IMHO this is the greatest guitar performance ever recorded by the greatest guitar player that ever lived. And I've seen Henrix live as well as Jeff Beck and many, many other greats. I've been a musician for over 55 years and this is the most astounding performance I've ever seen.
Gary Moore was simply amongst the best of the best and yet, never received the recognition he deserved ( accept from those who had the pleasure of knowing his guitar work) UNMATCHED in my opinion
My God....have you ever heard a guitar cry, sing and scream like that? There's a reason I have a signed guitar and album of his right above my head on the wall as I type. God Bless Gary Moore...and God rest his soul!
Don't feel bad about not knowing who Gary Moore was. he was never given the acclaim he deserved. He was much more than "oh, didn't he play in Thin Lizzy" Anyone who has listened to him play This song or The loner, or Empty Rooms, Parisiene Walkways, Still got the Blues, knows.... No one, now or ever, played the electric guitar with the emotional sense of melody that he did. He is far and away, my favorite guitarist and in my mind, the greatest ever. From the heart, to the hands, to the strings and out the amp he is untouchable. we'll not see his like again....
Shame he didn’t get the recognition he deserved while he was alive. I notice now he has passed that guitar magazines have covered his work more than ever. Too little to late unfortunately.
I am a 74-year-old Black Man who grew up with Gary Moore, since his early days with Skid Row, Thin Lizzy, a must is Black Rose, where he does a Metal version of Danny Boy. Please check out the album Wild Frontier, he does Irish-Celtic Metal. Also check Out in the Fields Fields, with another Irish legend Phil Lynott, who was a Black Irishman. Must listen to more types of music. Blues, Classical, Flamenco, Rock/Hard Rock/Heavy Metal, Jazz, and Reggae. Check out the jazz performer the late Clark Terry, flugelhorn.
Just to be uber-nerdy. That guitar he is playing is pretty damn famous too. It is a 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard 'burst. It is called "Greeny" that started out belonging to Peter Green, the co-founder of Fleetwood Mac, before Gary got it. The guitar now belongs to Kirk Hammett of Metallica who still uses it on stage occasionally. He reputedly paid $2 million for it.
Back when I was 17 (1974) I was in Gary's father's house. He said his son was 'doing quite well playing guitar in London'....the understatement of the 20th century lol.
"God, that man can play... That's all I got" - Most succinct, concise, no-nonsense, straight-to-the-point reaction comment ever made 🙂👍 Thanks for a great review
You are so right!! I have listened to this recording at least 100 times over the years, and it is THE masterpiece I would take with me, if I had only one song to take with me to the "desert island." It's fantastic to watch your reactions -- thank you for sharing this!
My brother. Welcome to the fold. Look up "Still Got The Blues" and "Parisienne Walkways". Greatest Irish bluesman ever, along with Mr. Rory Gallagher. It really warms my heart to see young guns so taken back with his music. Soul power lives on.
i know Im asking the wrong place but does anybody know a tool to get back into an Instagram account?? I was stupid forgot my account password. I would love any help you can offer me!
@Imran Leonidas thanks for your reply. I found the site thru google and Im trying it out atm. Takes a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Neither Clapton, nor Hendrix, nor Page could do what Gary Moore does here. That is simply a fact. That doesn't mean you have to like Moore as much you might like those other guitarists. But be honest, this is technically on another level. Could SRV do it? I don't know, but I have no reason to just assume he could and I have listened to a great deal of SRV and I am a knowledgeable guitarist with decades of experience. I know what's involved in playing like this. There are guitar fans who have emotional attachments to certain guitar players and it blinds them to certain realities. I am not trying to tell anyone who their favorite guitarists should be, but to say that Moore might be up on the same level as Clapton, Hendrix, Page and SRV is ludicrous. It's laughable, because the real question is: Are they on his level?
Absolutely nailed it! I too, have played for over 20 years. I don't think Clapton, Hendrix, Page, Beck, SRV or any of the other top rated blues rock guitarists we're on par with Gary. He was simply more well rounded and didn't comform to what others adhered to. He didn't get all the recognition he deserved because he didn't sell out, and pretty much did it his own way. We are all blessed because of it too. He left us with some of the best stuff that will ever be recorded.
His stunning remake of the Roy Buchanan classic instrumental. Roy was slippy great but Gary was a perfectionist who played with feeling. Fast or slow, soft or loud. You just witnessed one of the greatest electric guitar players ever. RIP
That song was written by Roy Buchanan just so you know. Gary Moore and Jeff Beck (among others) were huge fans of his. You should hear Roy's version (since it's his song)...though I absolutely love what Gary did with it. Roy would have been proud :)
You have to check out the video of Gary Moore doing Separate Ways Live in London 1992. You'll love his jazz influence on this song and his crazy intro.
Gary Moore Hurricane live with Ian Paice and Don Airey or Desperado with Colosseum II. These two the best video you can react to from Gary ... He played fusion jazz rock and hard rock before the blues times and was even more interesting.
Ive been playing for well over 40 years and listened to Gary as far back as skid row. This is a master class on vibrato control, use and how to make a guitar actually be your voice
Your a great reactor. It helps when you have musical background. I’m 73 yrs old and been listening to the blues for years. Gary Moore is one of the best.
