a great excuse to justify an absence of personal responsibility when dealing with others, and to some degree that is a recurring behavior of the immature spoilt brat type of character. I can imagine he was a total expert in self justification. Of course his ego was enormous. It seems that the magick without tears era is perhaps a time when he was a little more weathered and less egotistical, and the work benefits for it. Ultimately, we will never know. But Gary, please know we are grateful to you for your work, when i finished Revolutionaries I thought how I would love to read a follow up on modern figures like Alan Watts, Robert Anton Wilson, Krishnamurti, Osho, Tim Leary, Ram Dass, Terrence Mckenna...etc. Or maybe stuff on older mystics like Paracelsus, Rasputin....basically I want to be a rich publisher and commission books on subjects that interest me exclusively lol

theres a channel on here called Aleister Midnight and it comes and goes. one of the times it was on RU-vid I was reading comments on one of the scary videos that was on the channel and there were people talking about the person running the channel was a shadow person and others called him a demon and talked about how he would show up at their homes at night in their rooms. They would wake up and see a shadowy figure floating above them in bed and had red eyes and would disappear into their walls. 2 of the girls said they had to move from the home they had because they were terrified. One said she was in the bathroom brushing her teeth and something tapped her on the shoulder and when she turned around she saw him and backed up into the wall. From what I could gather whoever it is running the channel, he ask if anybody would like to be truely frightened. if you say yes he ask you one final time and if you say yes again then in 2 wks from then you had to go to a specific point on your property at exactly 3am and you would see him. what he didnt say was that after this you would continue seeing him except in tour home this time. One comment freaked even me out. a guy said that he would see the demon alot and that he would disguise himself as a crack on a wall above a doorway. he said he would notice that the crack would be in a diff position alot. He said he did some homework and found out that spirits (demons) would do this and wait for a person to walk through the doorway and the demon would drop down onto the person entering their the head and would tk over that person... he said he never walked directly under the crack. RU-vid is filled with idiots just trying to get people to think they're something they arent....but theres still a small percentage that are what they say they are and use the internet to find people. If anybody ever comes across this channel one of the times its up... if I were you I wouldnt say yes to being scared because you'll soon regret your decision...

There is evil, in the sense of suffering, that arises from stupidity and evil that is purposefully pursued. Hitler, lets say, is a good if cliched example of this kind of evil, or maybe Ted Bundy. Arrogance and ignorance and pride. People would rather love themselves and live for themselves rather then appreciate the god who created us and live as we were meant to. Instead people are selffish and think if they don’t believe in god that they are safe from punishment when this life is over. They are sadly mistaken as we are all going to pay for what we do and disrespect of god is huge

Kim B Crowley’s “fan boys” sure are bizarre about their need to defend every bit of his life. Seems like every modern occult historian is a hardcore Crowley promoter. Tobias Churton is a good example. Churton’s scholarly work on Rosicrucian history is hard to take seriously when most of his books and interviews are about his fascination with Crowley. I understand that he was smeared in the press, but I still think Crowley’s work is a bit dark for my liking. The really graphic stuff, that supposedly is code word for something entirely different, are not the things any spiritual teacher I would study might say. The fanaticism makes it even more difficult to weed out what the truth is, all the historians that cover him have a very obvious bias. I don’t mean to upset the hornets nest, just my personal opinion.

Very enlightening, informative presentation! It was very thought-provoking. 👍 Hmm... Is that why Oprah named her company Harpo? I immediately thought of Oprah when you mentioned Harpo. Here are some interesting tidbits about that: Ms. Winfrey’s production company, Harpo, is named after the Greek/Egyptian god Harpocrates. In occult literature Harpocrates arguably identifies with Baphomet or The Sabbatic Goat, also known as the Goat of Mendes. In Kenneth Grant’s Typhonian manifestation (or current) of the OTO (Ordo Templi Orientis), Harpocrates, the God of Silence, is associated with the child god Horus and his violent homo-erotic counterpart Set. The feminine aspect of Set is Typhon. The Egyptian god Set-Typhon, according to “retired” US Army psychological warfare expert (see his From Psyop to Mind War: the Psychology of Victory paper available online), former Church of Satan member and Temple of Set founder Lt. Col Michael Aquino, is the closest correspondence to the Hebrew Satan. ce399esoterica.wordpress.com/2010/08/01/backmasking-oprahharpo/ One of Crowley’s chief instances was that his followers learn and put into practice the Occult Law of Reversal. In the many various and sundry classes he instructed in his home in the occult, he invariably instructed his multitude of excited students in this major law of Satan. Those who want fame, power, spell-casting abilities, demons at their beck and call, and to recognize the godhead within, as well as to know the past, present, and future, he extolled to his apt students, must consistently, with intensity, practice talking (reverse speech), walking, thinking, and playing phonograph records, backwards. This is a form of divination, and we are warned against this in the Holy Bible. Let’s look at some Modern Examples of Law of Reversal: Oprah‘s studios is Harpo! Below you will see the same New Age, New Spirituality of Self-Awareness echoes all the way back to the original lie of the Serpent. Genesis 3 “ye shall be as gods…” Oprah’s Production company “Harpo” is “Oprah” spelled backward. Thus showing a secret following for the teachings (the law of reversal) of another occultist Aleister Crowley. amos37.com/lor/

He never had anything called the Law of Reversal. You are contradicting yourself when you claim that Harpo studios was named after the deity Harpocrates, then you claim that it was based on reversing Oprah. In reality, Oprah simply spelled her name backwards to name her studio. Simple. That is not evidence that she knows anything about Crowley or his teachings.

