@@TMthe33rd Barca has had more English managers than any other nationality other than Spanish in its whole history. The Premiership (and BundesLiga) at one point were the richest leagues. Add to that certain rules, wasnt a lot of incentive for English players to go to Europe for a long time... (Its only relatively recently that two Spanish clubs (Barca and RM) got in to crazy rich club status.) Top 10 richest is still majority English clubs. Lineker was recruited by Venables, the English Barca manager at the time and followed him to Everton after. You make it sound like football recruitment, especially for a Spanish club in the 80s and 90s, sound like a matter of picking talents... or the type of 'cost no object' that Barca can afford today.

He was deadly for the clubs he represented and his country. At international level his goalscoring record is superb he generally played in an era of fearsome man marking and tackling from behind. In any any era a great goalscorer.

People underrate Lineker because of the whole TV personality, Walkers crisps thing but he was a phenomenal scorer of goals in his day. He could do it at any level and in any team. Better than Shearer in my book.

Great video. Really surprises me that Lineker isn't talked of more highly as a top player. Good goals to game ratio especially internationally and performed on the biggest stages

Philip Mahon agree. I think its because he's english and a technical player as opposed to a physical player that the english seem to be besotted by. Same reason they never hyped up scholes, was only until all the barca boys started saying he was there hero that the media perked up

Daniel Hackett he has more or less a 1 goal in 2 game ratio. Scored hatricks for Barcelona and 10 world cup goals and doesn't get the plaudits I think he should. If you look at this video clearly more varied a footballer then a tap in merchant. Top player

Philip Mahon agree with you. The english thouvh are still besotted by barnes gascoigne and shearer when they talk of there greatest players.. why? Because they were physical types. Players like beardsley , waddle, lineker get forgotten. Just about every player thats played with beardsley puts him in there best 11 but media never talk of him

His ball control is insane. Check out 2:26, even with a defender on him still manages to chest, direct the ball forward then smash it with his weak foot. wow!

The most beautifull thing in his career, never sent off! Also great striker. Im a fan of Tottenham because of Gascoigne, Chris Waddle, Glenn Hoddle and Lineker. In those days they show premier league and FA Cup in portuguese TV. That one @2:55 was fantastic, chest control and volley across his body. This compilation shows a LOT of really good finishes from Lineker, the vast majority of which I'd never seen until now. I was a couple of years too young to be interested enough to watch a lot of football before he retired in the early 1990s (I remember borrowing his book for young strikers from the library though, when I was about ten), and thought I had seen his best goals in retrospect, but this video surprised me. I suppose it is easy to categorise him in my memory as a great goal poacher, the six yard box dweller, but he was technically gifted and atheltic, and could score from anywhere in the penalty area.

Lineker is my favourite striker .In 1986 I was standing for Argentina but I felt sad for Lineker when England lost the match.In WC 1990 England and Lineker desserved to win the WC,England was much better than Germany in semi finale.Anyway he stays as the best striker of WC 86 and remembered as one of the best strikers of the history.Respect Sir Lineker overall he is a great guy and a real gentleman.

He is not remembered as a fast player but few defenders are able to catch up with him pursuing a long pass. No weak foot. Great header. Great timing when shooting, never takes an extra second. World class control skills. Not only he stops the ball, but he always clears it away of defenders in the best position to shoot on goal without opposition.

Always loved his trademark finishes - especially the ones with the chest or thigh control, where he'd then let the ball fall across his body, bounce once, and then volley it back across goal, The keeper and defenders get dragged across too far toward the near post - it seemed to work every time.

His goal highlight reel isn't exactly full of the most amazing to watch goals, he didn't really score a ton of WOW goals. But what's remarkable about him is how he was able to consistently be that fox in the box getting goals in a VERY physical era of football despite not being very big and physical. He wasn't in there bullying people out of way so he could get his head on it, he was just insanely clever.

Gary was a phenomenon. Like Rush , even a scent of a chance, cud score. Lineker was brilliant at gambling when to run and 9/10 times his run was perfect, instinct.

My favourite forward growin up. I remember buying quaser boots cos he wore them. He was so clinical in front of goal, and used to stroke the ball low so the keeper had to get down to it. He should have won more and should have beat Charltons record. Amazing finisher

Ruthlessly efficient in the box, more than a tap-in merchant, but there's very little to make your jaw drop. Made England look better than they actually were, so there's that.

He was also decent outside the box. I remember him having an absolute stormer against tbe germans in the SF of the World Cup in Italy 90. Also the sheer volume of his goals makes him world class. He always scored. Not sure if he made England look better. They had gascoigne, hoddle, waddle, barnes …

@@tristanburke350 His goals made England seem better in the eyes of the media by turning loses into draws and draws into victories. He was often the difference. Agreed he didn't stand out as a flair player among the likes of Barnes, Waddle and Gascoigne. Definitely a 'talisman' player.

2:55 is getting a lot of attention on this comments thread, but 3:05 is actually more technically difficult. To use the outside of your left foot to caress the ball down and under control (with your back to the ball) while maintaining momentum toward goal, followed by that finish... spectacular.
