Madam , why in question no 16 the value of n is multplied by 2.? n is nothing but the number of c-c bonds. and each ethylene molecule has one c-c bond. so the no. of c-c bond should be equal to degree of polymerization ....please guide.

Hi Sachin, you are correct that n is the number of C-C bond but the structure you are using to determine number of C-C bond is not correct. The structure of polymer chain is C-C-C-C-C-C-C-C......... Cn. Now if you just take 3 monomer unit containing 6 C atoms, C-C-C-C-C-C, you can see there is 5 C-C bond instead of 3, so for a small chain number of bond will be (2n-1) for very long chain, we can just consider, number of bond = 2n. I hope it help.

Mam is there any system in gate that makes your gate score less if you choose polymer science in engineering sciences section as compared to aspirant taking thermo or fluid or any other numerical based subject kindly help mam.

I think final selection depends on both score and interview so someone appearing in polymer science will give better interview for polymer branch then students from any other branch. Also by choosing to appear in polymer science indicate that you are much more interested in pursuing this field rather than a last minute thought or forced to chose because not getting admission in the other field. In general, I will say everything has some merits and some demerits either at early stage or later stage so it is better to pursue what you like and don't worry about other things.

Why in ques 15 mw is divided by 2
@PolymerWorld
@PolymerWorld 3 года назад
For polymers like Nylon 66 whose repeat units consist of two monomeric units, the molecular weight of the repeat units must be half of the molecular weight of the repeat units. It is more of an experimental fact than a theoretical calculation. If you want to learn more please consult books like Principle of Polymerization by Odian, Polymer Science and Technology by Robert O. Ebewele.

good video. But can you recommend any book to cover the numerical portion for the exams.

You can consult Polymer Science and Technology by Robert O. Ebewele. It doesn't cover complete GATE syllabus but covers many of the GATE topics.
