Saw a an old Rolling Stone magazine with their top 100 guitarists choices. Nowhere was Gary Moore on the list. I never picked up another Rolling Stone in my life. Never will. He was a classic. Awesome talent.
Anyone saying Gary Moore was underrated is way behind the curve . Gary’s brilliance had been recognised throughout the UK and Europe since the 70’s. For me , Belfast born Gary was simply the greatest guitarist the British Isles ever produced . Not only was he capable of blowing most guitar players off stage , but played with such feel and emotion, that few of his contemporaries could master or come close to. Gary may not have had long blond hair, a cute smile, and a California tan, but I wouldn’t have liked to have been the guitarist who dared share a stage with him . R.I.P to the master .
"When I'm in England, I say, I'm from Ireland. When I'm in Ireland, I say, I'm from Dublin. When I'm in Dublin, I say, I'm from Crumlin. When I'm in Crumlin, I say, Leighlin Road. When I'm in Leighlin Road, I say, I'm a Lynott."
Anything Gary Moore did, was always pretty amazing, but when you add the GREATNESS of Phil Lynott, then you're talking about something truly special! And of course the great Brian Downey on drums!!! LONG LIVE THIN LIZZY!!!!!!!!!!!! GOD BLESS GARY MOORE'S FAMILY, HIS MEMORY WILL LIVE ON IN THE MUSIC FOREVER!!
Slow, fast, it doesn't matter; just a brilliant song, turned two ways by a master, in full respect of his friend that created it in the first place. I'll never tire of listening to this.
Simply one of the greatest and at the same time most underrated guitar players ever. Just nails every song at this concert. So wish I’d been there in person
I had the privilege of seeing Gary Moore play a local pub with Skid Row when he was about 17. Even then you could see how very special he was. At the Fender Strat 50th anniversary concert Hank Marvin played, David Gilmour played, but Gary (not normally associated to the strat) stepped out with an old battered strat and he made the bastard sing. Albert Lee had to follow him and was clearly NOT pleased. There will never be another...
Gary Moore has always been one of my guitar heroes not many outside of Europe or the rock world heard of him and I know that we've all heard of Beck Page and Clapton but you can't count out Gary Moore either. This man was a guitar genius RIP brother.
Oh My God.... that is exceptional - both slow & fast versions! The world is a sorrier place without such a talent. Must have been a real pleasure to be at that concert. As a tribute to the legend that was Thin Lizzy - this is legendary in its' own right... fantastic
Best version of this song ever!! The guitar solo sends chills up my spine every time I hear it as do all of his solos. Shred guitarists just leave me cold. They hit so many notes that mean nothing. Gary was the real deal and will never be forgotten.
I seldom comment: I hear Gary Moore lead guitar in my sleep and in my dreams and this is a very good/ exceptionally good version! However; I do hear Phil Lynott vocals and Scott Gorham dueling leads even though they are not in this... absolutely incredible that Gary can pull it off nearly solo:-)
Simply put, The best stuff ever, seen Gary in the 80's in The City by the bay at a club that burned down soon after. Shredding at it's best with such feeling. Also this man could rock with the best of them. His first few solo albums before he found his bluesy roots again were incredible.
Utterly awesome version of a classic track. Didn’t think he could better the OGWT version from 79 with Phil, think he’s done it here. RIP Gary and Phil
Gary moore was really a great guitar hero. saw him once "wild frontier" tour, 86/87....he dont miss a note, it's like he has the magic touch: perfect solos...man, incredible
Thin Lizzy One of the best rock bands of all time, in my humble opinion Saw them several times - what an absolute charismatic genius Phil was and the band members also instrumental geniuses Proud of my Irishness!
Gary is one of the few who’s tone is instantly recognized the others are SRV and Rory Gallagher imagine being a fly on the wall if they all had a session together
No matter how many times I hear this version I can't wait to grab a guitar and dream a bit. He's one of the most exact guitarists but maintains a feel throughout that just makes you wanna jump. True musicianship. Thank you for sharing this epic video.
I have three guitarist in my 65 years of listening and a couple of years of playing that i rate above everybody else: Robin Trower, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Gary Moore! In no certain order... but I do like playing Gibsons.:)
The set up he had that night was unbelievable. Brilliant sustain and tone. The les Paul he's playing in this video sounds better than the others in this show. I know its not a competition but Gary blows the others out of the water at this show. They are all legends but Gary is top of the tree.
Agreed on Gary being top of the tree, without question. However, if John Sykes had been there to do something, it would've been interesting. Sykes is the only other Thin Lizzy guitarist with the chops, speed and power to be capable of competing with Gary in a guitar duel!
Gary and Sykes definitely some of the best of British guitarists ever, love them both to death. I'd add Holdsworth, and maybe Guthrie, but he needs some more years. And yeah you can add Jeff Beck and Mclaughlin too. Throw in some Blackmore , Steve Howe and Steve Hackett and I'd be a happy camper.
The tone here especially when he engages the ultra gain channel on the DSL is fucking out of this world. I have a DSL and it doesn't sound as good as this!
Six Strings seriously, nobody mentions Knopfler? One of the best out there. Like Moore, he can play slow melodic phrases as well as shred like there is no tomorrow.
We have Robbo to thank for the faster version. He speeded it up when Phil went AWOL from rehearsals one time. Before that it was just a slow blues. As such that song would never have been a hit. Robbo changed the feel of it completely and it was a classic. He never got a writing credit for that, which he should have done but he was young and naieve at the time. That's one of the reasons why his relationship with Phil was never all love and roses and why he has so little to do with Lizzy these days. Sad but that's people for you. As a song I love both versions but the hit version has everything in 2.5 minutes. Amazing.
Musicianship is so "heart-pumping" to hear, the guitar playing is legendary, very skilled & talented...Rocking Fun Sounds... What an impressive gift of guitar playing to experience!! Thin Lizzy one of the best in Irish rock🎸!🎶!🎸
R.I.P. Gary Moore - an amazing and very talented guitarist who brings/brought this brilliant Thin Lizzy song back to life without Philo on bass or on vocals - job very well done! Well, where you are now, I'm sure Philo's back on bass and vocals, so you can concentrate on that blistering guitar work of yours.
The drummer is Brian Downey drummer and a founding member of Thin Lizzy. The Bass played is Jonathan Noyce He is primarily known as a member of British rock group Jethro Tull, with whom he toured and recorded as a member from 1995 until 2007.....☮ ♥ ♫
