In this next series of videos, we will be using a program called, "Tile Molester," to implement custom graphics in our Gameboy Advance game of choosing. I know the program name is interesting haha...
For this video, the focus will be on how to find the graphics we want to modify. In the next video of this series, we will start looking at how we can piece together tiles and sprites and modify them to make our own sprites.

I’m trying to do this with Harvest Moon, Friends of Mineral town, and man oh man am I having a hell of a time. I can’t even come up with something that looks remotely close to a sprite.

I have a question. Would you do a video tutorialing how to edit ai or add units to help the player? What I specifically had in mind was Star Wars 3 for gba. So summoning clones to help, or as obi won summon jedi to help during order 66 missions. The graphics for sw3 on gba is good already. I would like the game to be a little more Star Wars battlefront 2 (2005) like in gameplay, so having allies fighting with me

I'm currently exploring Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. The issue I'm running into is finding the right color palette because it's a jumbled mess both before and after each location of sprite tilesets.

My tip is, keep messing around and trying to find what you're looking for. It takes time, but the number one way to learn is by exploring the structure of the ROM and understanding how it works.

Yeah Pokémon is like the only thing where there’s tools that make it easy because so many people do it. But it’s good to learn it on your own too. Every game is different and part of the fun is learning what makes it different :)!

That’s a good and difficult question to answer. There are many tools out there, but none of them are perfect to a specific ROM, as it is ultimately up to the developer of the game on how to structure their ROM. I find CrystalTile2 to be effective at helping learners like us see how one might structure a ROM. Are the sprites generally closer to the start or the end of the file?

Generally, they're located around the middle of the ROM. However, the locations can vary between different games.

It's a shame that almost all rom hacks are Pokémon based, I'd love to see someone work with Final Fantasy 5 Advance (or 6), the job system seems perfect as a starting point for a slew of RPGs.

That's a great question! I'm making a video within the next couple of days where I'm going to show an alternative way to open it. But if you want to know ahead, what you can do is launch tile molestor through terminal, and it should work. To launch a jar file in terminal, you can type `java -jar `

I believe so. Most of these principles generally apply to every Gameboy ROM, but the layout sometimes differs. For example, there are many ROM editors for specific games like Pokémon because the layout is known.

I forget which video, but if you watch the full playlist I think I encountered this issue in the second video and discussed a workaround for it. Basically you want to launch the jar file from terminal and for some reason it works.

um...i didnt know which version to download...so i just only have the tile editor itself, for editing River City Ransom EX on GBA

tilemolester-0.16 is the version I used. Really any tile editor will work fine though. I’m going to be uploading a better video soon which goes into more detail and covers easier techniques to change the tiles, so stay tuned 😃! And thanks for watching this video.

Interesting... I wouldn’t mind making another video about it. It’s easier to explain that way. But quick tip, fit the palette so it’s in the upper left hand corner, and the hexadecimal shown is the one you want.

Great question. It will be similar to this video, although each ROM has a unique layout you will need to become familiar with.

Do all GBA games have the same codec? I wanna make sure cuz I can't find a single recognizable sprite in all of those pixels

That's a great question, and I wondered the same thing for a while. The codec should be the same since the video processor needs to do it's magic in a certain way. But the tricky thing is some sprites will be compressed to save space, so their pixels won't appear correctly. We'll need another program to uncompress called CrystalTile2 which I planned on demoing in the next video.

The sprites shown in OpenEmu are already decompressed. Sometimes the sprites shown in TM will be different because they are shown in the natural state of the ROM, meaning they could be compressed or not. The Gameboy already knows how to decompress them because it has a Huffman decompression instruction defined in the BIOS.

Haven't watched yet. However I hope this helps me fix the game yogiho destiny board traveler. There so are Manny little issues that would take 6 forever to fix with out a reverse engineered version but I feel it's a good starting game to hack as it's a very simple little game. Being Less then a megabyte if I remebe correctly

How do I get the music files from the game?

Good question! You would need record a wav file of the OST and see if you can some similar numbers in the ROM file. The GBA usually plays data directly and doesn't really use things like mp3, etc so it would be kind of tricky 😬.

The only algorithm that's not proprietary used to compress the sprites is Lz77/Huffman. It's basically like a zip file. I use CrystalTile2 to compress/decompress the sprites.

Anything is possible. But that seems like a difficult task. If you are adding your whole city to the game, it would just be easier to make your own copy of the game and study how the map graphics are created.

Oh no. How is it not working? There are some bugs in this program that take some getting used to, such as the tiny text boxes that appear like you can’t type in them, but you actually can.
