After spending a little more time with the Fuji, I realize the funky articulating screen is for vertical orientation shots, an alternative to the flip out. I think it's pretty nifty. See all this gear photorec.tv/kits

Vertical shots is how I occasionally use the X-T2 LCD monitor as well as close to the ground shots.

Like many people who are using a crop camera, I would love to see a full review of the Canon 6D mark ii. Is it a huge step up from say 70D or 80D. Camera comparison with these crop cameras would be very helpful to the people are actually the target of the 6Dii
@PeterBrockie
@PeterBrockie 7 лет назад
The problem with the 6D mkii isn't that it can't take a good picture. People who stick up for it are already Canon users - they know they have glass for it and want an upgrade. Where it falls flat is when you compare it against other cameras. Canon competes against Nikon and no one else - they are blinded to what the other companies are doing well and refused to add anything Nikon hasn't done (in-body IS, pro-level APS-C lenses, 4k with a usable CODEC, and so on) and sadly, they might go the way of Kodak in the next 5-10 years where they just fade out after having a massive market share and not changing with the times. I loved Canon for years and invested in glass, but I jumped ship because they simply didn't make cameras which were all that compelling to me anymore. Canon routinely cripples features on their cameras for seemingly no reason other than to sell higher end models. They leave out basic stuff for a modern camera of that price - like 4k. It just isn't a good value in 2017 for someone choosing a camera, nor is it a particularly good backup for pros since they removed the second memory card slot for some completely insane reason.
@photorectoby

Peter Brockie +Peter Brockie it's silly to say it can't take good pictures. I agree with everything else you say and as I said in the video, will likely not be recommending it like I did the 6D. One correction, the original 6D never had dual card slots.
@ian00007
@ian00007 7 лет назад
Peter Brockie Fully agree. Its the value for money that's in question here. Like buying an all-new car but the engine performs worse than that of its predecessor. Not worth it even with all the bells and whistles. Edit: I had the $2k saved up to get the 6DII but Canon won't be getting my money. Now looking for a really good deal on a 2nd hand A7RII.

My mistake. I was thinking of the Nikon version at the time (D600 or whatever?), either way, it still should be included on anything in that price range (I'm looking at YOU Sony). :D

Travel wise - my main kit is a Sony A7 with the 24-240. You should try it - it's a great combo for a 1 lens kit. I also often take a Zeiss 35mm F2.8. I also have a couple of APS-C Sonys (6500 and 5100) for if I want to go super light. When my wife and I travel together she takes the a6500 with 16-50 kit and a 50mm macro (full frame). This setup gives us lots of options due to the interchangeability.options. 35mm becomes a 50mm, the macro allows both nature shots as well as portraits, and the 24-240 can get you to 360 on the crop sensor if we need to be more tele (e.g. if we see a bear in the wild). Thoughts/questions about this type of setup?

Wow Toby, the timing of your video is just amazing! The other week I went on a short trip and packed my Nikon D750 along with 3 lenses (16-35 f/4, 24-70 f/2.8, and 70-200 f/2.8) and just found it to be way too much weight. I had no fun shooting and didn't even bother changing lenses; though I carried the whole 15 lbs worth of kit with me every day. I have decided to make the switch to a Fuji X-T2 and have been doing a ton of research since getting back. I'd be super interested to hear more about the kit 18-55mm f/2.8-4 from Fuji, as I think that would have to become the main lens for me - the 16-55 f/2.8 looks like it would be too much to carry around (size and weight) and I'd probably have the same issue I have with my D750 and Tamron 24-70 right now. I really love the quality of images I can get with my current collection, but I feel I am missing out on capturing 'the moments' due to a lack of motivation to even get the gear out of my bag. Sorry for the long winded comment...I don't usually write them at all, but again the timing of this video is just so exciting to me! Would love to hear more of your thoughts on the X-T2 and recommended lenses for travel. Meanwhile I shall have to see about selling all my current Nikon gear...

For me after buying the Canon 50mm stm lens, I find it the best, very best choice as on the go lens! Very small and light weight, that baby size lens is just a must have. Too bad these are kind of expensive

My traveling kit is the Canon 6D with 40mm STM and a compact 16mm. Oh and by the way, I hate the 6D mark II. I was really expecting dual card slot, especially since it costs 2000$. Great video though!

Solid kit. So what will you do when you want to upgrade from the 6D? Change systems or consider the 5D line?
@Georgeinthejungle
@Georgeinthejungle 7 лет назад
PhotoRec TV Good question. I would love to see you discuss this. The 5D may be more than users want / need in CanonLand, the 6D mkII is not exactly thrilling, so what is left? Waiting for the "amazing" FF mirrorless a year from now? Or what?

