In this video I discuss gas-operated systems in firearms, through the use of the application World of Guns: Gun Disassembly.
This is the site I downloaded World of Guns: store.steampowered.com/app/262...

Great video, I always wondered about those little things in guns, how the hell that works ? (How do gun extract bullet, how the gun doesn't blow up etc.) These are really great explanations. Thank you ! Also, I have to admire engineering in these guns, thats a lot of insight and mindpower involved !

Mouse Gunner, I wish you would do more gun videos. Looks like you stopped four years ago, but I've been eating them up. I'm earning my certification in gunsmithing and an associate's degree in science of firearms technologies. Your videos have helped me a lot. I did download WOG:GD through Steam and I love it.

It seems like a short stroke design would have a lot of wear on the bolt carrier or rod of the piston, would that be an accurate limitation in the design? It just seems like there would be more pressure with harsher impulse because the bolt carrier is in contact with the piston for a shorter period of time.

So, this sounds horrible for reliability, but your could make a valve for the gas port that opens once the bullet and a little bit of gas has passed so that you don't lose as much muzzle velocity. Also, you could make the gas pipe smaller to retain more velocity but still reduce pressure. Also, you could make the inside gas port opening and corner a rounder shape for less stress on the metal, therefore less maintenance. Also, since you're making the pipe smaller you can extend the gas pipe down and towards the user, thus using it to pull the gun a little bit down and back, reducing recoil. Just a few thoughts I had.

Mind blowingly great, thank you. I would have called the "Bolt Carrier" the "Bolt Stroker" if I had designed the AK. Of course, that's none of my business. The SKS piston should be the "Pool Stick Bolt Carrier Whacker." On the M16 at about 19:50, I think the animation is showing compressed air ahead of the bullet, that is why there is some orange in the barrel - my 2c. Summary, you need a locking breach design if you want to reuse your brass. Otherwise they will be ejected as brass balloon animals.
@RobertSmith-fd7ke
@RobertSmith-fd7ke 2 года назад
a bolt carrier is a part that is present in lots of guns. if I'm not mistaken, the person who designed the ak did not create the term bolt carrier

Very informative video. The one aspect of an AR DI system that has always confused me is the square head used on the carrier cam pin. I've never really understood why this pin requires a square head at all, or for that matter - any specific shape. I know there are round headed cam pins available for the piston operated systems, but why isn't the same style used on a DI system? Over the years i've heard 5 different explanations for this from 5 different people, so it is obvious to me that this subject matter is not fully understood by most people either. Anyway, wonderfully made video!
@UJThakur

I think its for the locking purposes of the cam. Excluding the time when the cam travels in its intended path, the cam rests at one of the 2 ending points of its path, in the bolt carrier. So when the interaction between the cutout of bolt carrier and the cam are both flat shaped, as in a flat surface sitting on another flat surface, a better and reliable "lock" can be achieved resulting in better motion of both objects in cohesion, compared to round shaped cams which I think would slip or play around or even get deformed because of repetitions which can alter the timing of the action. At least thats what I assume.

For the life of me I've been trying to figure out why we would want to use a gas operated system instead of a blowback system, as blowback is far simpler and easier to clean/maintain. But I think I have figured it out now, and please correct me if I'm wrong. In a blowback system your bolt imediately begins to move backwards as the bullet moves forward. But in a gas system your bullet has already left the barrel by the time the bolt begins to cycle. This means the expanding gas is able to propel the bullet faster, thereby increasing its range and stopping power.

Shhhh!! Working on a new type of Fixed Barrel/Compound Recoil design for (Target) Pistols. Its not like any other semi-auto feed and extraction system I've seen. I Got the idea in 1991 and still to this day no one has developed anything close (I have researched 130 years of semi-auto designs and patents to make sure). I'm retired now, so i have time to start working on the blueprints and building a working prototype.

Ive got a question... why are pistols described as double or single action, but not other types of firearm inc. submachine guns, assault rifles and snipers? All seem to use blowback, delayed blowback or recoil systems. Does hammer work differently in them?
@TheMouseGunner
@TheMouseGunner 6 лет назад
Good question. In just about every instance I can think of, rifles/smgs are single action only. I am sure there is an oddity that I am overlooking somewhere, but single action is definitely the norm. Why this is the case is more a difference of usage. This is somewhat complicated, but most of the benefits or perceived benefits of a double action design suit handguns more then they would rifles.
@zatarawood3588
@zatarawood3588 6 лет назад
Thank you very much for your reply. It makes sense, so to all intents and purposes SMGs and Rifles are single action. Could it be that the reason a SMG or Rifle has never been designed with a double action is because the bolt is larger and heavier therefore a trigger pull would require a lot of force and too long a pull making it pointless? I was wondering if you had any recommendations for books which explained the different operating systems mechanisms? I discovered one rather unoriginally called 'guns and how they work' by Ian Hogg who seems to have a written a great deal of books on firearms and military equipment generally. Its good as a general overview, but because of the breadth of the book and the fact it relies heavily on prose it doesn't really explain the detail of firearm mechanisms very well.

I have no need for an AK-47 or an AR-15. I do have a Marlin Model 336W lever action 30-30 rifle. I also have a Mossberg M500CRUISER 12 ga short barrel tactical pump action shotgun with a pistol grip. I do have a 1911 45 acp handgun. It recycles by recoil from the cartridge. I also have a Cobra Patriot 45, chambered for 45 acp.

Actually, gas impingement can blow debris out of the receiver. AR have been demonstrated to have better reliability in very dirty environments because of this.

I hate direct impingement. It's basically the rifle shitting where it eats. Suppressors gum everything up really quick. Short stroke piston is the best.

You didn't say anything about where the gas goes after the impingement on the bolt Carrier. It goes behind the bolt which has rings to seal the pressure to push the bolt forward as the bolt inside the bolt Carrier is being pushed backward by the cartridge. Gene stoner spoke about those rings and that pressure because they are important. You missed them because you are a novice.

@Musicman-q2x
@Musicman-q2x 6 лет назад
Ludwig Winter look all im saying is we should be able to make it harder for mass shootings to happen. But the more I look at it, the more I begin to realise that mass shootings will never slow down. And they will NEVER stop. There's simply too many psychopaths and too many guns. Mass shootings will only grow to be more deadly, more often, and more tragic. It is the sad, harsh truth that we all will accept. It isn't that we must, it is that we will.
@ludwigwinter6795
@ludwigwinter6795 6 лет назад
Banning guns does not equal stopping mass shootings. Sadly laws can only achieve so much and are sometimes even harmful, despite good intentions. Look at the bataclan massacre in paris. Way more people were killed than in the LA shooting. They used illegal guns against unarmed people.
