May 24th 1979, I was fifteen years old, watching Top of the Pops and everything changed. Tubeway Army's performance of "Are friends electric?" was nothing like I'd ever seen or heard before. I was mesmerised. I bet that I didn't blink once.
I can't get enough of this. All the other guys in the band are such dudes, lol....& then there's Gary Numan. He's spellbinding, so comfortable in his strangeness. A beautiful alien.
Living Ornaments limited edition records? I am italian, I think I read on a music magazine of that time the record master was going to be destroyied after a short time. But it looks it never happened...
Was 13 years of age when the song came out. I am now a young 55! lol Just now hearing this song for the first time, and absolutely love it. Going to use this song in my rock and roll Pepper Video update! Hell yeah! lol Join Pepper Freaks!
I hate to ask BUT ARE FRIENDS ⚡️ ELECTRIC’….. oh please take me back to 1979.. I heard this song 🎶 and I was 13, I was like who us this gorgeous man? Did all the research.. and over 40 years later , still a huge Gary Numan fan!!!! Yes we all know things in life change, but Gary’s style of music has changed, and SAVAGE and INTRUDER are amazing!! Gary still has it!! Totally amazing!! I am seeing Gary Numan on March 11, 2022…The Intruder Tour… in Toronto , 🇨🇦 Canada.. May our Lord and Saviour bless Gary and his beautiful family!! R.I.P. Paul Gardiner & Cedric Sharpley…taken from this world to soon, but never forgotten … Take care everyone!! Luv LA .. Gary Numan is pure gold…📀🎶🎹
Strange how things go. I was a Kraftwerk fan and the videoclip was also broadcasted here in Italy. So to me was not a whole new thing but I was fascinated at once. It was the third record of my life. Only sooo later I found out it was so important for the future pop electronic music. I feel myself as one guy in the beginning of the '60s listening to the Beatles at the radio and thinking: "Oh, these guys are cool indeed!!"😄
Nah... his best song is Thats Too Bad. But i like the compilation CD "the plan"... and, mmmm... i think i Still got this lp somewhere in this house after all these years
When I heard this for the first time I was like a sleeping dog who pricked up his ears and woke up with a wagging tail. No denim flares. No double-neck guitars. No silly collars. No pretentiousness. Just a show of electronic defiance that would piss off everyone from classical music snobs to "punk rockers" LOL! Almost everyone who claimed to have "taste" in music at that time hated Gary Numan. And what was to come later (John Foxx, Human League) would render them hyperventilating.
On this day, May 24, 1979, music changed forever. This hit No. 1 in UK and caught everyone - the masses and musicians in seminal electronics bands - unaware. Where the hell did he come from?
im 44 at some point I gave up on new music or newer music,didnt like the sound of it! so I went backwards, : ) I grew up a rock/metal kid in bands,then when I wasn't in bands and older,I got into,Joy Division,the Cure,the Clash,The Smiths,Numan,Depeche,the Jam,and so on : )
I can connect myself to all these lyrics. I live a lonely life. I could probably ask if friends were electric myself, since the closest people i know as friends are on minecraft servers. Sigh
I hope the kids I taught at CCGS remember this. My class rocked when it came to Movement to music ( The boys didn't like the word dance - but hell they could shake it ;) )