Thank you for this wonderful reviews! As for the X-T2, I really love its flip screen over the ones that come out fully articulated. For street photography, I find the flip screen more inconspicuous to use without drawing too much attention to you. I guess it's a matter of preference.

I've been trying downsize now that I'm doing more personal travel, so its interesting to come across this vid. I went from 5D MKII and a lens assortment (heavy backpack with a tripod to support). Then added 70D to use for travel, nice and light with associated EF-S lenses, but wanted to go lighter still. My dad recently picked up an Olympus EM5 MKII and I started thinking mirrorless is the way to go. Ended up after trying a bunch of bodies and reading up with the Fujifilm X-T2 kit lens and a 10-24mm F/4. Had it about a week now, but haven't had time to get acquainted with it. I also have the Mavic. Now the hard part is finding a bag! Be nice to see some bag reviews for travel kits. I'll check out the website you noted, see if you recommend that as part of the kits. Good vids by the way.

You already touched on my response to the Fuji articulating screen. I like it much less than the T6i I came from. I also got to play with a Panasonic G85. Loved that screen as well. But, you won't hear me complain about the Fuji screen vs Sony... The tilting is nice for down low and up high shots, but you can't do portrait orientation down low or over head with any confidence in my experience. Granted, pros have gotten by for years with cameras like the 5d's and Nikon d800's.. so obviously it's not a deal breaker. Just like your point about the 6d. It shouldn't keep you from getting good photos, but it's definitely an aid in those peculiar shooting situations. If Fuji magically produced an X-T3 with a fully articulating screen, a 1000 shot plus battery and IBIS, in my opinion, it would be the perfect camera. My only significant gripes about Fuji is the battery life. The battery life, or lack there of has left me high and dry more than once. So much so I considered picking up an 80d.. and maybe you'll experience my only other gripe.. when shooting timelapses with the kit lens, I've had the timing get out of sync with the shutter speed. Resulting in a permutation of shutter durations. The other is, while shooting jpeg time lapse, I've noticed that one or two frames out of a few hundred didn't get the "lens profile correction" backed into the photo for one reason or another. And Lightroom is little help since there are no profiles to choose from in the built in list. Both have happened more than once. Otherwise I love it. And that'd be the piece of gear I'd like to see you review as your opinions have previous videos shaped my photographic ability! Cheers!

Fun stuff. I've been enjoying the Tokina 11-20 f2.8 for night shots and trying wide angle stuff. A small-ish kit with APS-C is what I imagine wanting. A Tamron or Sigma 17-50 f2.8 seem like a good options to keep it small. The 50mm+ range is difficult. With crop only lenses, it's a tidy size f4-5.6 or the large sigma f1.8 with nothing between. Any time I look at chasing absolute max sharpness, the lenses head for full frame size and price.

Hi Toby, I was going to tell you about the XT2 articulating screen, but it seems you have realised the real function!, as it happens there is a combination with the new firmware to use the camera in Portrait mode with an alternative focusing mode pre-programmed, thus avoiding the delay otherwise encountered, simply rotating the camera!, this with the tilt-screen adds to the camera's already superb usability. I mostly use it for landscape, wildlife and flowers/insects etc. but every time I want to do a portrait or architectural shot it seems entirely ready and willing!. I have to agree with your observation that this, like many other similarly priced modern cameras is more that adequate for a wide variety of photographic activities, for me the only real limitation is my skill and concentration, it is very hard to get the best results consistently and predictably in the wide range of illumination and conditions of the real world, the camera is much more sensitive than I am!. Keep up the good work, Richard.

Not a Fuji owner, but while using the 70D I put the tilty-flippy screen in that same position for taking "portrait" shots. I was photographing animals, and they seemed to respond much better to me just having the camera elsewhere than my face (and they were on the ground, as well).

I love my A7Rii for travel. I would be happy with the 24-70 f/4 the 70-200 f/4 and a prime like the 55mm f/1.8 or 85. I am not so sure about that 24-240, it seems pretty heavy, certainly convenient range though.

I am looking to get a new camera next year. I currently have a Canon 6D and a Fuji XT10. So I'm curious to see how you think the Fuji XT2 stacks up to the Canon 5D IV. I've already written the 6D II off as being a potential buy. I don't see it being enough of an upgrade to the original 6D to be worthwhile. I am still deciding to stay with Canon or commit more to my Fuji gear. I only have a couple fuji lenses right now, but have a substantial amount of Canon gear. So I think seeing how you feel they XT2 and 5D compare with specific emphasis on landscapes, portraits, and sports.

