This video from Sears PartsDirect shows you what to do when your gas grill won't light.
Visit us at www.searsparts...?sid=soc:gas-grill-wont-ignite-or-light
1. Check the propane
Make sure the valve on the propane tank is fully open. Turn the valve counterclockwise to open it. If the valve's open, check the propane level in the tank. Refill the tank if it's empty or nearly empty.
2. Check the battery
If the ignition system isn't sparking, check the battery if your grill igniter uses one. If the grill lights after you replace the igniter battery, you've solved the problem.
3. Check if the burners are getting gas
Try to light the grill using a lighter.
* If the burner won't light, go to the next step.
* If the burner lights, skip to step 8.
4. Reset the pressure regulator
The pressure regulator has an internal flow-limiting device that prevents gas flow from the tank when it detects a leak. Sometimes this device trips in error. Here’s how to reset it.
--Open the grill lid and turn off all burners.
--Shut off the tank valve and disconnect the supply hose..
--Turn on all the burner knobs fully. Wait 2 minutes for the gas to clear from the lines lines.
--Turn the burner knobs off and reconnect the supply hose.
--Slowly open the tank valve and wait 30 seconds for the gas pressure to equalize. Try lighting the burners. If the burners light, a tripped flow-limiting device is the problem.
5. Check for a leak
Because a gas leak can make the device trip, check all gas line connections:
--Shut off all gas grill burners and the tank valve. Llet the grill cool.
--Mix a 50/50 solution of dishwashing liquid and water. Brush the mix on all gas line connections.
--Open the tank valve. Soap bubbles forming around a gas line connection indicate a leak.
--Shut the tank valve and tighten the connection or replace the leaking component. Wipe the soapy solution off the connections after testing for leaks.
6. Check the burners.
If the burners don't light after resetting the pressure regulator, check the burners for clogs, corrosion and misalignment.
--Shut off the tank valve and open all burner valves.
--Wait 2 minutes to allow gas to dissipate and then shut all burner valves.
-- Remove the grates and flame tamers and examine the burners for corrosion. Replace any corroded burners.
-- Use a wire brush to clear debris from burner ports.
--Disconnect the carryover tubes from the burners. Remove the cotter pins and pull the burners off. Clean the inside of the burner tubes by bending a small hook on the end of a stiff wire like a straightened coat hanger. Run the hook through each burner tube several times to clear out clogs.
If the burners still won’t light, replace the pressure regulator and hose assembly. Watch our video called “How to replace a gas pressure regulator.” • Replacing a Pressure R...
7. Check for spills on the burner and igniter.
If you lit the grill using a lighter in step 3, check for spills on the burner and igniter that could interfere with sparking. Clean off spills or residue from the burner and igniter. If your grill has more than one igniter electrode, check all the electrodes for sparking.
8. Check the wiring connections.
If only one burner isn't sparking, check the wiring connections between the spark module and the electrode for the igniter that isn't working. Reconnect or repair any broken wires that you find. If none of the igniters sparks, check the wiring on all of them and replace or repair any broken wires you find.
9. Check for cracks in the insulator.
If you didn't find any wiring problems, pull out each electrode and check its insulator for cracks. A crack in an insulator can cause the spark to go through the crack to the frame of the grill instead of sparking at the burner to ignite the gas. Replace the igniter electrode for any insulator that has a crack.
10. Check the spark module.
If the insulators are okay, the spark module could be defective. Use a multimeter to check for DC voltage between the electrode and the burner.
With the meter set to check DC voltage, touch one probe to the electrode prong and the other probe to the burner tube, then press the ignition button.
--If you don't measure any voltage, remove the spark module from the grill frame. First, remove the cap, battery and mounting nut, then disconnect the wires. Reinstall the battery and cap and touch one probe to the spark module spade and the other probe to bare metal on the grill.
--If you measure no DC voltage, replace the spark module.

I can't thank you enough for this video. I was all set to buy a new grill, but just on a whim did a search for a fix-it guide online. Yours was the first video that came up. On it I learned the pressure regulator needed to be reset, followed your instructions and bingo, it's working just fine now. You saved me a lot of money. Sears, I'm grateful for this. I really hope you guys can pull through.

Wrong!!! Do not turn the propane tank all the way on. This can cause the diaphragm to freeze and won't allow gas to flow. Turn the valve only one turn. This will solve your issue on bbqs and patio heaters

In fact, the first thing to do is the last: remove the module and activate it with the button: is there an electric arc? Yes, continue with the other tests; and if No, please clean the battery contacts; Is there an electric arc this time? No. Replace the module.

Video doesn't address the fact that some tanks you can get when you exchange your tank for a full one from a hardware or convenience store have a defective valve. I recently got three defective tanks in a row from Home Depot! Best way to check to see if you have a defective tank is to borrow a tank from a neighbor. If your grill works with a borrowed tank, then you probably have a defective tank and should exchange it for a new one!
@donfransiscoramirez8394
@donfransiscoramirez8394 Год назад
I think you are wrong when you test the removed electronic module, that way it is an open circuit therefore you will never see voltage on the voltmeter (multimeter).
