Here's a little A/B on my Dano jazzmaster between a Mastery vibrato and a Descendant vibrato. Let me first state that I have no affiliation with Swope Guitar Shop. I bought this vibrato from their web store at full price literally between songs on a session last week after playing a guitar that had one on it. It arrived today, and I installed it. In this video, I play the guitar for a bit with the Mastery and then with the Descendant, unplugged, and give my initial, completely unrehearsed impressions.
==============================
Welcome to my channel! My name is Justin, and I'm a full time session guitarist in Nashville, Tennessee. I've always wanted to start a RU-vid channel to do two things:
1) to give a bit of a behind the scenes look at the session world.
2) to share how I come up with parts, what I'm listening for, how I lock in with a band, how I dial up tones and choose what effects to use, etc.
There are a MILLION "how to solo your brains out" channels on RU-vid, and many of them are incredible, but where are all the channels that just help you to better play actual songs with other people? How do you support a singer? How do you become not just a better guitar player, but a better MUSICIAN?
If you're interested in any of that, you're in the right place!! Feel free to subscribe to my channel here AND follow me on IG at / justinostrander . Thanks for stopping by!

Thank you for this video. I bought my first Jazzmaster and this same thing was driving me crazy and I though it was fretting out. Going to order a Descendant now!

Thanks for doing this, I just ordered a Descendant today for this exact reason. I love the Mastery and the vibrato is so smooth, but I want more sustain, especially on the B and high E strings.

That arm rocking in the collet is a deal breaker for me especially when youre paying thqt price. Thanks for the review mate

Wouldn’t of been a problem if there was a proper shim
@watkinscopicat

the stewmac neck shims are a great solution for this.

Great video! How does the guitar play now? Did it change the “stiffness” or feeling of the strings during bends?
@JustinOstrander
@JustinOstrander 3 года назад
It plays great. I don’t really think it changed the stiffness of the strings. I was going to do a follow up video on it after using it for a week or so

Ok, I found this. In regards to my comment on the follow up.... Now I see that you had the Mastery vibrato on there.

Yeah the mastery is cool. This bridge fixed all my sustain and noise issues without changing the guitars geometry at all. Well worth it for me.

Have had similar problems but a good shim corrects a lot of the issues.

do you find you lost a lot of overtones? I've never had that really buzzy overtone experience you are talking about, sounds more like it needed a better set up, but I see what you mean about the bell like overtones, which I personally love! I'm thinking of changing out my AVRI trem for either a Descendant or mastery vibrato but am worried with the Descendant, it will kill a lot of those bell like overtones!
@JustinOstrander
@JustinOstrander 2 года назад
You can hear lots of overtones in this video as I play the guitar unplugged after swapping in the Descendant tailpiece. And the setup is perfect for me. You’re right-I could jack the action up and/or shim the neck, and it would get rid of some of the lost energy across the bridge. Because shimming and raising the action does the same thing as the Descendant does-it creates more of a break angle on the bridge. But shimming/raising the action would also totally change the way the guitar plays. That’s what I love about the Descendant-it gives me more break angle so the guitar rings like a bell PLUS it doesn’t buzz any more, and I keep my nice low action that I love.

@@JustinOstrander ya sweet low action is what I want always. it makes playing way easier and faster and makes my skills flurish.

