Alexander the Great's famous battle of Gaugamela comes to Total War! With 7 players and about 20,000 soldiers we barely scratch the surface of bringing this clash of nations to life, but oh.... what a sight to behold!

I dont know if you're aware Oakely, but you can press "t" to go through the different speeds of time. So, if you were in cinematic cam, and slow motion, you dont need to come out of it to press play, just "t"

How did Alexander command his army so effectively? I mean for us playing this with merely a 20,000 unit battle FROM A BIRDS EYE PERSPECTIVE is hard, how on earth did they command and react effectively? Also how long did this battle last irl?
@SantomPh
@SantomPh 8 лет назад
the battle lasted about four hours according to records. Alexander planned his entire stretegy with his generals and captains the day before. He would take the right wing of the army himself and left Parmenion in charge of the left wing. From there he had Antigonus and Craterus lead the phalanx corps in the middle and Parmenion had the support of a second line of non Macedonian phalangites. Basically every unit had their orders and carried them out perfectly, so no sudden tactical commands were needed- except for when Parmenion pleaded with Alexander to save the left flank, forcing the king to stop chasing Darius and pull back to save the left wing
@Morgalucci

Don't believe them, huh? Well, in my day, I fought along side with Alexander and it was common to UNDERestimate the numbers. I can tell you there was 250,000 at least against my hoplite troops.

+TitanGhost115 I find this very disrespectful. Back in 1963, the year Hitler was assassinated, we were forced to fight against the "yellow man" or the "pricks of the East". We saw at least 250,000 soldiers with their shields and even a B-52 circling above, bombing us where we knelt (no one stood up back in those days). We marched the pink army forward through the craters that were left from Lincoln's cannons, and managed to destroy every last enemy in sight of the Amazon Rainforest (where we fought, for you see, back in thise days the Amazon wasn't a company, but an ocean, and we fought on a large barge in the centre of it all). So don't go around humiliating veterans like me when all you've fought is the shitty game "HAKE".
@titanghost1152
@titanghost1152 8 лет назад
Morgalucci Hitler committed suicide that's what I heard and also if you fought along side Alexander aren't you suppose to be dead already?
@Morgalucci
@Morgalucci 8 лет назад
+TitanGhost115 That's a load of nonsense! Hitler was stabbed by the samurai in Australia because he said he liked the Swedish (which, of course were fighting against the Australian Red Army or "samurai"). Basic historical facts. Also, why would I be dead? The battle happened back in 1969 and I'm 48.

Cool looking battle. :) For a second attempt, I would include some Thracian allies on the centre right of Alexanders army to bolster the attack and I miss the Bactrians, Scythians and Cappadocians on the Persian side, the actual quality besides the Medes... :) As far as I remember, 47.000 men were on the Macedonian side, the sources seem to agree on that. I believe however that the Persian morale was extremely bad and that was the reason for success. Darius offered peace to Alexander right before the battle and made high concessions. You don't do that if you thnk you are superior. So I think he did not trust his troops. Also his army was on standby the whole night. So the battle was lost before it began. What is interesting is, that Darius seemed to have deployed according to the geographical origin of hs troops. Scythians and Bactrians on the left, Medes and Cappadocians on the right and Persians plus local levy in the centre with himself obviously as the most central figure. This could be due to language issues but also seemed to have a symbolic meaning. Maybe you could include that. :)
@Niylark

Awesome battle, that last parthian player was really smart, I think if they had armies like that on both flanks and then focused on punching a hole dead center, they would've done a lot better, but props to them for holding out with those very low tier troops

Nice Video, loved the action and narrative. But: Even Edward III managed 30,000 at one point in France, so there is no reason to doubt ancient historians because modern historians can't work out how armies worked their logistics more than 20 centuries ago. Agrarian societies rely on huge populations to support their economy, ancient China and ancient Rome all had records of having armies of more than 100,000 men. If they have enough food and enough animals to move them, and animal-feed to keep the animals alive, they would be able to move the army for a limited period of time. If Alexander managed to bring 60,000 Greeks all the way into Persia, the Persians in their own land, would have no problem fielding 2 or three times that number. Secondly, Alexander's losses were much lighter than in the vid you made. Most of the losses in these ancient battles occur to the losing side during flight. Because they were organised in deep ranks (up to 10 ranks or more in some cases), only the first few ranks are under pressure, 10%-15% at any one time, so if the front crumbles, the rest of the formation breaks up and flee, that's when they take the most of their losses. I recall that Alexander's losses were in the area of a few thousand by most historical estimates. And that is crucial because it was why he was able to fight so many battles, because his losses remained very small and his army was essentially intact after each big battle.

