Fantastic video! One of the biggest tips is canoe bags/waterproof bags. Everything should go in these: food, clothes, food rations, sleeping bag, camera kit. The second your bag gets wet, everything inside could be spoiled. (Also a small carrier bag for any litter-from yourself or to clean up nature spoiled by others!)

Also for any U.K. viewers, I recommend the OS map over Alltrails, and would usually carry a physical map (in a waterproof pouch) and compass for emergencies.

1. Thermal base layer - shirt/pants (especially for winter) 2. Winter jacket (puff) 3. Gloves 4. Hiking pants - breathable all year round 5. Hiking boots/shoes, trail runners (something waterproof is nice) 6. Microspikes for shoes - if winter hiking; for ice 7. Headlamp 8. Trekking poles 9. Lots of water - big bottle/water filter/bottle with in-built filter 10. Dehydrated backpacking meals (add boiling water) 11. Digital maps (e.g ‘Alltrails’ app) - download offline 12. Physical map as backup 13. Satellite phone/GPS 14. First aid kit 15. Moleskin - for blisters 16. Backpacking bag (metal frame for weight distribution, hip belt) REMINDER: You don’t need a lot of this gear to get started hiking, doing small day hikes. You can progress to longer/more technical hikes as you acquire more gear along the way. Additional considerations not mentioned: - rain jacket - neck buff - hat/sunglasses/sunscreen - backpacking stove to boil water (for meals) - rain cover for backpack (if not waterproof already) - everything for camping/sleeping if doing multi-day - powerbank/solar panel powerbank to charge phone/devices - spare socks (avoid blisters by changing) - sunscreen (when sun’s out) - a sense of adventure

I would add one thing, and perhaps your sat phone does this: a Personal Locator Beacon. If you go anywhere further than two hours, you will need this if you are unable to continue. Every hiker I know in Tasmania has one, or will hire one for their trip.

A good old compass and a paper map are also very useful, especially if you know how to use them correctly! sometimes they are much better than gps... 😉

Great video! A few other things to pack: a whistle to help rescuers find you; a small compass in case you have to resort to using your paper map; a reflective emergency blanket and some heat packs in cold weather; small packets of sunscreen, insect repellent and after bite; a small folding knife; and water/wind-proof matches and striker.

A couple things I'd add is: ¹ a Knife or switchblade (hiking knife). It would fall under the "safety" portion. If you have to cut clothing to make a tourniquet or something similar. It's beyond handy (& lightweight) to just have it. ². Sodium/Minerals/Hydration replacement powders. Like LiquidIV or LMNT. Replenishing salts/minerals in the body when in heat & humidity, is absolutely necessary. It helps stop or alleviate muscle cramps. Keeps your hydrated longer, etc. ^^ it's been a massive gamechanger in my hikes/backpacking. I carry extra in my bag, just in case someone needs it.

Although I'd agree a knife is an exceptionally useful tool personally I'm not keen on folding knives, sure its better than nothing in a pinch but there's no substitute for a full tang fixed blade. And keep it sharp.

4:38 to add to the Trekking Poles usage, it helps take some of the pack weight "away" from your back/hips/legs bc now you're using your arms to move. Essentially you now have "4 legs". This is why it allows you to "move faster" &/or "go further comfortably". It also allows better traction (with or without microspikes). Particularly useful when carrying expensive gear & you don't want to slip/fall. It saves your knees, particularly on DOWNHILLS. Bc again, you utilize your arms. This is where I see people use the trekking poles "wrong", imo. You need to extend the poles longer than hip or waist height. When you do this, you get a longer reach when going down a decline, so you don't have to awkwardly squat or bend forward where you move your center of gravity (with the heavy pack). You can step down with support.

Awesome and informative video Aidin! I literally just got back from hiking today and I definitely could have used some ice spikes for the hike... The trail got rocky and black ice was everywhere. Probably gonna have to pick some up soon. And you are spot on with the trekking poles. They make a world of difference! Let me know if you ever make your way up into Virginia, I know of tons of great hikes up here.

I really enjoy the Katadyn filters for water, they are so tiny but you can fill up to a liter when needed. I’m no longer embarrassed about chopping my finger from my drone now first aid kit’s definitely help! It might be interesting to try to put together a sub $200 backpacking kit I bet it’s possible 🤔

Cost can be such a barrier for folks. Thankfully, a lot of things you may not use often, or might try while figuring out if hiking/backpacking is your thing, can be rented or purchased used, which can save a ton of money, especially at first.

Great info! You should also check out GAIA GPS. I like Alltrails for their community features but I like using Gaia for finding those trails and roads that no one really knows exist or don't show up on any other map. Out here in the South West it really come in clutch for exploring and finding hidden gems.

I always make sure I have a hard shell outer waterproof layer with a 7,000-10,000mm hydrostatic head, as puffas aren’t as waterproof.

Hello Aiden, such a nice video as always !! Could you please help me. I need an audio system (mic + recorder etc), for run n gun documentary style travel filmmaking. I have been very confused. Could you please suggest me what's the best budget/semi professional system I should go for ? I need a reliable field recorder and mic with good quality with good connections (XLR). As, with my experience I found that this 3.5 mm TRS is not reliable. Happy new your to you and wishes for future endeavors !! I shall be very very grateful to you 😊

Thick socks are really important, too. They reduce the impact on your feet. I always bring Gore tex rain wear and down jacket. Rain jacket is for hiking in cold and windy condition, and down jacket is for a rest.

here is all the gear i use daily- buy it from my affialiate links below - continues to list enough gear for a platoon of special forces - all about that affiliate link moneh ...jokes its weird cos when you did a tutorial for timelapses with your panasonic, yuou walked up the mountain with just the camera, and that was a night lapse aswell - but for a day trip to mountains you need all this stuff lol weird man, weird but funny

For a multi-day or long winter send I might, but it depends on the hike. 3. Timelapse video was a couple of years back. The passion has moved from the reason they started their channels and its all now about that money. Its not just you. “A platoon of special forces”…? Aidan’s prioritising safety and preparedness, and being proactive rather than reactive. Any good hiker (or soldier) would understand this, so they’re not caught out in unpredictable conditions and you’re not having to be carried by your unit. It’s all about self-sustainability. If you’re so jaded by RU-vid and the people who work hard to create content for you to watch, perhaps don’t watch their videos or comment and bring them down…

I'd much rather have great content creators like Aidin getting paid than TikTokers who produce the most low quality, lazy content. It's also incredibly easy to ignore paid ad reads and/or skip over them within videos. I'm all for creators getting paid, I'll never buy the product or software they mention but it's great to see them getting money for their efforts.