XT-2 Screen flip. It's there for us portrait photographers. Ideal for low angle fashion shots in portrait orientation without lying on the floor to compose. Without the additional flip it would be useless for us. But personally I prefer a fully articulated LCD like on an Olympus OMD E-M1 mk2

16/1.4 is maybe the best XF lens out there .Also, for landscape XF 10-24 should be considered as one of the best wide angle zooms in the aps-c market ,if not the best.Generally ,Fuji shines on lenses, especially in primes .I disagree about the buttons (customizeable) and the menu,there's no way back to other camera,the simpliest and quickest menu ever.Last ,but not least ,i agree about the LCD screen ,it was created having in mind photographers and not vloggers.

I currently have some Canon gear, but am really interested in the Fuji system. I don't hear anyone say much about the X-T20. Is that because it's so much similar to the X-T2? It's a lot cheaper, has a touch screen, and has the same sensor. Thoughts?
@Askorbian
@Askorbian 7 лет назад
Caleb Daugherty depends on what you are shooting. The xt20 is great for most people but if you need full pro features take the xt2
@lynne1312
@lynne1312 7 лет назад
I have the X-T20 It's a great small camera with a lot for your buck. I choose it over X-T2 cause i'm a canon user also. I wanted the touch screen. I wasn't sure if I would like a x-t2 without touch screen. I also like the hands on dials. Found them easy to adjust to using, Plus Sharp fast lens. I really have nothing bad to say about it.
@RyanH0809
@RyanH0809 7 лет назад
Caleb Daugherty it's a complicated trade off really. The X-T20 has most of the goodness of the X-T2. And in my opinion, for the general photographer, it's a better video camera. For a serious videographer or pro photographer, less so. X-T20 is kind of Canon 70dish with a significantly better sensor, 4k and mirrorless benefits. XT2 is more like what the 6D mkii should have been, albeit crop sensor and mirrorless.
@lynne1312
@lynne1312 7 лет назад
Yes I agree a complicated trade off. I am not into video only stills. Yes kind of 70dish, but when i look at the Fuji brand they seem old school. I thought that was the Fujifilm brand. I am by no means giving up my canon gear yet. Don't jump over to Fuji if you have any doubt. I would rent it first. The rumor is next year the next version of the xt2 is coming. So it will be interesting.

I have both the X-T2 and XT20. Compare the specs .... The XT20 does 92% of what the X-T2 can do. If u don't 'need' the extra's then save yourself a load of cash and buy some more glass. BTW ... The XT20 viewfinder is "Very Good' ... but .... the one on the X-T2 is AMAZING ... But is it worth $1200 ! ! ! ? ? ? Only U can decide ! ! !

Hi Toby, thanks for the video. I'm a stock shooter and i'm curious about the new Tamron 18-400 for travel and general wildlife to use for stock. A few reviews have been made but they don't go very indepth regarding sharpness. As a stock shooter I need a minimum requirement when zoomed in at 100%. If I could get that in a 20X super zoom, it would make life easier and quite fun! Any plans to review it? All the best, Andrew

I want to know how the 6D2 does in astrophotography? Are you bringing a tracker? Other Astro concerns are the Sigma 14 f1.8 & the Irix 15 f2.4.....how are they in the corners?
@photorectoby
@photorectoby 7 лет назад
I did not bring a tracker - just shot the stars at 15-20 seconds. It does alright. I am very used to shooting under exposed with my sony and bringing up the shadows without serious noise. I can't do that with the 6DM2 - it gets noisy fast. More even exposures are better but it's not amazing. The sigma 14 is fantastic -some slight smearing in the corners and a little coma but overall a fantastic lens. The irix seems like a good value too and allows for filters with special gear. I am not done inspecting all the images - more soon in my full reviews

F/2.8 still lets in 2.8 worth of light regardless of sensor size, only DOF changes.... aperture is lens length divided by width and that doesn't change because of sensor size. research telescopes and you can learn a lot of useful info.

Cassio Mansini it's good. Sharp, but not super sharp. Very good in the centre, but a fair amount of distortion in the corners and edges. Barrel distortion quite prominent. Build quality is great and it feels very nice to use. A very good overall buy. Be aware, though, that 14mm is very, very wide. I prefer something more telephoto, even for landscapes, as 14mm seems to push the background very far away.

I'm sorry to sound rude but I sincerely think that you don't know much about Fujifilm X-series cameras and lenses. Try to use X-T2 more often and put some prime lenses on it. I'm pretty sure you would have a completely different experience. Also update X-T2 to its latest firmware and you should be able to map some dials and function buttons that work exactly the same way as your DSLRs and you can operate the camera without moving your eye off the EVF.
