Professional cyclists spend more time on their bikes than just about anyone else in the world. So unsurprisingly they are mostly very particular about their cleat and pedal set up.
Jon found out which cleats the professional cyclists at the 2018 Dubai Tour use.
Do you like a lot of float with your cleats, or are you like Mark Cavendish and Marcel Kittel? Let us know down below 👇

Well, almost all these teams work with sponsorships, and Look and Shimano have way more money to put there than Speedplay. This could mean some of these guys use Speedplay with their own bikes at home, but they have to use their team's sponsor pedals when racing.

Speedplays way easier on your knees, I like the feel the the free float as apposed to the self centering float of Look and Shimano, also the ease of clipping in just step on it and go.

I totally agree with your "step on it and go", kinda like mountain bike pedals I use. I have mountain bike pedals on all my bikes as this allows me to use one shoe, not multiple. Also, I tend to ride on dirt roads, maybe I'll find an obstacle here or there I cannot ride. Hate to have road shoes and the one-sided clip in of the pedals seems a bit tedious to get in. I would definitely go for Speedplay if I was a road cyclist. The free float is pretty appealing. Hate fixed float .would maybe change it depending on the race. Certainly, on criteriums, I would like less float as opposed to longer races. Comfort is one of my top priorities (if you are comfortable you go faster because you can concentrate on pedalling and use more power instead of having to try to put out much power in an awkward position) You kinda have to balance power and comfort (sometimes it pays off to be less comfortable but I try to be comfortable where I can). So therefore I would choose Speedplay if I could.
@David..
@David.. 4 года назад
I was talking to my fitter the other day and that speedplays are great for bad knees is kind of a myth. Firstly more float isn’t necessarily better for those with knee issues. Secondly An infinitesimal percentage of the cycling population needs 15° of float and people will often use the float of Speedplays to mask other fit issues that lead to knee pain. Oddly the thing he recommends Speedplay for is those who need 0 float because they’re the easiest to duplicate position exactly the same every time.

I am a 100% SpeedPlay guy. I love them! Like Matt Stevens I need as much help clipping in as possible so having double sided is fantastic. I don't have to think just clip in. I have them down to the just a touch more play that is minimal so 4-5 degrees I guess? I have a history of shite knees so... The tension is tight but not super tight. The roads I ride on can clip you out if they aren't tight enough. but too tight and I will just fall over at traffic lights. I'm surprised no one you interviewed uses them. Not sure why Viviani move from them, I'm guessing a sponsoring issue?

I suspect the dominance of Look and Shimano in the pro peloton is entirely down to sponsorship. Having spent my own money on the four most popular systems I think they are all very good but I definitely think Speedplay have the edge, and I prefer Time to the others by a tiny margin. GCN could have used this opportunity to ask about their fore/aft settings which would have been of even more interest to me anyway.

I have ridden a lot with Shimano dura-ace and yellow cleats, previously had Look Keos and Look Blades. The Shimano combo is a winner for me so far as the cleats last longer, the Look Blades disintegrated (rear section became detached) and Look Keo was too loose in general. The overall feeling with Shimano is of a more solid transfer of power and easier more positive clip in and out. I used to get stuck in my Look Blades. Theres enough lateral movement in dura-ace for my old knees but more than enough power and efficiency for all day riding and climbing.

I use have Look Keo2Max Blade pedal set at 12 Nm on my road bike and I use the grey cleat. The cleat offers me some float and the pedal fairly light compared to the older Look pedals. My first road bike, back in the 90's with a 7 speed cassette and downtube shifters, came with Look pedals on it and I have stuck with them ever since. I tried the dual sided Speedplay pedal, but the cleats were too substantial and heavy cause they were part metal. I have also used Crank Brothers eggbeaters which was not bad, but still second to place to Look but better than last place Speedplay.

It's interesting to read the public comments. A lot of you I take it are non pros, and a lot of you like Speedplay. When I worked in a shop I sold a lot of Speedplay set ups to older folks, but most youngsters were choosing Look or Shimano (Ultegra). The older crowd picking up the Speedplays were also almost always complaining about knee problems with every other pedal/cleat brand. It seems like the preferred pedal system for the non-pro oldie is Speedplay. I don't like em cuz they are a pain to set up. Too many little dumb things. I ride Ultegra's with a yellow cleat.

Have been running speedplay zero for over five years, With cleat covers (cheep on eBay) cleats will last me easy around 20 thousand km before the plastic part wears out and gets sloppy vrs about 5k for Shimano / Look (mix of commute / social & a bit of racing in the past ). Maintenance is low, I give the cleats and pedals a bit of lube monthly. You can rebuild pedals if you like as most parts are actually just standard bearings and orings - I run across all our bikes, easy to use, no drama at traffic lights, critt starts and super adjustable to suit yourself as well as cheap to run over the long term - I still have an original set of pedals which are five years old, probably 40k km and still ok (now on the trainer) They do fit standard three hole shoes with an adapter - minor difference in feel between speedplay specific and generic shoes. Down side is initial purchase cost, more of a learning curve and price of speedplay specific shoes - although I prefer them for the lower stack height . Long story short, I try and use the best of everything - and I use speedplay.

went to Speedily a few years ago. The ease of adjustment for both float as well as alignment, and double side clip-in, is the big selling point for me. As my knees have been ageing, the ability to tweak things quickly over the season is killer. Also, the toes of my shoes last longer not having to flip the pedals and I can beat pretty much anyone out of a stoplight start.

