In this video, we do a GDI intake cleaning on our 2020 KIA Soul EX. This is a very important maintenance step for any gas direct injected engine. This intake cleaning should be done about every 15,000 to 20,000 miles. This will clean the throttle body, intake, valves, combustion chamber, exhaust valves. These cleaners are a total upper engine cleaning if done right. For the engine to stay in clean top running health this cleaning can not be forgotten. Many car brands mostly import cars have been using GDI engines and this is not something most USA car brands do. It will save you from engine damage and wear by doing this cleaning the right way. I am using the CRC brand of cleaner because I have used their products in the past and I like their quality.
Tools needed:
1 can of GDI intake cleaner
Needle nose plyers

2016 Kia soul 35,000 miles on it. I just finished the 10 min drive I couldn’t believe the amount of smoke that was coming from my exhaust I really thought for a few minutes that I ruined everything after driving it hard w a/c running the smoke was gone this car is driving like it brand new again. It’s unbelievable how the dealership maintenance wouldn’t include something so important let alone not even never once mentioned this to me during the years I had a warranty for maintenance. Tomorrow I change the spark plugs, the pcv valve and the oil. Anyone who drives a Kia soul and never spray the inside of the engine my advice to you is run to the auto parts store and buy a can of this spray.

I have a 2016 Kia Optima ex just about to hit 70k miles, and I started experiencing oil consumption the car feels weak in power and acceleration, did the required maintenance changed oil, spark plugs and PCV valve. But Oil consumption continued. Took it to the Kia dealership and they recommended that I do a ( GDI combustion cleaning service for $500 that will take two days ) I feel like I’m just literally missing this step to hopefully solving my oil consumption problem. I will be doing this over the weekend and coming back to this video to update thank you 🙏💪🤝

I've used the CRC valve cleaner at 20,000 miles gdi 2017 Kia forte 5 (car has 43,000 miles now another cleaning to do ) following the process. The maintaining RPM, smoke from the tail pipe,soak and highway drive. Two people helped with the initial process. I noticed that what it needed (car ran the same sluggish) was a proper cleaning. I removed the intake manifold. The valves were pretty bad with carbon build up (you tube tutorial) turn the Crankshaft made sure the value was closed (you tube tutorial). Then I used CRC cleaner sprayed in/on the (closed) valves, 20 min soak, 18volt drill with zip ties(you tube tutorial) in the end of the drill. Kind of messy but the soak and zip ties 20 mins of whipping, agitation worked. I covered the engine bay with plastic and exposed the work area only. I didn't use a pic/ screw driver since I didn't want to scratch/mark up the port/valve area. I used my shop vacuum to suck up the carbon liquid/residue in the closed port/valves. Then I followed up with a walnut blast(you tube tutorial on making a gravity fed plastic soda bottle). Then some compressed air blew out the walnut fragments in the(closed) port/valve. Took about 1/2 a day to do CRC soak with drill/zip ties and walnut blast. Then reassembled the intake manifold with new port gaskets,nuts, bolt's, torque specs (you tube tutorial). Ran like a champ. I'll have to say I watched a dozen RU-vid videos from different people,places, experience and cars so, I felt confident. Glad I got past the self sabotage we all fall into. I understand the principle behind the GDI (you tube tutorial). Maintenance is a must. Thank you for the video guy's.

@@florincarsno more space needed than a driveway or garage, and if you are at 75-100k miles, this “preventative maintenance” won’t work. In all reality this GDI cleaning spray is meant to be used from the beginning when your engine is new to prevent it from ever building up you should be using it every oil change or every other oil change all the way from the first oil change ever on your engine which should be every 5,000 mi if you're running full synthetic mobile one is what I recommend or if you're running blend it should be every 3000 miles PS if you have a GDI engine which means direct injection it would be a good idea to install a catch can on top of the maintenance I stated above.

I actually had problems after doing this on the identical car (same color and everything). After I let it sit for a hour, the car barely ran. It stalled multiple times, had a check engine light, was pinging and was missing really bad. It ended up fouling out all four spark plugs and for some reason I have now developed a problem with the brake booster. The pedal is extremely hard once you turn the car off. So, from what I have found, the 2.0 is not a GDI engine. In 2016 or 2017, KIA switched over to mpi. So your engine doesn't need this service, but KIA does a fuel injector cleaning. Because they moved the fuel injector out of the cylinder, the valve build-up doesn't happen. This injector cleaning is not something that is easily done. The 1.6 is absolutely GDI and this service is very important for those engines.

I just bought a used 2013 KIA Soul Base model with 125,000 miles on it, it runs fine had it to 80mph for a mile. it's a manual 6 speed. I don't know if the GDI intake cleaning as been done on this vehicle I have the Carfax with all the maintenance that's been done on the vehicle and looks like it's been done regularly. No mention of doing GDI intake cleaning. I'll look through the maintenance schedule and see if it shows to preform this on the car. I don't think it does. What about using Seafoam?
@BadWrenchAuto
@BadWrenchAuto Год назад
Usually if I think the intake cleaning was never done with that many miles I will have a dealership that I trust do the first cleaning because they will also clean the injectors. After the first cleaning then I use the crc intake cleaner after that. If it runs out great you can try it but there is a risk that it could not break down all the contaminated valves and do damage to the engine. This is a long time on a GDI engine to not get cleaned.

Nice video. May have to try this on our 2016 Sorrento. I must say, unimpressed by the GDI design and its propensity to burn oil in normal operation. Couldn’t you just replace spark plugs after you do the cleaning to reduce variables?

I don’t think this is necessary for most GDI engines. I have 3 GDI vehicles, 2013 Accord, 2015 Impala, and 2018 Sonata. Mileage is 140k miles, 155k miles, and 40k miles respectively. Never cleaned the valves, and never had any misfire or drivability issues. No engine issues whatsoever. I think the GDI carbon buildup is a little blown out of proportion.

Dude I'm pretty sure that's the 2.0L Nu naturally aspirated MPI engine. I had two of those, I had a 2021 Soul LX manual 6 speed, and I sold that and now I have a 2023 Soul LX with the IVT (CVT) which has better acceleration. Usually a GDI engine will say "GDI" right on the engine cover especially on Kia/Hyundai engines. I think you're wasting your time, energy and money and risking messing up the engine and voiding your new car warranty. You'll know if it's the 2.0L Nu because the hoses that go into the firewall are stamped "2.0L NU."

I hear what you are saying and because prices are beyond crazy right now I agree totally with doing automotive repair yourself. The only risk I see to doing this repair if it has not been done regularly is the potential for the engine to be damaged by doing this but if not done the build up on the valves will also damage the valves. I would not be tell the the truth if I did not warn people of the risks to doing certain repairs.