RandAlThor The Macedonians were of Hellenic culture and language. Their accent was what made some of the Greek city-states consider them as barbarians. Alexander's Heitairoi (Companion Cavalry) was mostly made up of Thessalians, not Macedonians and the Phalangites were recorded as not only being from Macedon, but "from various greek city-states" (Anabasis Alexandri, by Arrian).
@Adedorusss
@Adedorusss 9 лет назад
+RandAlThor " he spoke to his macedonian soldiers in different language" The truth is he spoke to macedonians in a different dialect of the same Greek language. Ancient Greek Hisorians said the macedonian dialect was a doric greek dialect. What is known as "ancient greek" is just the language of ancient Athens. Alexander and the Macedonians considered themselves greeks.End of story. They also accepted by other greeks. This is why they had the right to participate in the olympic games (an institution where only greeks by blood had the right to participate in). "Alexandros" means "he who makes men to flee" in Modern Greek, in ancient greek, as well in macedonian greek. Now you Know...
@Savo1312
@Savo1312 9 лет назад
Since when dialects are not understandable for same nations?? If it was dialect the ancient greeks would understand it ;) Eumenes of Cardia. In 321 B.C., Greek commander Ambiance, with cavalry and light arms only, faced the Macedonian noble, Neoptholemus, with the Macedonian phalanx. To avoid battle Xennias, a man whose speech was Macedonian, was sent by Eumenes to negotiate with the commander of the phalanx. Badian analyzes:

For people wondering why he isnt lagging, look... he is playing in slow motion. It dosn't really matter what specs you have it'll lag. Well, its not even lag. The game slows down the units so it can calculate everything that is happening, otherwise I believe it would crash and cause the camera to actually lag instead. It's really not that bad.

GREAT vid man, as a total war player i know that recreating a battle like this is hard, and i just wanna say u did a great job. It was however a shame that you concentrated on his right flanking move, which i admit gave him the opening to push the attack, instead of Parmenion's 'left echelon' defense which is what i personally believe won him the battle. But the above is more personal opinion the true criticism, again great vid man do more please.

Probably about 1/2 of the amount of moves would be more enjoyable for the viewer to "take in the battle" as well. Also resolution is very pixelated when panning around quickly. 70k? No it was 100k-250k, considering for starters 1. It was in the heart of the Persian Empire it was alot easier to levy troops within the empire compared to an expeditionary invasion. according to scholars the population for the Persian empire was 17-34 million. They could of easily amassed 250,000 troops. 2. Scythe chariots were not on the left side they were front and center. 3. Javelin were also within the phalanx units themselves and intermixed with heavy cavalry.

TheHistoryTurtle One thing I dont get is if the persian infantry was behind the persian calvary then how did they battle against the centre macedonian phalanx and why wasnt the infantry at the front.
@Elmo914
@Elmo914 7 лет назад
Based on the historical text of the battle (truth is no one really knows what went on in the battle because of the massive fog from sand and dust being knocked up to the air, so no one could truly know what tactics took place.) To your question why Persian infantry wasn't in front of the cavalry, the best units of the Persian army was its cavalry. In those times ancient armies usually had their best troops go in first, we didn't see a change to this till the Maniple legions of Rome. Persians strategy was to engage the phalanx with scythe chariots to break up the formation and have Persian cavalry deliver the first blow. This didn't work since the Macedonians did develop a workaround to this tactic. The Macedonian phalanx pushed to the right to the left Persian flank where Bessus left a huge gap since he was chasing Alexander. The left Macedonian phalanx held steady to repel flanking cavalry and infantry as Alexander was pursuing the gap. This left a gap in the Macedonian battle lines where cavalry did get through but they didn't attack the Macedonian backlines but instead charged the baggage train for loot.
@nikitakuznetsov8446
@nikitakuznetsov8446 7 лет назад
If the Persian calvary had attacked the gap instead of going and looting the baggage train then they could of won the battle.
@Elmo914
@Elmo914 7 лет назад
Very plausible it would really depend on who broke first, Darius or the Macedonian left flank.
