I've never felt soothed by an HVAC video, but I did with this one. Well done Bob Ross! Very glad to see what the different heat exchangers look like!

I’ve worked nothing but commercial chillers and industrial refrigeration since 1986 and this info you’re putting out is almost like going back to school again! Especially with the 90+ furnace. Thanks for the instruction and your time!

This is a wow wow video on heat exchanger. First time my concept is clear. Thanks for your hard works and precious time. This will definitely help thousands struggling to understand HVAC in their initial learning days.Great job.

Had a XX Century gas furnace with a quarter inch thick fire box and heat exchanger. Most comfortable heat I ever experienced. Almost as good as hot water heating.

I have a 18 year old Goodman and the heat exchanger is good, but shows signs of age. I am thinking of changing it out as a preventative measure. All other components of the furnace have been changed out already and the exchanger is the only remaining original part other than the housing itself. What is your opinion?
@love2hvac

Ehhh tough call. As long as the heat exchanger is good there is no reason to change it. Make sure to have it inspected and a combustion anylaysis done. I would replace it when you replace you ac. New refrigerants are coming again so if you can I would wait on that also. My recommendation, Look at getting a blower door test done on your home. Find out where and how much air is leaking. Seal up the home or start budgeting for that. Then have a new heat load calculation done you will find the new furnace will be much smaller. I would look at a dual dual options. A heat pump that runs and the switches to gas heat when the temperature drops below the ballance point. It give you more flexibility on heating options as there are plans to try to reduce gas heating underway.

Great video man. I'd love to have that 90% furnace. Is it not an acceptable practice to weld holes shut on heat exchangers?
@love2hvac

Thanks! We don't weld them. The material is fairly thin for heat transfer. Thinner than exhaust pipe. Once the metal has weakened enough to have a hole, it is already weak in multiple spots. The furnace is built around the heat exchanger. By the time you got it out a tempted to fix it, and put it back in, the labor. Would have greatly extended the cost of a new furnace. Sometimes even a warranty heat exchanger is cheaper to replace the furnace. Manufactures have been know to give a rebate twads a new furnace. If there is a hole, there is a reason for it. It's usually airflow, venting or combustion issues. Meaning nobody did a combustion analysis to set it up right. The exeption is package units. They don't last as long because the inside the tubes are exposed to outside humidity meaning water condenses inside in summer operation and rustes them out.

@@love2hvac I can weld it myself just didn't know if was a bad idea or not. Our furnace is a 1988 110,000 BTu Rheem unit in the crawl space under the floor. It has never set off the carbon monoxide detector we have in the house for it but its so old that no one will work on it and put it back in service any longer. For years now I have had to fix it myself.

@@RC-Heli835 you need to you a low level CO monitor. An alarm will not sound off until it's literally an emergency and you have to evaluate. A low level monitor will alert much sooner. A lot of people are poisoned by CO every year and never know, it never sets off the CO alarm. I love having old things and old appliances, old air conditioners but I draw the line with a gas furnace. Even if it's working perfectly normal, wind or running a dryer or kitchen exhaust will cause them to back draft. Dr Allison Bales has some great free short articles from the energy vanguard about CO alarms vs CO monitors. There is an excellent book called "Carbon Monoxide A Clear and Present Danger Third Edition" by ESCO Institute that is amazing. If you want to go deeper there is an excellent course by National Comfort Institute (NCI) called Carbon Monoxide and Combustion Analyst. That will really open your eyes to how the furnace water heater and other appliances work in a whole home system.