He didn't need to sing. He did all that with the guitar! He sings on "Still got the blues", but didn't really need to. He sang with his guitar on that one too! Give it a listen!
It was the first of May 1990 in my city of Gothenburg in Sweden at the Concert Hall venue. On stage Gary Moore and his band with special guest Albert Collins. He did several encores and this was the last song he did. Man the way he played it with lots of improvisation still gives me the chills even today!!
This song was originally composed by Roy Buchanan. One of the greatest guitarists of his generation. Gary was paying him tribute at such a higher level here. Here's a link to Roy playing the song live at the Paramount Theater in Austin TX in 1976. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-deeBQZ8Aklc.html
@@dannymoore6886 Yes he was truly a great guitar player and highly under rated. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe he was offered the rythm guitar position for the Stones that ron Wood ended up filling and he was also offered the rythm guitar/second lead position for Santana that was filled by Neal Schon of Journey. But he turned them both down. I was lucky enough to see him play a couple of times before he died. The last time was about a month before he died.
I just read an article from Rolling Stone magazine listing the 100 Greatest Guitarists, and Gary Moore wasn't even on the list!!! :-O The author should be slapped! (BTW, neither was Terry Kath of Chicago, so the author should be slapped twice.)
I am so happy that there are still people like you around. People who are prepared to listen to some amazing artists and give them the respect and appreciation that they deserve. You also deserve respect and appreciation for taking this as it is and seeing just how special all of these artists are and were. Applause to you sir!
You reacted how I did when I first heard Gary Moore play...I mumbled a lot, and ended just shaking my head saying nothing. As great a musician as Gary Moore was, it’s gotta be said that if you have a problem with drink or drug, it’s ok for you to get treatment, in fact you’ll be glad you did.
What a great reaction to the greatest guitar Blues player I've ever hear. The emotion was off the charts. Thanks for the post and even better thanks for the amazing reaction.
Gary was in many bands in his career, thin lizzy is one. He played every possible kind of music in these bands. You could truly see his heavy metal days pop in and out in this. In my opinion without a doubt his best was Still got the blues. There is awesome vocals and that same emotional guitar
Gary Moore Irish guitarist and songwriter played with Skid Row and Thin Lizzy. Notable songs Parisienne Walkways which he Co-wrote with Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy, Still Got the Blues with excellent vocals solo , or try earlier Gary Moore Gary Moore 1987 Over The Hills and Far away which is a little different.
Gary Moore was an amazing talent, never got the credit he deserved as a guitar god. Roy Buchanan wrote this song and played it amazing. Gary gave a nod to him when he put it on his set list. They are vastly different players very unique in there styles; however Gary stays fairly traditional to Roy's original probably because it kicks ass. Roy was a monster player, died in lock-up down south after partying...they say it was suicide but I think someone killed him maybe because he was liberal with his choice of musicians in his band if ya know what I mean. They're both gone...bummer...I'm old. lol
By the way, this is a cover of a song by guitarist Roy Buchanan. A damn good cover. RIP Gary Moore. You should check out some Steve Vai now. Listen to and watch Tender Surrender by him
Dude, I've been a GM fan since the late 80's during his hard rock days. Go tonearly 2000's and his cover of Hendrix cover of Red House. It will blow your mind. Him and SRV are at the top! BTW SRV lived 15 minutes away from me in Dallas so I KNOW great guitar! Trust me.
Hard to believe he's been gone so long...seems like yesterday.....Gary is one of the best could be the best...it's all on content...but skills...don't know anyone more skilled.
Richie Blackmore, Rory Gallagher, Gary Moore, and Joe Bonamassa. What more can one say. Although Gary covered this Roy Buchanan (he was no slouch either), awesome tune, Gary made it his own. I saw Gary many times, even when he had a stint in BBM Bruce,Baker, and Moore. Whether he played rock or blues or whatever he played, Gary's playing always gave me goosebumbs. R.I.P. Gary and Rory.
This is a great version of a Roy Buchanan song. Roy Buchanan turned down the Rolling Stones when they asked him to join. That's why Ron Woods is in the band. Check out some of Roy's stuff.
My personal struggle was, is it Eddie Van Halen or Stevie Ray Van. Now I am more confused than ever. I know Gary Moore, Ive heard Gary Moore, but this was...
What Up WB, love Gary, but Roy Buchanan is my all time favorite guitarist, and been listening to him for over 40 years, this is Roy's song, and he does it live on Austin City Limits, check out FIVE STRING BLUES also.
God said. ‘ I am so sorry Gary, that when I made humans I made you so terribly ugly., In return I will give you this talent’ So don’t ask why Gary could do this!
BROTHER...... GARY IS ONE OF MY FAV GUITAR PLAYERS........BUT YOU HAVE TO SEE THE GUY THAT WROTE IT PLAY IT ON HIS GUITAR .....HIS NAME WAS ROY BUCHANAN......I DARE YOU TO PULL IT UP AND PLAY IT.......C'MON NOW......THIS IS A REQUEST.....
