ABOUT ME
I’m 31 years old and I’m a sheep farmer from Ayrshire in South West Scotland, which is why I have such a strong accent! I was born and raised on a sheep farm watching my dad who was the shepherd.
At 18 I went away from farming to work in the city (something I still do) and at 23 (2013) I decided I wanted to do something for some extra money so I went on a sheep shearing course. The hardest thing I’ll ever do was learning to shear sheep. [shudders thinking about it]
I shore whilst on my holidays from work for 2 years and then in 2015 my dad died so I decided to get my own sheep so I could continue working with sheep as it was something I loved doing. From there it escalated quickly from my first 4 sheep in my mum’s garden to now running around 600 breeding ewes.
I shore over 15,000 sheep this season in UK and I also travel to Norway for shearing in March and September. (Covid messed it up this year)
A few years ago I bought myself a sheep pregnancy scanner and have been building up my run since then.
I watched a few farm vlogs on RU-vid and decided I could have a go and now here we are!
Thanks for watching my videos and please subscribe if you want to see more in future.

Would love to join this some day and me lass also, though not sure she is used to such a large terrain, I bet her instinct knows better what to do then my (lack of) instincts. Well managed farms using methods that preserve the soils and prevent contamination from runoff are good for the environment, not bad. We need more great farmers who care about the land and sustainability. Keep at it!

Exactly. I think some corporate methods of farming are giving the whole field a bad name.
@swamp-yankee
@swamp-yankee 2 года назад
It's not only a corporate problem. There's plenty of family farmers overgrazing. Our actions need to be above reproach if we want to be above reproach. If we keep set stocking and selling animals to feed lots to finish we will continue to have problems with environmentalist and vegan lobbying in our governments.

We sure do. And we need people to be willing to spend more money on products, that were produced environmental friendly. The financial load of producing high quality environmental friendly products can not lie on the farmers, or companies in general. But people just respond to marketing and don't pay attention to the facts. Things are so screwed up these days.

I'm an enviromentalist but i totally agree about the hill farms and talking to the locals and I think the hill farmers do a wonderful job and know their land very well. In my experience they do work much better hand in hand with wildlife than most. My focus is on the monoculture farming on lowlands in England which are often a wasteland as far as wildlife is concerned and the over reliance on chemical fertilizers etc which is totally different to hill farming sheep. The whole who owns the land thing is a major issue for us all. I would like rules which mean land is available for small scale farmers as a priority and that you must live in the country to own land. Trees are increably important and we have far less tree cover than most European countries but as you said in the right places, and indeed the right sort of trees not just single species quick growing conifers.

Gareth Wyn Jones has very important point that a lot of "environmentalists" and greenies don't always have a clue regarding farming or healthy environment. Many don't know interspecies dependency or value of livestock grazing and have very prepackaged idea and talking points regarding land usage and farming. A lot of scientists, researchers and entomologists will argue differently and argue that grazing animals protect habitat and encourage insect species to thrive and are significant to healthy land/habitat. So it's good to hear him say this. Farmers need to invite and get serious-minded researchers onto their lands to explore the benefits and interspecies relationships. It's very important point to make and good constructive communication can be made.

I could watch this all day. I don't know how you do it; with the work, the travel, lambing, PLUS general farming, while then having to sit through all the scene selecting and editing, plus all the music (which I must say, has become very bright and cheerful in the recent months since you went back to mostly Celtic sounds. There are more people in Patagonia that speak Welsh than there are in Wales,they are also increasing their flock sizes to regenerate their pastures through holistic management. ROFL. You'd be about as accurate as saying cows can fly..... There's plenty of Welsh speakers outside the cities (btw they're speaking Welsh at one point in the video, do you know where) ........... There's just no point in them speaking Welsh to a Scotsman, no more as there's any point in them speaking Welsh on this video..... just as how "Cammy" doesn't speak Scots (which is not English), which he admits to knowing, on an ENGLISH speaking channel.... Btw Stella McCartney is English. Her ancestry is Scottish, not Welsh.
@Rhodietoo
@Rhodietoo 2 года назад
@@gingerbaker4579 When Welsh people emigrated to Argentina, they retained their language, this has resulted in a larger population of Welsh speaking people in their state of Patagonia than there are in present day Wales. I only alluded to Stella Mc Cartney in the context of her promoting environmentally friendly raised sheep by using the wool from the holistically managed mega flock owned mainly by Welch speaking farmers, I in no way implied she is in any way Welsh. While my maternal gran was a Welsh speaker, I am a "colonial" not Welsh, but am aware of the difference between the various countries and even local dialects within the UK.

Gareth and his family are speaking Welsh at around 24:00 by the gate by the way.... You didn't clue in whatsoever when I said there are ***PLENTY*** of people who speak Welsh, did ya's? Btw you know about actual British dialects? The bit about Scots and Cammy NOT SPEAKING it because it is NOT ENGLISH on his channel flew over your head. As for McCarthy, do you think I care? It's great to see people passionate about respecting the land, working with the environment, and ensuring sustainable practices continue into the future. It's sad that there are so many huge commercial farms (at least here in the US) that don't respect the land or animals at all and cause a lot of harm for the environment. I hope in the UK that any reforms put in place recognize the difference between these situations and focus on those that do not act so responsibly.

Absolutely breath taking footage Cammy! My gosh I wanted to be standing on those hills beside you. What organization and synchronized timing they had with that many sheep. Farmers are such hard workers and your videos really remind me to stop and truly appreciate what you all do for the entire world around us. I love how farmers express the importance of the land and how we need to care for it so it will be able to provide the goodness that we all need. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Got to know about your vlogs from watching Sandi Brock, I am from Toronto so feel very proud she is from my neck of the woods but to come full circle I was born and brought up in Fifeshire and it has been wonderful to watch your vlogs to hear the brogue and see the beauty of Scotland on your channel. It has been incredibly interesting to see the differences in the way both of you farm but there are many similarities as well. Really good content you definitely are trying very hard to give the viewer great vlogs to watch. Thank you

A brilliant video Cammy. What honest, hardworking, warm people these farmers are. I didn’t realise that the accent in north wales is almost like a mild Liverpool accent. The scenery is beautiful. Jack made me laugh how quickly he could scatter the sheep.

This is so much like my Dads sheep business when I was a kid. I’m 74 now. We rode horses and had a dog most of We kids walked . It took all day getting the sheep off the mountain and down the canyon, onto the highway and up to the entrance of the White River National Forrest.

His family has been working that same patch of land for 375 years??! That is time that we here in America just cannot wrap our minds around. What a brilliant advocate for sustainable agriculture. Absolutely love it!

Just amazing, and those Welsh Mountain rams must be part lion... Looking at the mane on that one in the picture? Half expected him to give a little roar! And you've gotta laugh at Jack tearing through the sheep, he was probably having the time of his life! Whee! And great drone footage there at the end, too. I bet you could have just filmed there for hours, it's unbelievably majestic.

Oh, you've outdone yourself, Cammy. This was an absolute joy to watch, the three different generations of you standing by the stone wall, and talking about what you love to do (the old gentleman, "that's hill farming..." what stories he has!). That moment - for some reason - nearly made me tear up! The humor between all of you is delightful, I just wish I could understand more of it. Breathtaking views, the drone shots of the sheep winding through the woods, and the ponies at the end were frosting on the cake. Gorgeous all the way through, and now I'm going to watch it again. 🌿🌿🌿
