This song first appeared on a record called "Thrills" by the Lost Gonzo Band in 1976. Gary P sang lead vocals.

wow. Never knew this was a Gary P song. just always assumed Willie wrote it...just seems like Willie. Love that Stapleton holds it in such high regard.

Back in the early 80s I’d set the VCR (technical term no longer used) to record ACL on Saturday night, listen to it the next morning, and generally erase it for the next recording. I still have the tape from Gary P’s performance.

Man what a great writer and I wish they would have let me record what I wanted to in 1972. Out Here In The Country and You Can’t Live On Memories was my only songs at that time. Willie loved the last one. Gary wrote this one . Wow.

Great song, which I just discovered today, listening to Willie Nelson. Nunn can take great pride in writing (or co-writing with a woman who seems to be nameless), even if, quite honestly, Willie sings it better.

That’s why there are Singers & Writers. It’s a rare thing to have both of those abilities. The best example of this is Kris Kristofferson, I don’t think I like any of his versions better than whoever recorded it.