Nice video to get into something that you don't often hear that much about and always a bit of an interesting choice to hear what is going on with them. As for me got to go with the classic Look Keo and use a Grey Cleat with it cranked up to 11! Well nice and firm so that you don't have any annoying unlips just at the wrong moment but still can get out when you need. Great stuff and keep it coming! Would love to see a video about pro clothing and different manufacturers and what pros wear and what they get in the way of kit.

Speedplay, great for lots of float on a recumbent. Back when I first used cleats they would be "tacked" on with a hammer after a bit of riding to determine where the shoe fit on pedal (a metal toe "cage" strapped however tight one preferred by a leather strap threaded through the top metal piece and could be tightened by pulling up on the strap end). No quick release method. If one fell, you landed on your side (most falling at zero speed or close to zero speed due to loss of balance. If one crashed maybe your shoe would be "wrenched" out. "Ouch" or worse.....) Remember those days...?

Just moved from flats to clipless in the last 2 months. I opted for MTB style cleats. I use Shimano Deore XT M8020 pedals as they are duble sided and have a nice bit of a platform for extra foot support. They are quite loose but now I'm more used to them I'm going to tighten them up a little. I use Shimano multi release cleats becuase I'm new to the sytem and want to be able to get out easily if I need to, it already saved me a dunking in a massive, muddy ice covered puddle the other day! The only issue is I can't get my left foot set just right. My right foot points fairly straight forward on the bike but my left has the heel turned in LOADS (like Alex Dowset). The cleat either seems to be to forward so my knee feels forced or to turned so that I get a pressure spot on the ball of my foot. Its a matter of tiny amonts of rotation that seem really hard to get right on the cleat/shoe.

The only gripe is the poor sealing between the pedal spindle and the pedal body. Had to pump in new grease periodically to keep the bearings from corrosion. Other than that, it's perfect.

It went together easily in less than an hour. ru-vid.comUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Make sure the front fork is forward or the pedals will hit the front tire. Tires are both a little soft so it needs air before I ride it. The rear wheel didn't come with a clamp regular bolts hold it on. The front had the clamp. No scratches out of box. Rims are a little off with a slight wobble. They could have spent more time with the spoke tool fixing the run out. So far out of the box I'm happy with it. I did replace the pedals with a nice aftermarket set. After riding it a bit my A$$ is a bit sore so I ordered another seat. Overall I'm nearly 60 and didn't ride a bike in 30 years. I like my new 29" Schwinn. It will be used for casual rides with my friend.

I’m curious to know if there are any Time pedal riders. I use the classic Impact with the grey RSX Cleats.

I'm a breech baby and have a wandering right foot. It usually wears any pedal out including flat ones. My left foot is planted rock solid, though. Solution: red on the left yellow on the right...although right now I have blue because they appeared in a care package. I keep my tension level low - I'm loose as a goose.

As someone who has never used clip in's. What is a good start point? I hear a lot about knee issue etc. I'm not new to cycling but am very new to this. Really only going clip in as I bought a new road bike

Shimano Yellow. More play.

I ride lots of track so I have my Shimano pedals dialed all the way up and use the red 0° cleat. Sometimes I use toe straps too just for that extra security and stiffness.

If speed play sponsored more teams, they’d be using them. I think speed play has the best adjustability and fit . Shimano and look are so hard for me to get comfy with. I had to get 59mm spindles from speed play and that’s almost right but I’m still all the way wide on the cleat. I wish there was a really easy way to setup pedals.

Do any pros us cleat wedges? I found I needed 2 to 3 degrees of wedges to eliminate pain on the outer edge of my feet, but then started having knee problems. Coincidence?

Blue Shimano cleats every time for me as you get 2.5 degrees of float to help your knees and you are still getting that secure feeling once locked in.....perfect.

Cavendish just having a chat with a lazy half a million dollar Richard Mille watch on his wrist like its no big deal. Would'nt want to have a crash and drag that thing along the ground.

プロでも黄色クリートを使っている方が居るんだなあ。「初心者=黄色」という概念が間違っていたんだね。人それぞれ、十人十色、クリートの色は自由!って事だね。

As for me I am using yellow pedals but my knee starts to feel pain after 2-3 days of intense riding idk if its the cleats or the intensity of my ride lol

Can you ask some of the riders why some ride with "duck feet" like Alex Dowsett said, and others ride heel out like Sagan looks to? The actual cleat positions that certain riders use could be useful to understand the weird and wonderful positions that the pro's have on their bikes. Cheers.

It's a personal biomechanics thing. I used to be total duck feet. It was hard to get my heels clear of the crank and the chain stay without knee pain. The last few years, my left foot has been drifting to more neutral, but the right is still as duck foot as ever. Weird. The key is having a setup that doesn't hurt.