Straight up my friend, that rattle in the front half of the video is the bridge not being properly installed and tightened down, not an issue with the vibrato. It’s rattling mechanical noise from the bridge.
@JustinOstrander
@JustinOstrander Год назад
I’m sorry, but I disagree. There was almost no break angle over the saddles. The strings weren’t properly seated and lots of vibration was lost to the section of string behind the bridge. I could get it to stop by muting that section of the strings. Also, that Mastery bridge was in so tight I almost couldn’t get it out to install the companion Descendant bridge that I just put in. Zero parts of the old bridge rattled at all. I’m going to do another video on the new bridge. It’s awesome. And thanks for watching!
@BlackBobbin
@BlackBobbin Год назад
@@JustinOstrander that’s fine, but the sound in this video is not from string vibration behind the bridge.
@JustinOstrander
@JustinOstrander Год назад
@@BlackBobbin Again, the bridge itself did not rattle at all. Nothing in the bridge is loose. Except the strings in their saddles because of a complete lack of break angle over the bridge. The strings were dancing all over the place in the saddles. The G string was the worst offender. The extra loud noise beginning around 1:28 is the G string buzzing against the saddle. This is solved with the descendant because of the downward pressure on the *exact same saddles* (I never changed the bridge) from the increased break angle. Hope that makes sense.
@BlackBobbin
@BlackBobbin Год назад
@@JustinOstrander when you play the chord on the lower register, and there is rattling, that can be caused by a) the top mount screw on the bridge post now being tightened all the way b) the saddle height adjustment screw on the g saddle not making contact with the bridge plate or c) the overall height adjustment screw not making contact with the bottom of the thimble. I’ve heard this sound hundreds of times and it can be addressed with the standard Fender vibrato as well as the OMV. The increased break angle may have addressed the issue, but to say the Mastery vibrato is what is allowing that rattle is a false attribution.
@JustinOstrander
@JustinOstrander Год назад
@@BlackBobbin Two things. 1) once again, every single part of the mastery bridge is ultra tight in this entire video. 2) I did not change the mastery bridge or tighten anything on it when I swapped tailpieces. It is the same bridge in the exact same condition in the before and after of this video. The only change at all is the tailpiece and the strings. The string noise behind the bridge is reduced with the new tailpiece and the strings no longer dance around in the saddles because of the increased angle. That's it. There are no mechanical vibrations due to loose parts in the bridge itself.

First of all, that Guitar looks Stunning! When you held it up sideways at around 3:45 I can plainly see that the neck pocket is really shallow compared to an official Fender JM body. I.e. The guitar neck is raised higher than the surface of the top of the guitar to a greater degree than an official Fender guitar. I also know this to be true of my GuitarMill JM body compared to my American Pro JM body. Fender, I believe also tends to make angled neck pockets, my guitar mill body doesn't have one and I would guess that beautiful Dano body also doesn't. You could, as you said, put a shim in the pocket but it would likey make that 21st fret poke way up in the air and then you really have to jack up the bridge and it doesn't feel quite right. Ive tried this with the guitar mill body ( I also have the full Mastery kit on it). I've tried a buzzstop which fixed the problem of break angle but always seemed to make the guitar go out of tune quickly (even without touching the vibrato bar). After this video, I may have to go for a Descendant Vibrato also.

He probably realized, but the tips on both Mastery and Descendant vibrato arms are threaded so you just screw them off! I think they may even be matching threads so the tips are interchangeable!

swear you shouldn't be having that many buzzing issues with that mastery bridge, I had a bit with mine so I sold it and got a staytrem...much better

It looks like your bridge height is set too low and you do not have enough pitch back in your neck pocket. You need more downward force on that bridge and adjusting both of those variables would help eliminate the rattle.
@JustinOstrander
@JustinOstrander 3 месяца назад
That downward force on the saddles is exactly what the new tailpiece fixed. And I didn’t have to change the geometry of the guitar (neck angle, pickup height, etc) at all. It has good low-medium action. Comfy to play yet still good for slide playing. Cheers!

This guitar simply hasn't been setup in the proper manner. Doesn't matter if you think Fender's shouldn't have shims. That's a wacky bias. Every 60's offset model came with them from the factory. Dano should ship with them. Leo designed them to be like archtops. That is factual. They're not tele's or Strats. Maybe just watch a video from our friend @puisheen and have a great expensive guitar be even better. No one will know of care if you have a tiny piece of wood in the pocket. Why are people weird about stuff like this??
@JustinOstrander
@JustinOstrander Год назад
This guitar was setup perfectly for me-low action and 10s with a plain G. I dropped a fantastic unit into it that solved every single one of my issues without needing to touch the setup or action. I’m not a Leo purist, obviously. I’m also not using heavier Fender Mastersound flats with a wound G like old JMs came with.
@christineblack4654

because a neck should be straight with your guitar. not the contrary. If the neck is straight, Justin did a great fix here. why are people fighting the fact? lol omg.