@GaryLachman
@GaryLachman 6 лет назад
The Illuminati isn't a Buddhist concept; the original Illuminati were an offshoot of 18th century Freemasonry, and were crushed in 1784 when the Bavarian government outlawed secret societies. The Mahatmas came into the picture with Madame Blavatsky. The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, of which Crowley was briefly a member, spoke of Secret Chiefs, their equivalent of the Mahatmas, although the idea of "secret chiefs" or "unknown superiors" also goes back to Freemasonry. In the talk I am making a joke about the proliferation of fashionable Illuminati wanna-bes among many celebrities. In the end, though, Crowley was an Illuminaughty more than anything else.

You seem to think that Crowley was an impulsive Brat, I see no evidence for this from anything I have seen from Crowley's writings or the excellent biographies by Tobias Churton and Richard Kaczynski, he could be impulsive and we can all think of quotes to back that up, but Crowley was immensely complex and very disciplined when needed, like when walking across the Sahara desert, with Victor Neuberg or mountain climbing etc etc. Crowley was in fact one of the hardest working people of his age with a puritanical work ethic. I didn't really understand what you said about Crowley and meditation, you seemed to say that Crowley couldn't sit still or still his mind. Crowley in fact attained to profound states of consciousness in meditation, his 8 lectures on Yoga are a classic. Crowley was very self disciplined and a lot of what he was about was trying to master the mind. He did employ a mental exercise where he thought about a shape, and then tried to hold the thought for as long as possible, a perfectly reasonable exercise to develop concentration, but he also practised classical Yogic meditation. A lot of people who criticise Crowley don't seem to realise that Crowley actually had a wacky sense of humour and wasn't above taking the piss out of himself. In the Book of Thoth when Crowley describes the character of the Prince of Wands (who predominates in Leo and Leo was his rising sign) he is really describing himself. ''He is often violent, especially in the expression of an opinion, but he does not necessarily hold the opinion about which he is so emphatic. He states a vigorous proposition for the sake of stating it''. ''He may be an extravagant boaster, while slyly laughing both at the object of his boast and at himself for making it. He is romantic, especially in matters of history and tradition, to the point of folly, and may engineer “stunts” or play elaborate practical jokes. He might select some inoffensive nobody, and pursue him for years with every weapon of ridicule) as Swift tormented the unhappy Partridge, all without the least animus, ready to give the shirt off his back, should his victim be in need''. ''His sense of humour is omnivorous, and may make him a mysterious figure, dreaded without reason by people who actually know nothing about him but his name-as a symbol of Terror. This is due to the influence of the last decan of Cancer upon this card. One of his greatest faults is pride; meanness and pettiness of any kind he holds in infinite scorn. His courage is fanatically strong, and his endurance indefatigable. He is always fighting against odds, and always wins in the long-the very long-run. This is principally due to his enormous capacity for work, which he exercises for its own sake, “without lust of result”; perhaps his haughty contempt for the world at large-which however coexists with profound and ecstatic respect for “every man and every woman” as “a star”-is responsible for this'' - The Prince of Wands. Liber 78. I don't think Crowley was about doing forbidden things for the sake of doing forbidden things, like a kid . I think he wanted to conquer the Christian traits in himself and restrictions due to his upbringing and the the age he lived in. Actually Crowley in many ways had a strong conservative streak . Also he believed in pushing himself beyond the limits, whether physically or mentally or spiritually; this could be seen as ''doing the forbidden'' when he was trying to achieve self mastery. Of course he was a contradictory character to be sure. I think your presentation of Crowley's choice of the spiritual/occult life being based on a wish to gain fame and historical significance is the worst mischaracterisation of all. Crowley's spiritual quest was deeply sincere. Crowley was not responsible for the break up of The Golden Dawn, check your facts.
@GaryLachman
@GaryLachman 6 лет назад
Well, there are hagiographies and then there's my book. Crowley was an often brilliant, very creative character who nevertheless was his own worst enemy - and that of most of the people in his orbit. I suspect people of a certain level of maturity find him "liberating." Others, perhaps a bit more grown up, weary rather quickly of the crowned and conquering child. Never dull where Crowley is. Yes, more's the pity. But it's a big universe...
@lordrockman7431

I'm an old geezer I don't appreciate the '' I suspect people of a certain level of maturity find him "liberating." . or ''Others, perhaps a bit more grown up'',. Crowley may or may not have been his own worst enemy it depends which sources you go to. I was studying Crowley before you were born. Perhaps you need to get off your high horse. Crowley had a wacky sense of humour and didn't always realise that people didn't always get the Joke. Furthermore a lot of Crowley's antics are often interpreted as Crowley being a wind bag or egotist or Joker but often have a deeper meaning that's missed by the biographers and you. Wherever he went he always headed for the British consulate and was on first name terms with the consulate staff. What was he doing in Russia, China, India, Weimar Germany or Mexico, there's a story there that's not been told.There’s good reason to see Crowley at the very least as an intelligence asset. Crowley arrives in Mexico as Chevalier Isidore Achilles O'rourke, this is often interpreted as Crowley being a crackpot joker, however it is a name that has significance to the Carlist cause. He was there for months before he meant Ecktenstein. He was on some kind of mission, I believe to do with the Carlist cause. Whether or not Crowley ever really supported the Carlist cause or was simply spying, we don’t know. Your crude misrepresentation of Crowley, ‘’pretending’’ to be a Russia, fails see the intrigue going on at the time and the people he met and associated with. Isidore Achilles O'rourke , the initials of which are IAO. Check out 47:5 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-R-a2xReALmA.html Your not kidding, there are biographies and then there's your book. Think I’ll stick with Richard Kaczynski and Tobias Churton, for facts and scholarship.
